Sony files patent for a PS3-PS2 adapter

Japanese forums and message boards have been buzzing lately over one particular patent from Sony. This patent, filed by SCEJ, shows an adapter that links a previous-gen console to a current-gen system. Much of the buzzing, of course, would revolve around what this means for the PS3 and PS2.

The device in described in the schematics comes equipped its own processor, a DVD decoder/emulator, plus its own sound and graphics processors. Siliconera has verified that this does exist in Japan's patent database. It appears Sony may still have plans for the ten-year-old PS2, which still happens to be active in the market.

The bigger question is, "What will it do?" The PS3 pretty much does everything that its older brother can and more, so attention turns to the PS2's only edge - backwards compatibility. Then again, why bother with that when you have the PS2 right there? A PS2 HD upscaler of sorts with HDD install, maybe?

even if it was $100, hack $150, as long as it used the one HDMI cable from my PS3 to upscale and smooth my PS2 games then I say sign me up for a pre-order! I mean the processing power is in the PS3 to decode PS2 games but if you just add a co-processor (judging by the schematics) so that you can ease the burden then you can get smooth playback without the software emulation hit to graphics quality.

If it is still on the table for R&D I hope they push forward because then imagine being able to have PS2 games on PSN for digital distribution. (Or just the pleasure of digging through the $5 bin at game stores)

The 360 has a Xbox 1 emulator so why the hell can't Sony? If it's too difficult for them to program for their own console then what chance does anyone else have.

So does the 360 and the Iphone and every device with any amount of power behind it, if Sony say they have trouble emulating Ps2 it either means they lying to stop people playing too much Ps2 games and not buying enough Ps3, or it just shows how badly designed the Ps2&3 really is.

It has to do with the types of processors being used. In fact this only proves how much better the PS3 is designed. Previous PS3's had an extra compenent in it (presumably the same type of either chip/processor the PS2 had) to run PS2 games off of, it caused the price to raise more than it needed to so they cut that, the memory card slots, and the extra usbs to lower the price. Now please shut up you 360 troll, the PS3 is obviously better built than your shit console. A PS3 can recognize your 360 games but, your 360 cannot recognize a PS3 game. How many cores does your 360 have, 3 only if you have paid the extra price for an elite, all PS3's come with an 8 core cpu. We could literally run two of your games at the same time with no problems if the games could receive inputs from the PS3.

"We could literally run 2 of your games at the same time" the fact you actually believe the Ps3 is twice as powerfull as the 360 makes any comment you made on technical ability void and laughable and blindly Sony fanboyish. MS made a fully working emulator that runs on 360 which shows their console is user friendly enough to easily program for, but if Sony can't do this it just shows how unnecessarily difficult their consoles are to create for, and this is the reason the 360 versions of games are almost always better.

no the ps3 can actually do that. but it'll take alot of time and money because programming for more processors is not something alot of programmers have alot of skill in seeing as the technology is pretty new.

a console that is harder to program for doesn't make it user unfriendly, it makes it programmer unfriendly. But it's because of lazy programmer companies and people like you that the game industry is stagnant. everything has to be easy and user friendly.

Thats not it. I belive they did remove the ps2 backwards capability from the ps3 cause the manufacturing cost was too high. After all it was harware not software. The ps2 is pretty hard to emulate and the best ps2 emulator for the PC has been developed on for a cuple of years and is still not perfect. Som imagine emulating the ps2 on a complicated system like the ps3!
And to sell a seperate hardware will jusst give Sony a new opertunity to make more money..

I think the current problem with emulation is emulating the Graphics Synthesizer. The Emotion Engine emulation is pretty much there, but the way developers use the GS and the design of the GS is making it hard to have a high performing and compatible PS2 emulator

umm the 8 gig model that I have runs PS2 games on an emulator with which Ive had very few problems, why couldnt sony just patch it to newer PS3s or in case they want more money sell it on the PSN, whats the use of a physical add on to the already bulky PS3 (even the slim) if they already got software that plays PS2 games.

If I recall correctly, the 80 GB PS3s had software emulation for the Emotion Engine only, but still required a Graphic Synthesizer chip and a few other components (I think it needed some dedicated memory or an extra chip for the frame buffer). So the PS2 BC is a hybrid of software and hardware.

I had no clue it required hardware as well, I hope this rumor turns out to be true since my PS3 got YLOD recently so Im getting a new slim but Im still considering the idea of buying a PS2 so I guess Ill hold on to see how this turns out since perhaps the add-on is a lot cheaper than the $100 youd have to shell out for a new PS2.

It'll probably be like an ethernet boost or whatever for the expansion bay. I'm betting it'll work as an upscaler and be also used to play PSone or mini games on it too probably? Unless they're thinking about making PS2 games into downloads too?

Sony is going to use the ps2 as a way of adding more content to ps3 games. like both systems will access both disks at the same time or something. but that is assuming this patent is still relevant to sonys plans, for all we know it could be something that was scrapped years ago.

Good, but

any time sooner than now would be acceptable, now that we are able to run the ps3 games by hd I doubt that its going to be long to load ps2 games the same way... so save your money.

Sony should just put out a patch to play PS2 isos. The processor has that power and people are willing to pay. Hell people paid for old maps of Modern Warfare. So why not pay for emulation for your old games. Get it together, Sony!
