Sony: Developing on PS3 first will lead to better games on the Xbox 360

PS3 silver - Image 1 The one-year headstart that the Xbox 360 had over its competitors has resulted in many developers making the console their native development platform. As it stands, a lot of cross-platform releases between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 start out as Xbox 360 projects, and are later ported to the PS3.

Sony's VP for product marketing Scott Steinberg understands this, but says the trend will change significantly in the years to come. He says third-party developers are starting to pick up on the potential of the PS3 hardware and should make it their native development platform at the end of the day.

Steinberg also said that doing so will not only improve the quality of third-party games on the PS3, but should make their Xbox 360 counterparts look better. He called this move a "no-brainer" and explained the idea in an interview with Games Industry. We quote:

We're now in our third and fourth generations with first party, and that will start to create some distance with the competition - from our standpoint - but as the third parties begin to move their development to native PS3 and port down to other platforms, they'll start to see their games' fidelity getting better and better - and in fact I think even Xbox 360 games will start to look better as a result.

There's a historical fact of having the [Xbox 360] dev kits first, so there's the thought of porting down to the late arrivals, but I think that Burnout (Paradise) is a great example of a game that shipped fairly recently that showed what you can do if you start originally on PS3, and we've seen and heard more of that from our third party publisher relations group.

If this is true, then fans of both game systems should benefit from it. After all, nobody loses with better-quality games.

Like the PS2?

» why not

Burnout paradise is the perfect example.

» ouchee for the 360 execs

i agree with Scott Steinberg.

» :)SONY.

This is so true and everybody knows it to. Its a matter of time before Sony PS(3) rules again.

by NarooN - 2008-07-30 23:27
» you're an idiot to disagree with this.

It's so true and obvious. Even Mirror's Edge is the lead version, and that game just looks insane. Obviously if they master the PS3's architecture, or at least get better with it, they'll do better on 360 as well.

I don't know how much better that would make Xbox 360 games.

by Apeaggedon - 2008-07-31 04:35
» i agree

i mean, the 360 games are allready not as nearly next gen as ps3,but it bieng an 4-8gig cd disc space for games,i dont know how much better they can get.

oh and BTW ps3 allready rules and will continue to rule forever.

» not really...

Microsoft tried this last generation. It didn't help. The Box was far superior to the PS2 yet Xbox owners got shiner PS2 ports. Besides, we're still talking ease of development here. If Sony can get their act together and actually help developers outside their precious 1st party devs, you might start seeing better versions. Developing on that system takes time. Just like it took a while to learn how to make games on the original Xbox. This may happen eventually, but market share determines where their going to start. Until then just enjoy the ports. It's the least you Sony boys could do since Xboxers had to put up with it in the past. -V

» Haha

But honestly... the 360 is easy to develop on, so any developer can get their game further starting that way.

It makes the PS3 development stage easier. And criterion games started developing Burnout Paradise for the PS3 first, because they knew it was going to be a bit more challenging. Isn't it better getting the hard ***** out of the way first?

» yeah right

if Ps3 is so superior then how come the graphics for my pS3 are the same as my 360 and the xbox has dvd9(i think max 9gb) and the ps3 has bluray( max keeps on going up and is like 7 million more than the DVD9) ps3 is also not a next gen console and also the 360 and wii. And one reason sony will never be a good gaming company is that they take to long to realese stuff like home which i have been waiting for a year and only get videos of it and in the fall there is only going to be a fall beta. But yeah 360 has it problems too which is the console failer and the wii is not even in the 360 or ps3 league because all it is some cool controllers that kids from 3-10 like and old people and also most girls

» They say it now...

They say this when they have the more powerful console. When last gen, nobody listened to Microsoft when they said the same thing...

It's all about money-grabbing. And the PS3 being the primary platform for third parties will lead to more exclusives.

I don't disagree with them though. I'm just saying that they really don't care about better games as much as they get money... Or they would've suggested this last gen.

I'm sorry but whatever point you are trying to make is completely lost on me. Not because you don't make much sense... it's because you don't make ANY sense.

You probably aren't aware, but there's a magnificent invention called grammar. Now here's the fun part - Grammar make sentences legible, and people will find it significantly easier to understand what you are trying to say.

Anyway, onto the topic. I agree that PS3 should be given more attention by devs, as what they do at the moment, i.e. port everything from the 360 just seems lazy to me. It's like they can't be bothered to put in enough work to get games to look as good, or run as smooth as their 360 counterpart (Orange Box, i'm looking at you. well EA in general really).

» FACT

it is easier to prot a game better and quicker from ps3 to 360.

by GW2 - 2008-07-31 11:31
» oops

spelled port wrong

by na2rul - 2008-07-31 14:25
» the original

xbox had framerate problems due to porting it from PS2, even though being the more powerful console

» PS3 vs. 360

PS3 fans, I guess I can't say that I'm surprised.

No, don't worry, I'm not a fan boy, so don't start pulling your keyboard closer cause I'm not asking for a flame war. I'm just posting this to say RIGHT ON.

I know that I am true to my console, the 360. But I also know that you are true to your console, the PS3. I'm stoked to see this battle take place over the next couple of years. Good luck to you sony fans, for real. I hope it's a close one. I know the PS3 is selling more than ever, but will it take over the 360?

Only time will tell. Thanks for not flaming. That ***** is so annoying.

» its not

"harder" to develop for

it just different but since the ps3 has the better format/hardware if they work on the ps3 first and then port it the ports will look better

by death - 2008-07-31 17:50
» wow

EVERYONE IS A FANBOY OF SOMETHING (wow i h8 this word) whether it be 360, ps3, wii or jesus you defend what you prefer

now i just have a question directed at you would you rather have the better console or the "winner"

by Viphid - 2008-07-31 18:10
» Wow, an educated bigot.

But if you're going to pick on someone's grammar Sony Boi, know that the "I" in "I'm" is capitalized. He's just saying that all systems have problems so just go with it. At least he's not scared to use his/her own name unlike you Sephie-poo. Seriously, a Square brown noser should be able to come up with a name on your own. Oh wait, that's right... J-RPG'ers like you don't really think for themselves do they. You guys just copy what you think is cool. I bet you'd name your kid Snake if your love partner liked games too. Never mind, that wouldn't happen. -V

» I'll keep my 360

Sony lost me after the Playstation. PS2 was crap until GTA 3 came out. My Dreamcast supplied some of the best gaming and when I was done, the XBOX came out. Never looked back. No matter what anyone says, Microsoft isn't going anywhere and their system is perfect for my gaming needs. It has the games I love and the service online and off is unlike anything I've played in the past. You guys don't have to like it, just stop preaching against it. If devs start making PS3 versions first so they can finish the same time the 360 version is done, who cares. They aren't going to port a PS3 version down. Doesn't work that way. Just get over it and support your system by getting the game for that system on release day. -V

» I agree with this article

Look at all the games developed for ps3 independently or ported from ps3, and compare them to those ported from 360. e.g. cod4 developed indepentdently on both platforms, it looked almost identical on both. burnout dev'd on ps3 first, it looked amazing on both. orange box dev'd on xbox 360 first, it was really bad on ps3. Strange how EA is making most profit on ps3, even though the games that are ported to ps3 look poor.
