Despite the Xbox 360's one-year head start, analysts are already predicting that Sony's PS3 will soon surpass the Microsoft home video game console in terms of worldwide sales. It's a big thing if you're an active participant in the fanboy console wars, but apparently Sony isn't thinking too much about it.
Speaking to Industry Gamers, PlayStation software senior brand manager Scott McCarthy said that instead of the unit numbers, their focus is set squarely on the PS3's profitability.
"So do we pass Xbox 360? At the moment, I think we're trying to just keep up with inventory and trying to move as many units as we can through the channel," he said.
"It's also one of those things where, do we notice what Microsoft is doing? Obviously, they are our competition. But is it like we surpass Microsoft or we fail? No. Our goal is to be profitable and we're going to achieve that this year and do even better next year."
Sony has time and again said that its consoles would have at least a ten-year lifespan. The PS3, in particualr, has been branded by the company as future-proof.
McCarthy likened Sony's plan to Nintendo's focus on making their platforms as profitable as possible. He added that Sony will aggressively campaign to increase the PS3's profitability this year. If the console happens to close the gap between it and the Xbox 360 then that's just icing on the cake.

If you look within the link, it clearly states that OtherOS needs to be installed. As far as I know, I'm sure you would be mad too if someone used your OWN product against you for their own benefit. Whether Geohot's intentions were to support piracy or not is not something I know, but it sure as hell opens the doors for it. This post is basically a heads up for the people that want to know what exactly started this "war".

Second, I never pirated a game on my ps3 and I am sure that most people that enjoyed Linux on theirs didn't pirate any either.
Third, Sony does not care whether you are jailbreaking your ps3 to run homebrew (which is perfectly legal) or to pirate games (which is obviously illegal as it should be).
And last but not least, I hope that Geohot wins his case because I would like to think that I actually own something if I spend my hard earned money on it. Afterall, I can install any piece of software on my PC because I own it instead of having to get software that is only distributed by microsoft and have to constantly agree to the ever changing crap of a user agreement that Sony forces down your throat.

If those features were advertised and removed, that IS false advertisement.
If you don't update, you can't play newer games at all. If you do update, you can't use the Other OS anymore.
When you buy your PS3, you don't sit there and check which features you want it for. Hell, even if you did, There is no way they could say you couldn't do 'this' just because you checked 'that'.

Fact is that what sony did was really messed up but completely legal.
There End User License Agreement says and has always said they can remove whatever features they want. Although theres a small chance that what they did could end up being considered illegal odds are against that happening.

Hardware prices always fall and the PS3 had a good start even @ its high entry price. There will always be those out there trying to hack the latest thing, anything ever released into the public is eventually cracked.
Profits for Sony are more about liscensing than hardware sold. Hardware just increases sales potential. 10 yr lifespans w/ great initial hardware practically guarantee profit over the lifecycle with even a modest user base.

Sony... and profit? It doesn't make sense...
It's not like they stab customers in the back, talk them into selling their old hardware to buy the new hardware, then make them re-buy the old hardware just to play software that they were supposed to be able to...
It's not like they were to implement software-based backward compatibility, then remove it upon software updates...
It's not like they removed a feature that nerds used... One that takes a little bit of intelligence... One that if someone knew how to use that feature it's likely they know any sort of hacking themselves.
It's not like they promised so much out of the smallest PSP yet released, claimed you'd be able to rip and convert over your old UMD's to play on it's 16GB of internal memory... It's not like they made you download all of it's content, then limited the content post-release... And it's definitely not like they snoop around your system looking at whatever they want to.
No Sony is a great little company.

Nowhere in commercials for the system,nowhere on the physical box did it EVER advertise the use of other os. So they DID NOT commit a crime since it was NEVER a advertised feature.
