Sony has filed a new patent for stereoscopic technology that will allow different individuals to play 3D games without the need for split-screen. According to the patents description, the "Stereoscopic Screen Sharing Method and Apparatus Patent" will render separate images on one screen, which can be filtered by 3D glasses. According to Digital Foundry’s resident tech-head Richard Leadbetter:

"Stereo 3D is all about generating two different images - one per eye. The glasses work by making sure that the right images are sent to the correct eyes."

"The theory here is that instead of having stereo 3D, the glasses each point to either the left or right "eye" view, which will be the view of each player in-game. So two screens are being generated, one goes to each player. Simple!"

Sounds cool, what do you think guys?

of course youd need a tv that was good for 480Hz (4x120Hz) for 60fps stereoscopic each :-)

You would only need 120HZ for each person if they were each getting 3D. Instead each person will receive non-3D images. So a 120hz television could support 2 people at 60 FPS each or 3 people at 40 FPS each, or 4 people at 30 FPS each... and our eyes only see at 30 FPS anyway.

Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken on any aspect.

Good post, I originally heard the human eye had a cap of 120 or less, but http://amo.net/NT/02-21-01FPS.html is claiming 200+ fps using a USAF study.

If the link gets taken down you can just google it, but I wouldn't trust wiki.

what ignorant low life came in here and down voted everybody? At least give a reason if you're gonna play these little immature games.

Actually that is all wrong.

You can see 3D at 2fps. Think of a red/blue 3D image. There's TWO IMAGES on that piece of paper. Put on your glasses you have 3D.

What you are referring to Hz. Today's TV standard is 50Hz and 60Hz. So you need 100Hz or 120Hz for shutter based 3D.

A 120Hz TV could never support 4 people. 30Hz would be a horrible refresh rate. You would see nothing but flicker.

A 120Hz TV would be able to support 2 people at 60Hz per person running anywhere from 1fps to 50 million fps...doesn't matter. Whatever your hardware is capable of supporting.

However, I assume we're also talking about HDMI and HD? In that case HDMI supports 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps.

However, we are also talking about a Sony console. They have locked their unit into supporting 60fps. Unless they lower that, we're stuck! In order to support his new way of using your TV, a 120Hz unit would have to downgrade to 720p OR LESS in order to give two people 60fps each.

I see absolutely no way in supporting 3 people unless you NOT ONLY jump to 240Hz but also lower the fps to something a little more normal like 24 or 30.

There is a technology available that I've seen used in a car (a Range Rover?) which, using the same screen, allows the driver to view his Sat Nav and the passenger to watch a DVD. This could be employed on a TV I'd have thought and would mean that you don't have to sit there in dopey glasses.

Screen peaking is one thing but, now individuals will get an entire screen for split screen/ screen sharing.

Wow! This can be awesome especially since companies have released 600 Hz televisions and now all they need is release these fast refresh rates with a 3d capability and then you can have multiple people using the same screen at the same time for different purposes! Genius!

it'd be the same as it is on split screen. all the sounds would come from the main speakers. i don't think it's so much as playing different games on the same tv, just the same game but a whole tv to yourself in multiplayer. personally, i'm excited for this. no screen peeking, and i always play co-op with my stepdad and/or friends.

This could be good for offline team play too. Like one team on one image and the other team on the second. that would take a lot of processing power i would think.

i'm i the only 1 noticing the 2 ps3??
and a dvd player which seems like you will need more then a ps3 to do this!!!
probably to allow the games to run smoothly!
any takers??

yeah because the patent depicts that 3 people are doing different things on the same tv.

so the 1st guy is watching a movie with the dvd player

2nd guy is playing a game on a ps3

and 3rd playing a different game on the 2nd ps3

Now I can play Bad Company 2 While my brother plays uncharted. It has really sucked since he got older and now want to play something other than Mario. I used to get the PS3 24/7 now I don't...

no, no you cant

unless your talking about hooking up an xbox to play BC2, even then that idea is far far away, and probably wont ever happen, VR will probably kick in before tv manufacturers decide to allow that

Brilliant idea, people will still yap about wearing glasses

seriously went to the movies last night to see toy story 3, 3d effect did not give me even the slightest discomfort (avatar gave me some)

seriously, many people wear things on theyre head for work
safety glasses, glasses, ear plugs, masks

just get use to it

also lets not forget we have no problem wearing headphones/earphones, or using a bluetooth headseat. Why should this be any different

go go karting or paintballing, and youll soon notice the full face mask/ helmet doesnt bother you

was thinking about buying a 3dtv, might hold of for glasses which can be swicthed into different modes though

People already say 3D is going to fail for mainstream because the average person wont want to wear the glass for any major length of time so.... why would this be any more of a success?

Plus, you have to listen to all audio via crappy ear plugs. Screw that!

dunno what kind of headphones/earplugs you have, but you should go and get yourself some "sennheiser" earplugs.

What the heck does 'sennheiser' have to do with the crappy ear plugs that these glasses will most likely come with?

You wouldn't get to bring your own.

You can't compare safety glasses to this because work's just something you have to do so you just accept doing things you don't like, but i'm being expected to use glasses for games, tv and movies and then of course the augmented reality glasses they working on to wear outside.

But since this technology uses polarized light, if a person tilts his/her head, then wouldn't that person see a different person's screen?

I don't see anything that suggests this uses polarized 3D. From what I can tell it's all shutter based.

Either way, no, circular polarized 3D would not have a 'head tilt' issue. Only linear polarization would have that problem. In other words, the same junk you see in IMAX 3D.
