Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1Rumors about a new 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU have been flying fast recently, generating a lot of excitement, speculation and - of course - doubt among gamers.

Sony has also moved quickly to clamp down on the rumor and it seems the doubters may have gotten things right. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has said that the SKU is nothing but "rumor and speculation".

The alleged SKU was supposed to be available for GBP 299 (US$ 604). It's a lot cheaper than the GBP 425 (US$ 857) 60GB PS3 that comes with an extra controller and two first-party titles, but the rumored SKU was supposed to be a more "stripped down" version without USB ports and zero backwards compatibility. Stay tuned for further developments.

» what i dont understand...

is how this supposed "striped down" PS3 would not have backwards compatibility. Considering the fact that it is entirely software emulated now and requires no extra hardware. So this system would have to have an incomplete firmware to not have PS 1/2 emulation. Seems like more work. That fact alone kinda debunks the myth, considering the person who started the myth had no idea what they were talking about in the first place. Or i could be missing something major that is required for backwards compatibility.

» Never mind the B/C

How are consumers supposed to charge their controllers without a USB port? What a stupid statement (No USB ports)

Anyway let me see if there was any other PS3 that didn't have memory card slots??? Maybe they've just upped the 20Gig drive to a 40, now that would make sense.
