PS3 price slashed - Image 1It looks like things are heating up in the holiday phase of the next-gen console wars. Sony Corporation CEO Howard Stringer has reported that sales of Sony's Playstation 3 game console have more than doubled since the company decided to slash the 80GB PS3 model's price by US$ 100 and offered an alternative 40GB PS3 model.

According to Mr. Stringer, the sales boost (having effectively reached 100,000 during the week after November 11) was the breakthrough that the company had been awaiting since PS3's launch. Mr. Stringer also said that Sony is poised to benefit from the reported shortage in the supply of Nintendo Wiis.

As the next-gen console wars are far from over, time will tell whether Sony will be able to meet or exceed the glory of the Playstation 3's hardware predecessors.

It's funny they announced the 40GB 2 days before the September NPD numbers. Now they have announced a sales increase 3 days before the October NPD numbers. I guess US sales are going to be pretty ordinary for October, but good for November. Good to see an increase in sales. Would of been the end of the PS3 if the 40GB still couldn't move units.

When the x360 dropped it's price, it made the same. It's normal, lol. Just think about a guy that wanna have a ps3, but he's not sure since it's not cheap, than, POW, it's cheaper of 100$, lol. Or even worse, it's cheaperof 200$ (40g model), than, he's crying tears of joy, running toward to closer store, and when people see him runnin, with his eyes full of joy (anime style), they can just wonder what it is, and follow him to the store!, lol.

No but anyway, it's not hard to understand why a price drop boost sales, lol. I bought mine because of the price drop (80g model). They even gave me a free remote + Lair (and motorstorm was in the box), so I got a PS3 80g, a remote, Lair, and motorstorm, for 499$, lol. That's a good offer I think. And now the x360 premium and the 40g ps3 (wich have mor or equal things to compare with the x360 premium, the 80g ps3 compare to elite x360) are the same price, and the 80g ps3 and the elite x360 are the same price, so it's gonna be a BIG clash of powers! :D (Titan's clash) It's gonna be great for us, since they'll have to lower their price another time, lol.

I agree that the offering will keep getting better while the PS3 lags behind the Wii and 360. Also Sony needs to bring the PS3 price down to compete with Toshiba's HD-DVD players. Besides there's enough gaming this holiday if you already own a 360 and/or a Wii.
