Sony CEO on PS3's perceived shortcomings: we've dealt with this before |
Many followers of gaming news probably know how some developers - like Valve's Gabe Newell - are complaining about how difficult it is to create games for Sony's PlayStation 3, with some even going so far as to say that developing for the PlayStation 3 is a waste of time.
Reacting to this, Sony Computer Entertainment of America's (SCEA) CEO Jack Tretton talked about the general air of dissatisfaction currently surrounding the PS3 with Level Up's N'Gai Croal.
Tretton said that the general complaint that the PlayStation 3 is hard to develop for has been already said about the PlayStation and the PlayStation 2, but both systems later proved to be console winners in the long run.
He also commented that while there were other consoles that were easy to develop for, those other consoles didn't prove to have the same "staying power" as the previous PlayStation incarnations. He continues:
If it's put in a perspective of ten years, the first 8-10 months is taken relative to getting out the gate quickly and potentially fizzling out in less than ten years. That's certainly never been our intention. We sacrificed short-term challenges for long-term wins.

This is the exact same he says everytime something bad is said about the PS3. "Don't worry. We'll win it in the long run."
Spotted a mistake, you said dealth instead of dealt. don't mean to be harsh.
hahaha! oops. sorry 'bout that. a slight slip of the finger. LOL. mischief managed. typo fixed! ^_^ and no, you're not being too harsh. thanks for pointing it out, Cyport! ;-)
"We've heard that on the original PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 and the Playstation 3." We heard this before on the Playstation 2, we did not hear that on the original Playstation. If anything, the original Playstation was greeted with nothing but praise from developers. Not only were they freed from the tight grip Nintendo had on the industry at the time, but the alternative console, Sega's Saturn, was an absolute nightmare to developer for in comparison to the Playstation. I'm sure other gamers here who are old enough to remember can recall that it was the Saturn's complexity that led to it's downfall (because 3D was added to the console late in developement), and eventually this led to the downfall of Sega as a console producer (despite a last effort with the Dreamcast). For example; http://www.mariamagic.com/music-games-media/swap-magic-san-andreas-fix-playstation-ps2.htm "The Playstation (a.k.a PSX) was released shortly after the Sega Saturn on December 2nd 1994. The console was an immediate success selling over 100,000 units it’s first weekend. Developers found the Playstation simpler to develop for then it’s 32-bit rival Saturn." http://www.mess.org/old-web/sysinfo/saturn.htm "In 1994 Sega launched its new 32-bit console, just a few weeks ahead of its rival Sony PlayStation. The PlayStation was much easier to develop for and quickly overtook the Saturn in sales." http://techcenter.davidson.k12.nc.us/spring0211/Systems.htm "The Playstation, however, was easier to develop for so better and more games came out for it and crushed the Saturn." So Tretton is right so say developers complained about the PS2 (and they had good reasons to, especaiilay at the beginning), but it is not true for the original Playstation, which developers loved and therefore supported the console to such a degree that it made the console the market leader. :|
PS1, and PS2 pwned the competition in the long run. Hell, the PS1/PS2 killed off the Dreamcast, and stopped Sega from making consoles ever again,. Now Sega is developing games FOR Sony (and other companies as well). PS1 beat the Saturn, N64, and Dreamcast, PS2 beat Xbox, Gamecube, and Dreamcast (basically), and now it's PS3 vs Xbox360 vs Wii. 8I'm seeing loads of analysts saying that the 360 will have a good holiday season this year, and then after that, PS3 will win everything else and "catch up". I believe that is true, especially because : *Introduction of 40GB PS3 *Earlier price drop of 60GB PS3 *Recent price drop of 80GB PS3 (and it comes with games and movies half the time) *developers starting to developer more for PS3 *developers starting to understand the PS3 architecture more and more but that's the gist of it. It couldn't get any better,

cause they always do...
PS1 and PS2 were not easy to develop for in the first year but got better and easier as time progressed and same as PS3. The PS3 future is very bright and could win again. But as a gamer and consumer im enjoying all the console war stuff. It makes developers make better and realistic games to compete and stay on top. Which is great for all of us in the end. We are the only one who benefits from the console wars, since we buy and love the games. I congratulate all the devs and companies trying there best to bring the best games to all of us, it makes me, as a gamer and consumer proud.
"PS1 and PS2 were not easy to develop for in the first year but got better and easier as time progressed and same as PS3." Well, all consoles get easier to develop for over time, with experience of the system accounting for much of this, however devs have never complained about the original Playstation being difficult. Search the net and you will only find comments about how much easier the Playstation was to develop for compared to consoles like the Saturn, and you will not find anyone complaining about it in the way they complained about the PS2 and the PS3. "The PS3 future is very bright and could win again. But as a gamer and consumer im enjoying all the console war stuff.... I congratulate all the devs and companies trying there best to bring the best games to all of us, it makes me, as a gamer and consumer proud." That all well and good Stealth and I agree to a point, however it's a shame that you don't actually show this attitude in your posts on QJ, since you only seem to be happy when these 'great games' are coming to the PS3 and unhappy when they go to the 360. Your pro-PS3 and anti-360 posts on QJ so far do not reflect the comments you've just made regarding gamers benefitting from competition. Perhaps you're changing your attitude now, and if so, I would say well done to you (just like Mister Common Sense), but if not, then your post were just empty words my friend. :)
"however devs have never complained about the original Playstation being difficult. " While it was a little bit easier compared to Saturn, it was still difficult to develop. Hell Jack Tretton states this above. "That all well and good Stealth and I agree to a point, however it's a shame that you don't actually show this attitude in your posts on QJ, since you only seem to be happy when these 'great games' are coming to the PS3 and unhappy when they go to the 360. " When have i ever been unhappy when they go to 360, Where do you get this stuff. When have i ever been mad when DMC4 GTA4(which was their fault) and whatever other games go multiplat. I never stated this, what i have stated was "Just cause those games were Exclusive to PS2, doesn't mean they were meant to be exclusive to PS3(besides GTA4). So your point there is moot. "Your pro-PS3 and anti-360 posts on QJ so far do not reflect the comments you've just made regarding gamers benefitting from competition. Perhaps you're changing your attitude now, and if so, I would say well done to you (just like Mister Common Sense), but if not, then your post were just empty words my friend. :)" Hmm i have never see you before so i take it you only heard stories, I actually was not a anti-360 in fact im getting one very soon. I love Sony alot but thats cause i Prefer them more. Don't get your self fooled i played Halo 1 halo 2 a few games and xbox before and liked them alot. The only time on here i even came close to bashing the 360 was to counter MCS fanboyish rants on PS3. Since he got a PS3 and grown up there was no need for me to retort back. Im a gamer plain and simple, im a consumer plain and simple, and these console wars makes me proud as i stated above. However MCS has taken direction to the Wii and i have now taken action as well, but not bringing in 360 for reasons. Quixand and others know me more and they know im not a anti 360 fanboy. If thats how you perceived my post then you had no idea the reason for me doing so. So in a way when you say if i changed by me stop using the 360 to counter MCS than yes i have, other than that im the same. I love my PS3 and getting soon a 360 for Halo 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2. So my words are not empty.
"Hmm i have never see you before so i take it you only heard stories, I actually was not a anti-360 in fact im getting one very soon. I love Sony alot but thats cause i Prefer them more. The only time on here i even came close to bashing the 360 was to counter MCS fanboyish rants on PS3." Yes, it was always obvious you preferred Sony, but don't make out all your 360 bashing was purely in response to MCS, because I've been here long enough (first post Jan 2006) to remember you always siding with the PS3 fanboys, agreeing with them on whatever they said against the 360. Yes you responded to attacks from 360 fanboys, but the way you did so was to act like them by attacking MS and the 360 in return, which made you no better than they are, i.e. no different. There are many fanboys on QJ that I've argued against in the past (under a different name before the changes here on QJ), but I never felt the need to attack their favourite console or company in response because that's not the way I feel, it's not what I believe. So if you didn't have issues about MS or the 360, then you wouldn't have said the things you said and joined in with the PS3 fanboys. But like I said, I'm pleased both you and MCS have changed now, but please don't pretend that you were a 360 fan all along who was simply defending the PS3, because that's no more truthful than MCS's claim that he bought a PS3 by accident on Ebay! :)
Hey Stealth, I agree with Unreg. I too got the impression that you were anti-360. But, if you are over that, then there is no harm in admitting to that and saying that you have changed your mind about the 360. People change their mind everyday, so why not you? Anyway, I love both consoles and am glad that you've moderated your stance as well, as I'm of the opinion that any decrease in flaming sessions is a good thing.
slow news day.
