Here's something to pique your curiosity. Sony has gone and filed a US trademark for something called "Qriosity." In keeping with the strange spellings and pronunciations of the Xross Media Bar and Qore, that's pronounced "curiosity." They've also started to send out feelers to gauge gamer reaction on possible premium PSN services.

First, the trademark. Spotted by gaming blog Siliconera, the Qriosity trademark was actually filed by Sony, not Sony Computer Entertainment. The interesting part is that it covers "portable gaming machines" and "game services provided on-line from a computer network."

The survey, on the other hand, outlines some potential premium services and their equivalent prices. These include full hour game trials, free access to PSOne Classics, and cross-game voice chat. Sounds like these slot in rather nicely into that "game services provided on-line" part of the Qriosity trademark. If that cross-game voice chat feature ends up being subscriber-only Sony may be facing the wrath of those who have eagerly waited for it, though.

The survey mentions four possible payment plans -- three of which add up to US$ 69.99 a year or US$ 9.99 a month and one running $4.99 a month and $29.99 a year. You can find more about it at the Kotaku source link below.

I like the thought of free access to PSOne classics, but that cross-game chat subscription doesn't seem like a great idea. And what's with Sony's weird naming schemes anyway?

The naming thing has been going on for decades everywhere. Look at the Beatles. People didn't get the name or spelling for years. Or the Oneders (pronounced Wonders) from the movie "That Thing You Do!"

Just someone trying to be orriginal.

so the trademark could also mean something around the lines of the PSOne demos or something....like if youre curious about a certain PSN download (a game or something), you can try it out before you buy it?

idk, just a thought. So long as the current PSN experience doesnt get hindered, Im cool if they added some premium stuff. The main thing I care about is access to PSN and online gaming anyways

# I wouldn't mind paying for PS3 Premium...that_sterlin_kid 2009-12-20 17:50
However, I wouldn't want those who have been waiting for cross game chat to miss out because they can't pay. I feel that way especially because it's been one of the PS3's most anticipated updates. Perhaps those who purchase premium could have a more frequent store update instead. (or at least something that isn't just every Thursday)

# that would be really greatdavidg 2009-12-20 18:00
I would NEVER pay for an online plan, that's for sure. But offering both solutions seems to be the ultimate plan. I mean, people say the ps3 is not good for hardcore online. I'm not hardcore but I still like online gaming, so the free plan is perfect for me. But for those who wants to have a top of the line service without lags for big time competition wants to be able to pay for a premium service. If the PSN can offer both, the xbox 360's XBL would lack all it's exclusivity. The xbox 360 would only have halo and some low end game exclusive than, while the ps3 would have almost all exclusive games of 2k10, plus a PSN premium online service. That would kill microsoft pretty fast. They should have did this a long time ago.

PS: Qriosity is mostly like "Qrio" the sony robot that was named this way for "Quest for curiosity". This is surely simply a prototype name. Sony usually name their services "The Playstation Network Premium Online Gaming Experience"-like. Qriosity is maybe a place to try games in beta, offering plenty of beta testers for devs, and for us a place to get the access to beta games without the usual "chasing the beta keys" experience, lol.

I like the idea of PSone access, but feel this could lead to Sony offering 'premium' online access to those who pay. Lower latency servers or something of the like. It wouldnt surprise me, as it does cost a good deal to run a network.

Should i say the thing that everyone is thinking?

(SPACE)

We don't care about the premium stuff. We just want online play to stay for free... (Meaning we can play and own people for free and chat like we can right now for free) See i said it :D

P.S. The (SPACE) thing is for testing to see if formatting stays if i put that in.

Qrio is a robot made by sony.

Qriocity might be related to that.

I think its going to be more like Qore I mean they haven't charged for online play and they have had the PS2 for almost 10 years so they aren't going to start.

Not interested. There's hardly any PSOne classics on the UK store worth having anyway. Coupled with the dire lack of updates, I'd rather stick with the US store and pay for things with vouchers - it's cheaper and there's more choice.

I srsly hope this doesn't get into productions. I really don't want to have to pay $70/yr for cross voice chat.

This is not a good deal for gamers. I hope everyone says no to this. To me even that is not worth paying to have full access to PSOne games. What next, a yearly subscription to game at all? Maybe a subscription for unlimited movies on the video store would be good. Gaming needs to stay out of a subscription service.

thats a big no on my part. for one, sony has been teasing us with this voice chat thing for too long now. way unfair if they do this. for two, if your like me and cant throw out the extra cash does that mean we can never look forward to an update again?? three, this would only really benifit japanese ps3 owners. seeing how they have way more content than the rest of the world. especially all of us who live in the US who dont have have the stuff the rest of the world has on their PS3 to begin with. oh and four, free online gaming is one of the biggest reasons, at this point in time, why ppl buy ps3. or else it'd just be a more expensive crapbox360. are they offering anything thats really different than Xbox? not really. but they want to charge $20 extra dollars for it? no. just no... no No NO!
