Sony PlayStation 3 prices may see a drop in the near future as Sony has revealed that hardware adjustments are being worked out to save on company costs and allow the effects to trickle down on consumers.

ps3 - Image 1 The move, Sony says, is part of their cost-cutting strategy which is parallel to their experience with the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 game consoles. The policy, they say, should lower down the manufacturing costs just enough to see more affordable PS3's in the retail market.

Incidentally, the European version of the PS3 is due out next month and was announced to carry a different set of hardware specifications but no word was given as to how the new developments will affect pricing.

The PS3 Euro was also revealed to have backwards compatibility issues but Sony addressed the matter saying, "We will continue to offer firmware upgrades to increase the number of titles that are compatible, but rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3."

» uhhh a bit confused

Is the new hardware specs merely that they took out the old PS2 hardware for backwards compatibility and replaced it with emulation like they said they were going to?

After reading the article on 1up that is all it really appears to be, just removal of the EE+GS chip.

Im just curious does this mean that the "new ps3" hardware wont play as the original ps3 specifications...like will graphics on this ps3 be dumbed down due to price?...

by Kutibah - 2007-02-24 04:27
» no

the PS3 will be no different performance wise. Sony is just taking different steps to cut costs like emulating PS1/PS2 software instead of having a chip and other things like that

by are you stupid - 2007-02-24 04:30
» uh

no, they are removing the emotion engine and ps1 hardware and replacing those with software emulation which will be equally as good. PS3 graphixs will not be lowered.. duuuuur what kinda of idiot are you?

by Sephiroth - 2007-02-24 05:17
» about the price

Although there has not been even a rumour about how much will be lowered the price, I'll be more than happy if they just lower it to $499 for the 60 GB version in USA

by wow - 2007-02-24 05:40
» wow...

so they'll be just like the 360....*****

360 fanboys can't say anything about the PS3's backwards compatibility.

Sony said they wre going to do this anyway, I dont understand everybodys problem with it. I think all the people saying ''OMG NO THEY ARE RUINING THE CONSOLE!'' don't understand what Sony are doing, I think the people just think because Sony is removing one componant it makes the PS3 worse. Well to just clarify with them it doesnt! Sony are just making cuts but replacing them with cheaper but still as efficient componant. Like the 90mn chip is being replaced for a 65mn chip, and Blu-Ray players will be replaced in the next year, jsut like microsoft have replaced their toshiba DVD drive in the 360 about 4 times. Sony are replacing things to minizine the size of the console and to cut the price for the consumer, Sony are doing this for us the customers, to help ease the price.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-24 11:51
» yes I can

PS3 will have very little backwards compatibility anymore after removing that chip. sony isn't going to care about getting many PS2 games working, because many won't be sold for much longer. They will likely give up after a few updates. They even implied that in their statement.

» you're right !

Amen !

by mohaas05 - 2007-02-24 12:46
» nuh-uh

they're simply removing the emulation chip and bringing ps1 and ps2 to software emulation. that does not necessarily mean most ps2 games wont work

by skyler - 2007-02-24 14:43
» the Euro

ps3 has more stuff in it, but minus the back compat chips, research nubs

by dude - 2007-02-24 15:04
