Sony denies plans of redesigning the PS3

From bulky to sexy - we've seen it happen before with the PSOne and the PS2. That probably fueled the PS3 redesign rumors that have been going around, especially after PlayStation Lifestyle reported that the PSP Go! won't be the only hardware redesign announcement from Sony at E3. But just like the White Dualshock 3 controllers, Sony denies this one, leaving us guessing as to what's gonna come out on E3.

Sony UK told CVG that they "currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3," so there go the rumors. While "currently" is a word I'd like them to qualify, we can probably say goodbye to a slim PS3 on E3. Sony loves redesigning its goodies though, so it's probably just a matter of waiting for a fresh new look for the PS3.

Seriously... does some jacka$$ in his basement go "Hey bud I think Sony might re-design the PS3" on some forum and then it gets picked up as E3 rumor which then becomes facts to some? Honestly, look when the PS1/PS2 got redesigned... was it a couple years into their cycles? Hell no. It was WAY later on.

Given Sony's track record on denials, this rumor is as good as confirmed.

Yeah, it will save them money on production, give a boost to revenue and make customers happy. If they really don't have two guys sitting at their desk looking to save money and parts on the next iteration, they may be shooting themselves in the foot.

Besides, I'm sure theres been at least one timeline of the PS3 somewhere at Sony that says, "Release PS3 Slim - November 201X"

Largely because both people who posted before me are correct. Yes, this is a rumor with what amounts to almost nothing to base it on. However, as Farnesworth said, sony redesigns pretty much all its crap, so in the longer term its practically a given. Also, the 2010 or later for the release of a slimmed down PS3 sounds realistic to me. I would expect them to do the whole blue/white/silver colored consoles first actually.

New Slim PS3 either late this year or next year. If Sony says any form of "no", it's actually a yes. Keep this in mind.

Many people above have stated very true and logical things (Sony loves redesigning and re-releasing their hardware; Sony denials often become humorous because it's so often thin-layered smoke to delay the truth from coming out early).

The only thing is that it IS early yet in the PS3 lifecycle, and that the PS3 look is VERY iconic. No other console past or present has looked like the PS3. While there are some vague similarities to PS2 (the vertical sectionalism), the curved fascia is truly standalone. I have to think that there's some value in that.

I think they'd have to figure out a way to massively shrink components in order to keep the curved structure, and yet shrink the core. (Otherwise, if they 'square it off', it'll just wind-up looking like a chunky PS2.)

Uhh... in return for that money you got your PS3. -.- Which is a cool thing.

Like sony has never redesigned a system? hello psp. like they have never denied redesigning a system again. sony psp. the time frame between them wasn't yrs either.personally I don't care rumor or not. if they redesign it I hope they make it better and give a big trade in value on the old ones but prolly not.

Apparently none of you remember the psphone fiasco.

"Oh its gonna come out soon and we will be able to play UMD's and have memory sticks in them and it will be just like a psp"

There is no way that SONY will be redesigning the PS3 anytime soon. It has technically been remade with the new Microchips and the different features each model has, different HDD sizes, B/C, memory card slots, USB ports, but a overhaul on the entire system, i don't think so.
