Sony Confirms Delay of PS3 Launch in PAL Territories |

Ó
Early this year, we ran an article on US analyst Evan Wilson's speculations on PS3, which mentioned that Sony's next-gen console will be released in summer 2006 in Japan, November 2006 in the US, and March 2007 in Europe. Then in a later article, SCEE President and CEO David Reeves revealed that Europe may be the first to get their hands on a PS3. Then there's the admission of Kaz Hirai that the production of PS3 has started later than expected. With all these news about PS3's entry to the market, who would not be confused?Well, confusion on the Sony PS3 release date is now over: SCEE has issued an official statement. But for the European consumers, brace yourself. Seems like Wilson was on track after all.
PlayStation 3 avids in Europe, Russia, Middle East, and other PAL territories have to wait until March next year. The statement says the launch date has been pushed back due to "the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PlayStation 3." Blue laser diodes are a key component of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive.
As for PS3's launch date in Japan, November 11 is still the date to mark; while North America gets a November 17 launch. Sony still plans to ship six million PS3 units globally before the end of the 2007 fiscal year.

I can see Bill Gates counting his penny's and laughing at this news. Congratulations , you just handed him a few million sales over the Xmas period.
Sony should just distribute what stock they have across all markets, they will sell out wherever they are released but at least they would be seen to treating all their customers equally.
I only hope that this is some sorta sick joke.
Not good enough Sony. Not good enough.

@SONY: DON'T MAKE PROMISSES YOU CAN'T FULLFILL, AND DON'T DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU'VE SAID FIRST. I THINK I CAN SPEAK FOR ALL PAL PS GAMERS. WE'RE DONE WITH COMING LAST PLACE.
THIS IS A GREAT THING TO DO TO LOSE A BIG AMOUNT OF FANS. WAY TO GO SONY!

I shudder to think how many 360s are going to be sold now, and I for one have just bought one based on the PS3 delayed news. MS 360 userbase is easily going to be over 7 or 8 million by March.

I agree, that might be a good move. However, if they were to take 100K units from Japan and another 100K from America, there would be nothing left for Japan and only 300K for America.

-like, STFU! We all know it's a ***** move why do we need a ton of whiners who most likely never even considered a PS3 but now that this info is out it's fair game for sony bashing.

I hate to say it, but I expect the U.S. release to get pushed back also. I think we will get it before Christmas, but not before Thanksgiving. Expect more news at TGS. The good news is the pre-order situation can be sorted out now. No U.S. stores were taking pre-orders and that probably forced Sony to fix the situation.
Man, talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Oh yeah
Sony Sucks!
Just kidding

But it IS fair game for Sony bashing, Hush404, #50.
When before it used to be mostly unwarranted and unfounded claims for Sony bashing, THIS complaining actually has a legitimate reason. And a pretty good reason at that.
This is just Sony's work done upon themselves.
If they didn't want people complaining, they shouldn't have promised something they couldn't pull through. Sure, a few mistakes, we'll forgive and forget, but by now, Sony has pulled out far too many blunders at this stage.

As I, and many others from the PAL arena, feel disappointed/angry/frustrated/annoyed/sad for the extra 14-18 weeks delay of the PS3. I was in the class today when people found out of this. About one third of it wildly discuss about it, with expected expressions "Always us" "Typical Sony" "I can install that blu-ray part myself later" and an unexpected loud slam at a keyboard.
As you know, this will affect your sales in the EU and give two certain known companies a Christmas gift in a million euro class.
Japan: 23.55, Europe: 39.71, USA: 42.97, (millions PS2 sold)
Is it really that big difference between EU and USA sales?
What I see is that EU€599 is worth much more then US$599. So how come? If you sell your PS3 at a higher price in EU in the beginning you earn more. Are you afraid that the PS3 won't be accepted as a computer, but as a gaming console and then get more tax? Wrong, now with a network, graphic card, hard drive and Linux included in every package you have a computer, more a computer then the normal computer 6 years ago. It can't be denied.
You hyped this up with a world wide launch.
You have one thing left to do, share what you got with everybody. Just like your mother told you.

Hi,
Just letting you know that after years of supporting your Playstation (and other) Products (Have had every single Sony console from the launch days) I will NOT be buying any more of your products, and will tell all my friends to looks for alternatives as well. After the anouncement today that, yet again, the European fans is going to be last to get their hands on your new console (by nearly 5 months!), and at a horrendous price compared to other territories, I have lost all faith in your products and bussines decisions. For the last couple of years yours fans have been systematically dissapointed, lied to and taken advantage off. From here on I shall deal exclusively with your competitors; Microsoft and Nintendo for consoles, and Philips, Samsung etc for consumer electronics. I will continue to do so untill your company comes to its senses and starts making good products for normal prices again.
Regards,
*******

At least the US and Japan will get a little more consoles by the end of the year since the Blue Lazer diodes will be delay a month.

and to think i was seeing a slight upwards turn in the general mood about ps3...
well, i guess i might see if wii is worth buying... or i'll just play kingdom hearts2, ff12, god of war 2, okami, zelda: twilight princess, mgs portable ops and maybe others.... at least i can save some money over xmas.
damn shame though, it could have been so awesome to get a ps3 for xmas.
oh, and to all you vigilantes who send those lame 'i was going to buy ps3 but now i'm getting a xbox360' posts and messages to sony, why didn't you already buy one? the 360 has been out for quite a while already, if you want one go buy one, they're all just gathering dust... you'll be sorry though, cos you'll have spent too much to be able to get a ps3 when it does come your way, and you'll feel bad because ps3 is still going to be awesome, just at a later date for us europeans. maybe i'll use my favourite import site, i did it to get a psp and got the giga pack for 140 quig (with p&p) several months before it even reached the uk... ahha! where there's a will there's a way.

For the people who wanted to wait for a PS3 before committing themselves to 360...they did that because of HYPE and Sony's success in the previous generations.
NO BRAND SHOULD GET LOYALTY. That goes for Nike, Nintendo and anyone else. Things change! Hey even I didn't picture myself ever getting a 360...BUT I DID because I knew where the momentum was going. Don't live in denial. Accept change. Wii60 for everyone.

PS3 launch titles are not even great. I've seen many footages of Genji 2. It's slow and seems to handle like Onimusha/Dynasty Warriors. What's so great about that? Ps3 lost Assassin's Creed and now this....
By the time for a common man to get his hands on a PS3, great games are available for Wii and 360. Why get a PS3 now? Just for MGS4? Konami should consider releasing the game for 360 now after this tragic announcement by Sony. I'm pretty sure they're having a secret meeting right now.
With that online handle, you must love Ultimate Warrior with his nonsensical bull$hit. Just like your post. Maybe you and the Ultimate Warrior should consider to "shut the ***** up."
Served.

Besides Europe is getting Wiis in November aren't they? Why don't you guys just buy that until ps3 comes out. Wiis are cheaper than both 360 and Ps3. When your friends show off their PS3 to your 360s(IF you buy one) who gonna be laughing? Your friend will, hes gonna be like i told you to wait. March does seem like a long time away though. But, i'm gonna be rocking on Wii by that time and further.

And now, over a decade later - we STILL get screwed, the same thing is happening, and it's little surprise ... depressing, but little surprise.
I've always loved the PS brand, but I really can't be bothered - Sony's been playing the evasive card for too long, and now they not only only come across as arrogant but also incompetent. There's no way they've just suddenly found out they won't have enough components for a full roll-out - they'll have been well informed about this. God forbid they might take some of the units from other territories to be ... what's that word? Oh yeah. Fair.
All arguments about how the US is a larger market - well, no ***** there, who'd have thought it? - and how Japan is more important - again, that's just genius, wouldn't have guessed that either .... if you decide to completely exclude a territory in favour of others, you're going to alienate a hell of a potential audience. There's not even a guarantee that we'll get it in March, if more units are needed elsewhere. I for one won't be wasting my money on a product that's not only now more expensive (vastly so compared to it's nearest rival) but now won't even be here until after almost everyone else has it. The 360's been looking more appealing lately to me - gonna buy me one of them, along with a Wii when it's out.
Thanks a lot, Sony.

couldn't possibly have anything to do with the *games* does it?
for multiplatform titles, this is a big blow to Sony, as, nothing is stopping the European gamer from purchasing a 360 for games like Rainbow Six and Burnout.
also, what is more frustrating: patiently waiting until November 2006, getting your hands on your shiny PS3, taking it home, only to have it not work because of a faulty component due to it's rushed production cycle?
or
waiting until March 2006, getting a better selection of titles to choose from, and getting a console who's kinks have been worked out since it's launch 6 months before?
i had to wait until March to get my PS2, as i couldn't afford one at launch, and even if i could, there weren't any available anyway. by the time i got my PS2 in march, i had titles like Devil May Cry, Ico, and Onimusha to choose from, and my PS2 lasted me until i traded it in for the slim PS2 ( i didn't *need* to trade it in, but i wanted the slim one).
i live in the US, and i probably won't be able to get a PS3 this November. i may not even get one this year at all. this has been factored into my plans since the PS3 launch date was announced at E3 this year.
you know what i've decided to do? get a 360? get a Wii?
neither.
i'm willing to wait on the PS3 until next year because there are titles i truly want to play that i won't be able to get anywhere else (ie, Lair, Warhawk, Resistance). hell, the console was supposed to launch in Spring in Japan, November in the US, and March 2007 in the UK originally, so, really, nothing has changed from the first laid plans. it's unfortunate, yes, but i'd much rather like to go into the gaming store, look on the shelf, see a PS3, and purchase it then and there (like i did with my PS2) instead of battling my way through a throng of people, waiting in line over night in whatever whether gets thrown at me (hey, it rains in California sometimes), and get home with the chance that my console will be broken and can't be replaced because there aren't any units available to replace it, forcing me to wait anyway.
i can handle waiting until next year, and i'm sure some of my fellow human beings in Europe can handle it too.

They were not delayed, they had a staggered launch just like every other console at the time, with typically, Japan first, US second and then Europe.
This time around, the PS3 was delayed from spring this year to November, where Sony chose to ease gamer concerns by promising a worldwide launch. Now, just 2 months before launch, Europeans are told they will have to wait until March 2007!
Sorry, but that is pushing gamer patience and loyalty to the limits. :|
Many had doubts that the PS3 would be launched in the spring, and guys on websites like this defended Sony's promised launch period as if their lives depended on it, and yet they had wasted their time because the doubters were right. Many had doubts that the PS3 would launch worldwide in Nov 2006, and now again the doubters are right. Many doubted Sony's claims for units available, and they were also right.
I admire your attempts to put a positive spin on these events, however gamers like myself have a good reason to feel annoyed, fustrated, let-down, disappointed etc, since I do feel Sony have been less than honest with gamers on the PS3's launch date.
Did Sony really believe they could launch the PS3 in the spring? I doubt it, it was probably a tactic to deter gamers from buying a 360 (and wait for the PS3 instead). Similarly, the worldwide launch in November was really just wishful thinking, with a launch in Japan and US at best, and a 'slim' chance of other regions IF they were lucky. Of course, they chose to state the most optimistic yet least likely option of a worldwide launch, because to announce a delay in the PS3 was bad enough, but to also say March 2007 for Europe would have been received even worse.
I would have preferred to have known about the delay MUCH earlier, or atleast given the view that a launch in Europe this year was just a possibility, not the certainty Sony made it out to be.
So as you can tell, I feel a mixture of anger and disappointment, and whilst I'm not going to go down the road of some gamers by saying I'm cancelling my pre-order for a 360, I will be keeping my pre-orderfor now, but it's a 360 for me this Christmas (I've been tempted for quite some time btw, so this news has just helped me to make up my mind).

Actually, this is an open forum, as in, it's available for everyone to comment, including xbox fans! Also, there is a difference between fans and fanboys, don't get the two confused.
But even then, although I dislike fanboys of ALL systems, they have as much right here to put their points of view across on QJ, even though they are usually very VERY annoying. :|
