Sony Displays PS3 But Leaves It Turned Off |

Ó

Remember the game Simon Says? Sony said: No playable PS3 games at Leipzig. But Sony also said: 27 playable PS3 games at the Tokyo Game Show next month.
But what about the hardware? The Inquirer reported yesterday that they got to see "what Sony claims to be the final production prototype of the Playstation 3 console." But the console wasn't on because Sony didn't "want to show the live demo as there is a hidden secret feature that Sony doesn't want to show off yet." There was a live demo using the developers' machines, but there was nothing from or the actual machine that is supposed to ship out this November.
We're hoping that Sony will come out with an announcement or something big soon. I'm finding it hard to write PS3 articles when all I have to show is just another picture of the machine turned off (I'm so desperate to flesh out this "no news is good news" article that I've had to rely on exclamation marks! lots!!!).
Maybe Sony is hoarding all the surprises for the Tokyo Game Show? Are they trying to punish the world for the lukewarm reception following E3? But PS3 fans deserve better than that. PS3 fans don't agree that "no news is good news." Sony will have to break the silence before November whether they're ready to or not.

But perhaps this is a good tactic, because it has been successful for Nintendo... whatever concrete info they gave us, we lapped it up, thirsting for any information.

hope they cover that up before the release =/

this is one of those 'slow burning' marketing campaigns... sony seems to think that all they need to do for the 3rd largest videogames conference is show the ps3 prototype production unit in some guy's hands... i hope #1 is right, cos if it doesn't all get spilled at tgs when the hell ARE sony going to be informing us of exactly why we should buy ps3?
also, whatever happened to the pvr capability?

And i`m still mad about the missing rumble.
I put down 50$ to preorder the PS3 , to be there right from the beginning.
But i`m getting serious doubts about the whole thing lately.

Obviously at TGS there's going to be a bunch of big ps3 announcements considering sony is a jap company its only right for them to show off thier console in thier home country.

Ive known companies to use techniques similar to Sony's. They dont release alot of info, and when they do, its only some small detail, not the bigger picture. Sony will use TGS to show everything. They keep as much info stored up as possible about there machine, then release it all in one big go. Its risky business, but it has and does work

ps3 console: approx $650 (after tax)
2nd controller: $50
3 games: approx $200 (after tax)
Extended Warranty: approx $100 (its a sony system and it costs $600 you better get one of these)
total: approx $1000 (and i am sure I am missing something)

Nintendo releases the least amount of information about the Wii and it's getting overly hyped. It works every time. The spore/assassins creed games have hardly been seen yet they are already being called a next big leap in games. It's a marketing strategy used by just about everyone because they know that reality is always worse than imagination. These is the biggest reason why Microsoft doesn't release the price of the HDDVD add-on. People start believing that it cost $100 to match the 499 ps3 but in reality it will be much more and I guarantee you they will not release the thing until after the PS3 launch (Mid December sounds about right). They are just using the add-on as a way to stop potential PS3 buyers who are looking at the PS3 for it's HD capabilities.
Of course Sony does have a few secrets. I am positive about that. Will they be welcomed? By PS3 fans most definitely but haters will down play them or worst say they stole it from somewhere since their fanboy defense mechanism starts kicking in. Anyway I wouldn't be surprise if they show that the new eye toy will be included and that you can traverse the interface with it, play movies, go online etc...

And ? Nothing , nix , nada , nothing.
And now something great is supposed to happen at the TGS.
Of course , it must be.
Sony is japanese , so they`re holding back for their own show.
Right.
The only thing i want to hear is that they have RUMBLE.
If they would say "look Apple OS-X is running on the PS3" ,
i would be like "good for you".
For me it`s all about the games , the best games.
If Sony had "Eight Days" as a launch title , that could be something.
The trailer looked promising.
I`m tired of all the stupid waiting.
And it`s like all the AAA PS3 games are supposed to come out sometime in 2007.
RE5 , GTA4 , MGS4 , GT5....
Meanwhile the Xbox 360 has "Lost Planet" coming in January , "Saints Row" is right around the croner.
AND , they have a decent controller.
This really sucks.

i don't care though, i'm on your side. but it's clear you know that by saying things like that you'll incite a fanboy backlash... this article probs isn't on the 360 site, so you won't incur too much wrath.
i hope the ps3 secret is a real gem... i am just a little bit jaded by the amount of so-called 'great surprises' that companies announce.
the 'insider' info is like me saying 'i know a guy who's on the inside, and he says the sun will rise tomorrow'... it's obvious sony have more to tell us, and they'll choose the tgs - it's their home town, and it's quite close to launch, in fact just close enough to start the media machine...
what about pvr? goddamit i'm annoyed that was just swept under the rug.

PS3 $599 - no tax since I'll buy it online.
Resistance - $60 No tax since I go to china town and they never charge tax. Online would do as well.
Warhawk - $60 Again no tax.
Will not be playing co-op with anyone offline so no need for an extra controller. Will most definitely be playing online. Not until a good sports game comes out (Next Winning Eleven) would I have the need for a second one honestly.
I never buy extended guarantees. Research was done and they found this is where retail stores make the most money. Extended guarantees are never needed and are pure profit for the retail companies. I never bought one and have never been sorry about that decision. It's really like throwing money away. Whatever the guarantee Sony offers is good enough because if it lasted that long will will most like last a lot longer.
Total: $719 dollars. I have spent more than on a crazy weekend in Atlantic City. It's great to be a grown up kids. You get these things called paychecks and these are quite high for a person who is a professional (have a degree and interestingly enough according to the latest statistics most home console gamers are professionals).
PlayStation 3 Fund: (my savings) $20,000/$719 yep I think I am ready.

First off I am a grown up and a professional and if you only make $20,000 thats sad as I make more than 2x as much as you and still feel like I need more $. Secondly, your gonna buy one online, HAHAHAHAH good luck with that. The Shortage is gonna be horrible. thirdly, if you are gonna buy a $600 sony system with no extended warranty then you are a bigger moron than the people that get the $500 console. Sony systems break and I would hate for 60 days to pass and then have a problem and have to shell out another $600. Fourth, you dont need a second controller, well I am sad to hear you dont have any friends, but most people do have friends, or roomates, or younger brothers. And I also see that you only included 2 games in your purchase list. Thats really sad that you are gonna buy a console for only 2 games. I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I have bought Every game system on launch day and never bought less than 4 games (with the exception of the Nintendo 64, since they did not have 4). And you bring up online play. Well listen to this, and anyone with a 360 and Live will agree with me here: "THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL PS3'S ONLINE CAN COME CLOSE TO THE XBOX LIVE EXPERIENCE"

also, i've had two PS2s. one was the one i purchased around the time it launched, the other is the slimline that i got when i traded in my first one. get what i'm implying? if not: my first PS2 didn't break. hell, my PS1 didn't break either. not everybody has had defective PS2s. it's a false generalization. believe me, if there was an internet back when the NES was out, you may have been surprised with how many people may have reported issues with their Nintendos. all mass produced products have the chance of having a few defective units. it's not exclusive to just Sony consoles, and is about as annoying as when people say, "All X Box has is first person shooters," or, "The PSP has no games!" it's simply not true.
just because he doesn't need a second controller doesn't mean he doesn't have friends. i have plenty of friends, and, surprise, surprise, they aren't all gamers. and really, out of the friends that live in this state, only 2 of them play video games (my fiance, and my best friend). my other gamer friends live out of state, so in order to play games with them, it'd have to be online (we're already planning on taking each other on in Warhawk and Resistance come November 17).
and who's to say that he's only going to buy 2 games? so far, only Warhawk and Resistance are 100% confirmed as launch titles. everything else is up in the air. i'm pretty sure that when a concrete list of launch titles is revealed, he may consider purchasing more (i know i am). outside of Resistance and Warhawk, i myself will probably only purchase one more game (Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, so i can play it with my fiance. or Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, if it comes out on launch). good for you that you shelled out money for 4 launch games, when most launch titles are mediocre. i hope you got good store credit when you inevitably returned them when better games came out. being first to gobble up a new game isn't always a good thing (i still have nightmares about Oni, the game i picked up when i got my PS2. *shudder*).
finally, the comment regarding PS3 online in comparrison to X Box Live just makes me consider if you truly are "a grown up and professional." none of us have played PS3 online, and PS2 online is not an indicator of what PS3 online will be, especially when considering that Sony has said they will be implementing a service very much like X Box Live. who knows, the PS3 online experience could be *better* than X Box Live. it's already free. that's a plus. but it could be worse.
if you like to give the benefit of the doubt, why don't you give it to PS3 online. you could be surprised. me personally, i don't like to play online (unless it's City of Heroes/Villains, but i tend to only play that with my fiance), as people are generally douchebags, and sore losers (meaning i don't play competitively either, unless it's with friends. and even they're sore losers sometimes), so outside of downloading games/demos, an X Box Live type service does little else for me.
not everybody thinks Live is the greatest thing since sliced bread (i don't even *like* bread. much). it's not what's going to get me to purchase a 360 (Mass Effect and Crackdown might, as i played Crackdown at E3 and was friggin awesomely fun). i'm a single player gamer, with some co-op thrown in when the games support it (the Warriors, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Timesplitters 3, Medal of Honor: European Assault being the most fun co-op games i've played this year).
anyway, your comments were so amusing i had to comment back.

as for the online if it is free and it has one unified interface meaning i have 1 user name and password for all the games then thats all i need , i was pissed when i bought an online game for a ps2 and had to create a new user name and password each time.

Please reread my comment. I don't make 20,000 a year, I have 20,000 on private savings (not including my investments, pension and 401k plans that most people have nowadays). I live in New York City as I mentioned many times before and pay 1,500 rent. I would not survive here even with your salary.
" if you are gonna buy a $600 sony system with no extended warranty then you are a bigger moron than the people that get the $500 console"
Up to now, I have never had a system break on me. Even my playstation lasted as I gave it away to some kid in Ecuador. My Sony dvd player, my tv, my playstations all work fine for years. Extended guarantees on electronics are a scam and if you don't realize that than no wonder you feel like you need money. Here is an interesting fact, 99% of electronic devices become obsolete before they break. BTW why are you so angry? I sense the fanboy defense mechanism force within you.
" Fourth, you don't need a second controller, well I am sad to hear you dont have any friends"
I play with my friends, brothers (no roommates but my bro loves winning eleven and one of the reasons I mentioned it) but the games I'm buying are not exactly 2 players games. Fighting and sports titles are where offline multiplayer shines. I'll just continue to play with friends and family on a current gen system until I get sports or fighting titles for the PS3. I bought the 360 on the launch window and I still don't have a second controller for it.
"And I also see that you only included 2 games in your purchase list. That's really sad that you are gonna buy a console for only 2 games"
I find when I have too many games at once I don't enjoy any of them. When I pirated games on the Xbox I hardly played any even though I had almost every single one. Most people don't have time to play 1 game let alone 4 games. You are in the minority if you buy 4. Most people only buy one game. I am not buying a console for two games. I am just buying 2 games to start. People who buy a computer don't buy it for one program, they probably only use a couple of programs until they have a need for more yet they are more than happy to spend thousands of dollars on a PC.
"And you bring up online play. Well listen to this, and anyone with a 360 and Live will agree with me here: THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL PS3'S ONLINE CAN COME CLOSE TO THE XBOX LIVE EXPERIENCE"
I have the Xbox and 360. Live isn't out of this world what are you talking about? Especially when it comes to multiplayer gaming. Is actually inferior to what you have on the PC. Most games lag and the amount of players at a time is a joke. Halo2 is great on live however, but only 8 players at a time. Prey on live was so bad (lag) for me that I stop playing the game completely. Let me put it to you this way, all they need to do to match the ease of use with the multiplayer availability of live is have a centralize database of user information and stats where all servers pull their information from and insure every PS3 has Ethernet. PS2 online sucked because the Ethernet adaptor was not included and ultimately was not adopted by many ps2 owners. Why would Sony spend money on making it great if hardly anyone was on it? You are comparing apples to oranges if you are comparing the PS2's online services.

I live in New York city as well. And yes i did misread your "savings" statement.
And I WILL BE GETTING A PS3!!! I am a gamer I get all systems. Maybe it seemed like I was attacking Sony (and you). My statements were of a general nature to most consumers not just you as an individual. More people will be getting a second controller than people who will not. As for the warranty issue, Not just because its sony but ANYTHING I BUY OVER $500 I WOULD PUT A WARRANTY ON. Buying a product for that much $ is an investment and like you spoke about your assets and investments, well I also have assets and investments and I protect them, and that is what a warranty is protection. I have a warranty on my 360 as well. I'm not telling anyone not to get a PS3 (as it would make me a hypocrite). I'm just saying be aware of what your getting, dont thinks its gonna come out and crap all over 360 because you are sadly mistaken. I think it is stupid not to get a 360 because you are waiting for a PS3. 360 WILL pump out monster games. NO GAME HAS EVER SOLD AS MUCH AS HALO 2, this is a fact. With that in mind I dont think it is fair to say SOny has a game bigger than Haol 3 coming out. Not to mention Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human, Crackdown and Lost Planet to name a few. RE5 will be on both systems as will most 3rd party big titles. As for the online components. Maybe I should not jump the gun, but come on. XBOX live is the truth. It took microsoft two generations to get Live where it is now. Sony is gonna beat it out in 1? very unlikely. All I am saying is that if you have the money get both. If you dont get a 360.

Super Mario Bros. (NES - 40.24 million) is the best selling game of all time.
I am sorry to tell you but First Person Shooters will be plentiful this holiday season and God of War will sell like mad but I doubt is halo 2 numbers. This was completely not the case when the halo games came out.
"With that in mind I don't think it is fair to say Sony has a game bigger than Halo 3 coming out. Not to mention Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human, Crackdown and Lost Planet"
Grand Turismo, Final Fantasy XIII, MGS4 are as big or bigger than Halo 3 on name alone. Then you mention new IPs. Well I could easily say Heavenly Sword, KillZone, Resistance:FOM, WarHawk, Motorstorm, The Getaway, DMC, Assasins creed, Naughty Dog's untitled will be bigger than all the titles you mentioned. You might say Assasin's creed will come to the 360. Well yeah but so might Lost Planet (which is a good game but Japanese companies making shooters haven't proven themselves yet) and Oblivion. Don't get me wrong I am extremely exited about Gears of War but truth be told I want more games on the PS3 launch title than all the games the 360 has in it's year lead (Let see Gears of War, GRAW and Oblivion all of which are FPSs =( ). Resistance, WarHawk, Motorstorm, Untold Legends look very promising not to mention the games coming out shortly after. I hope I have enough time since I'll probably be busy with FFXII.

keep fighting the good fight! (that is, anti-FUD. of *any* system, but the PS3 has been getting the lions share of that lately. comes with the territory of being on top, i guess).
anyway, people seriously need to get over the price of the PS3. at least they've *announced* the price and release date, unlike *other*, nameless gaming publishers...
also, a lot of the people *****ing about the price are waxing poetic about how they aren't getting the system for $600. ok. good for you. but there are millions of people that will take your place, that see value in the PS3, and see it as a worthwhile investment. if they want to spend the money on it, let them. what does it matter to you? do you think that i care that The Professor is shelling out some money for a PS3 this November? no, i don't(unless i lived in New York and were his bud, then i'd be like, "PARTY OVA HEEEARRR!"

A fellow by the name of Scrivener @ General Mayhem forums made a huge post about PS3 last friday (8/18):
Quote:
Wow, so much to cover - where do I even start? I'll just have to be careful here as there's certain things that aren't supposed to be revealed until the TGS.
Note: This post is by no means unbiased. I make no warranty that what I have to say will not piss you off – especially if you’re a one-company fanboy whore. I’ll answer questions and I'll share what I know… but I’m not going to argue with the retards lurking in the Games forum shadows… especially when I am way more informed than you are*. Believe that or not (it's a fact), I don’t give a flying **** what some pimple faced punk in the digital jungle thinks. This is a favor for those who appreciate it. Hence, if you do not appreciate inside information, then do us all a favor and **** off.
Now that that’s out of the way…
Lets start with the bad news - the launch lineup is shrinking. Originally, the list was 30 titles (1st and 3rd party). Currently, the list is about 15 titles (can’t get more specific because at this stage it literally changes by the hour). There is an up-side, however. The extra development time is making a world of difference. Some of you saw Heavenly Sword at E3 and it looked pretty good... that is, it looked like your typical 360 game. The team has been hard at work piling on layers and layers of detail and as of right now, it looks like ****ing Advent Children (you thought Metal Gear looked good? You gotta see this). It's also being given a God of War type violence upgrade, since they found out the graphical realism and brutality of the combat (bloodless though it was) was getting it a Mature anyway. Seriously, it will blow your mother****ing mind (although it’s sad that having really awesome graphics influences the ESRB ratings these days). The current release target is March.
Killzone 2 - This one has been MIA since last years E3. It is still in development and it is, unequivocally, the PS3s big "secret weapon." Announcements are being held back until closer to the PS3 launch as it's going to generate a monumental amount of buzz. It's one of those things that I can't get into too much detail about. However, it looks exactly like the video. Yeah. That video.
LAIR - This won't be out until next summer at the earliest, but this one is also abso****inglute ly incredible. Missions basically involve unscripted AI-driven massive scale battles (we're talking Helms Deep here) and you control a single dragon and rider. The game is essentially playing an RTS with itself and it's up to you to influence the tide of the battles. This is also very dark and mature.
More bad news, these titles are all now Q1 '07 releases or later. Resistance: Fall of Man is being primed as the killer ap launch title. Some of you are sure to go nuts for it as it's like a crossbreed between Half Life 2 & Call of Duty. Personally, I ****ing hate both those games so I was not terribly impressed with the single player. Now multiplayer is a whole different beast, because the weapons are strange as ****. For example, there's this energy-burst weapon that just passes through solid matter. Almost everything in the environments is destructible as well and has physical properties. Hence, certain materials will offer better protection than others. Multiplayer is the big focus of R:FoM anyway, with half a dozen game types and support for up to 40 players.
Someone asked about sound in the other thread - and while specific technical details were not divulged, the sound in Resistance was discussed at length. Resistance has fully simulated sound waves. The system actually checks distances, atmospheric density, wind, what materials the sound is bouncing off and passing through, etc, and modifies the base sound accordingly. Hence, every sound travels through space in real time and distorts just as it does in the real world. There is also support for 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 sound setups... so howe
