Sony cracking the Graphics Synthesizer problem |
Ó
Following yesterday's report that a Sony patent was spotted, pointing to a purely software-based solution to the PS2 emulation issue, TheSixthAxis reports that the PS2 emulation issue isn't due to the Emotion Engine, which is already up and running. The problem lies with the Graphics Synthesizer, which now appears to be an obstacle to downloadable PS2 games on the PlayStation Store.
Since PS3s are already equipped with Emotion Engine emulation, there wouldn't be a need to have a new EE on the PS3. According to lherre at the NeoGAF Forums, "PS3 is capable to run ps2 games with 100 % software emulation but the performance and compatibility is really poor ... the emulator is present in every ps3 in the market (since 2.10 if I remember correctly) but is "deactivated". If you can "see" the ps3 flash you will see some interesting files on it."
Now if Sony manages to fix the issues with the Graphics Synthesizer, it should be possible to see downloadable PS2 games at the PlayStation Store. Then again, that's just the rumor.

I've been shopping around for a used 60gb due to that fact alone. I still play my PS2 from time to time, however its doesn't read all of my discs anymore and I don't want ANOTHER game system hooked up to my HDTV, it would make it extremely cluttered on the stand.
If they resolve this issue this summer, I will definately be picking one up end of summer/ fall timeframe.

Why not put back the EE and GS? It can't be that expensive once the speculated "slim PS3" comes out.

If Sony can get PS2 compatibility on all PS3's, this will be a good thing since people would be able to go out a experience many great PS2 games such as the original Jak & Ratchet games, Kingdom Hearts, Rise To Honor, etc.

Though what I do hope with their update on this is something small, the ability to still be able to use the XMB menu while playing PS1 or PS2 games (PSN Downloaded or origianl Discs).
I think it'd be pretty cool (if they include the private voice chat also) to be able to talk to my friend while playing my old games so that way I'm having fun with the game and able to communicate.
& Maybe even have the PSN tell my friends list I'm playing a "Playstation 2 Game Disc" or "Playstation Game Disc" right?

Now while I still have a bunch of good titles for my PS2(and others I gave to some and never gave it back :( ) I'd rather play PS3 games though. And I have the original. The games coming out is just so effing good compared to the PS2 games. So I wouldn't be mad, in fact I'd welcome this so people can finally buy the PS3, increase the sales and join us playing some fantastic games online. Like Battlefield Bad Company, uncharted 2 and Killzone 2
