Sony looking into PS3 hack rumors |

It's not every day that you hear about the PS3 getting hacked, especially when the guy behind it is a pretty well-known iPhone hacker. Smelling the potential threat to the threshold, Sony has sent out word that they're on the case and investigating the truth behind the PS3 hack rumors.
"We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information," said a statement from a Sony rep.
Though the hack is said to be unpatchable, the hacker, Geohot, himself said that firmware updates could complicate the implementation. As it is, we'll just have to wait for updates from both ends of the battleground.

It's a fair trade when you buy it for the technology inside.
Quality of the games are good and well designed.
Who ever regreted paying for uncharted or ff13?
Shit like Xbox and iphone deserve to be hacked.
Geohot is a asshole.

1. slim owners can't even install Linux anymore
2. you can get the full power out of the system Like sony said we would on OtherOS
3.sony says the PS3 can do everything..OK what happen to Ps1 and PS2 ? Where's Old games like NES,SNES,SEGA, etc etc
I mean Who the hell in the right mind pays 10$ for a NES game LOL i don't even pay that much for the REAL game. it's cheaper to go down to the Old game store on 31st street and get NES games for 2$
Sorry kind of got off topic there =)

You know that the ''it only does everything'' suppose to attract customer, right?
A software won't allow you to install another OS in the PS3 Slim.

Linux is very restricted (no RSX, 256mb native RAM, etc.) and a pain to use since I have to dig out a keyboard and mouse. I prefer native PS3 homebrew.

it already does ps1 games, you don't see people bitching about that. They removed the EE (emotion Engine) i think it was from the ps3 so that is why you cannot play the ps2 games.

The euro ps3 never had the Emotion engine just a ps2 emulator.....

I could ALWAYS be wrong, but it doesn't seem like he's doing that.
Hacking can be done in days, it's different for every person.
It's like exploring a labyrinth, there may be multiple ways to get through and some are faster than others.
People think differently.

It it isnt, it will require physical modification of the hardware since he claims it cannot be patched, which lets you know its something physical, not software that he changed. And even with hardware modding, sony could update the firmware to check for the mod, and brick any that have it, which they wont do, but should.
I honestly could care less about iso's and roms, I just cant stand the game hacks cheaters use in online play.
Reply
They'll probably try bribe him off. Cause a hole like this would destory the solid claim of the PS3 being the most secure console.
P.S. I didn't say un-hackable cause nothing is

1. online cheaters
2. piracy
3. frequent "patch" updates from Sony
4. 3rd party developers will abandon PS3
5. Sony might ban honest people accidentally
If you want to play "emulators", just use a pc or buy an old xbox for 50 bucks... don't kick the PS3 while it's down. Think about what piracy did to the Dreamcast. Think about why the original xbox had barely a 4 year life-span. Think about how much it has hurt the PSP. For those of you who genuinely love "homebrew", I'm not worried about you, but MOST people just want their PS3 hacked for darker reasons.

2. Happens w/ everything else...so who cares
3. Updates are never a bad thing
4. No they won't, 360 has been hacked since pretty much day one and they have no issues
5. It is not known if they even have a ban system in place, it is likely they don't but even if they do I am 100% sure like the Xbox it is a fool proff system that can't ban people accidently.

the ps3=no hack, thats why theres less sales
back the phuck away sony!!!!!!

By hacking it, that's the most respect you can give it!
Also, Sony knowing isn't bad, if Geohot knew it would be bad for them to know he wouldn't of released the information.

Most of you may not agree but potential change to online gaming (what the machine still has to achieve in a way microsoft does) will greatly suffer by the exploit of this hacker. I love my PS3 and my Xbox 360. Both allow me to play the games I like. One game I'll buy on Xbox the next one I'll get on PS3. Even I have used some homebrew on my PSP but that was mostly for the emulators for the snes. In the end thats all that people want, but there are more people out there that will truly enjoy screwing other people by pirating every available game, cheating online maybe even be a threat to other online players.
If he really found this hack, I hope he will just use it for himself and have fun with it. Likewise, anyone trying to cheat with exploits like this I hope their account and hardware gets banned from sony's network.

If they had been more interested in testing firmware across all platform revisions before releasing 3.01-3.15 and hadn't forced me to pay an additional 178 dollars to fix my drive which died right after said update, I might be less interested in this hack.

Why is Xbox 360 is so popular in Asia than PS3, especially in the Philippines? Because it is modded. You can play your copied games in it.
It may hurt the game developers. But, only 3% of Filipino gamers who have the ability to buy expensive original games.

Edit, nvmd it's false.

And guess what? Even though every system, not to forget your pc, has ways to play pirated games, gaming-industry is flourishing.
Also, a lot of good games were released for all of them.
The market is growing, and that growing will definitely reach its end in the future (see movie industry for example, is QQing because not everyone of us buys 7 DVDs a week), but until thats happening there is still a long way to go.
Also, just think about "security through obscurity" from a developers view.
Sony made a mistake, obviously the implemented security wasn't high enough. Now they've got the chance to make up for it. Seems pretty fair to me, not everyone gets a second (or a third) chance.
What I want to say, no one is perfect. The world is turning, perhaps the next console will not be hackable. But Sony will not go bankrupt, PS6 inc. Gaming industry will not go bankrupt. Fifa 2048 inc.
Oh well, just my 2 cents...

what this TOOL has done is open the door for game piracy & in game hacking Etc ,
& game piracy hurts US as much if not more than game companies ,
game companies are usin 100 million $ budgets these days to give us quality games , do you imagine they will continue to do so if a 3rd of their profit ( that they worked hard for goes to lazy ass kids who simply insert a disc & hit copy .
WE will suffer because of this ego driven virgin spoon fed moron Geohot
aka George Hotz ,
put it this way , if i lived in jersey id find his address & curb stomp his head , his name & picture come up with a quick google , & i dont think i'll be the only PS3 owner that will want to put a beat down on this egotistical little pr##k .
