Every gamer knows the history between PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live. At the start of the console online services battle, Sony's online service has always been on the shadow of Xbox Live. Now Sony has admitted
they are late in offering platform-level online support for the PS3.

Speaking in the latest issue of of Edge magazine, Sony Computer Entertainment president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has said:

I think we were late to offer the platform-level support, to make the online functionality work at that level. We made the prior decision that you do not introduce the common centralised network names into every experience, so publishers made their own. That was fine at the start, but as more and more games have online functionality you need a unified approach. So Microsoft took that approach in the last generation, and maybe that's where people see the difference when they compare Xbox Live and PSN

Commenting further on the issue, Yoshida goes on to say that Sony is making improvements with the new 3.0 firmware and further centralising the PlayStation Store into the PS3 experience. He also said that SCE should really continue to look at adding and improving features on PSN  and admits that the company is not ruling out integrating social networking sites like Facebook.

sony=S.O.L

the xmb and the ps3 works fantastic but something in there has made the online a cluster F^&$, seriously sony just didn't think online was gonna be a necessity and now they are in a big a$$ ditch and is struggling to get out.

Am I the only one that owns a PS3 that has no problem with the online aspect of it? sht its simple, hookup your crap right... connect, and stop btching

what you want the thing to massage your balls while your connecting online? at least you dont have to pay to connect a damn antenna to the back of it to pick up a signal

I dont get it either, I have never had a problem with the PSN and online games run as fine as they do.... what makes xbl so much better? I Have a 360 too but no way do I pay for live, there is nothing better in a 360 then a ps3.... seriously

by eromack718 - 2009-09-03 16:20:33
tru butt

theres nothing wrong with the psn but its missing cross game chat ..but 360 is missing bluray games so who is really behind in technology psn could have everything 360 has with a simple update

by GodGates - 2009-09-03 16:26:01
Yeah..

I never get it either. MY Xbox-owning friends always say that Live is awesome or whatever. I ask them why, and they can never really explain it. They just say "You get what you pay for." But you get the same thing! So I just tell them that it only feels like it's better because they paid for it. I've never had a problem with free stuff. :P

by ChaosZero112 - 2009-09-03 16:28:50
You couldn't be more wrong.

It's not a simple update. And it's a lot more hardware than you think. The backbone of Microsoft's service is where the technology is at, not on the system itself.

by narutosaiyan - 2009-09-03 16:36:02
actually

because of what sony has done with their online that we get mmos like ff14 n 360 doesnt

Simply playing games online there is no difference between XBL and PSN. They both work just fine. Downloading games or w/e else you like, same thing, they both work just fine. I think a few areas where MS does slightly better and what people may tout over is A) The amount of info supplied to downloads. In which you get info, screenshots, tech specs, demos/trials (for every game), other downloads like gamerpics, themes etc all linked to each game and easily accessible on the 360. While on the PS3... everything is contained within the PS Store and without half of those features AND they're not connected... so if you say.. want that Batman theme to go with that batman demo you just downloaded... you'll have to go looking through the PS Store's theme sections by hand. Also, demos and trials are an "optional" thing. and B) The whole visual representation of friends, grouped friends, seeing what games they have, achievements, etc. -Sony is getting better with this aspect with each FW upgrade... but as it stands... you get a list of friends which tells you a comment, what game they're playing or whether they're online with a link to their trophy profile. Turn on your 360 and you see your friends status, what games they're playing (same as PS... just a little flashier) and can join "parties" where you can all discuss a game you want to play, boot into a game while still chatting, invite others to play that game, jump out, play a diff game or accept offers to play other games etc. It's very stream lined and IMO what 360 owners hold high as the feature they're most proud of (even if they don't know it :P). Now If Sony would get their ***es in gear and get home to the level they had envisioned, then they would have all that and more in a complete 3D world! Chatting with friends, sharing profiles, media, etc, booting into games, inviting others into those games etc. But as it stands... same functionality... the puzzle is just a bit more pieced together on the XB side of things.

@ ChaosZero112

actually, u couldn't have been more wrong, all the features that the 360 has can come to the ps3 with a firmware update, but it will take loads of time and man power, because for the 360, in game dash board came with the 360's launch, and they can add features to the OS, but for the ps3, the in-game XMB came 2 or 3 years after the launch, sony has to work hard to make these features work with the past games as well.

@ hush404, if thats the only difference then I lol at the people who pay for that, because if they don't pay for those extra tweaks then they aren't allowed to play their games online.... lol

by phiyuku - 2009-09-03 18:16:18
Yeah

or else EA is going to cry like a little baby and go on a temper tantrum and threaten to not make games for the PS3.

by Spawnx777x - 2009-09-03 18:30:00
.

AT LEAST I DONT HAVE TO PAY TO GO ONLINE!

by eromack718 - 2009-09-03 19:09:18
your wright buttt

yeah but what i mean is that they can both have similar features without being exactly the same thats what i meant by a simple update. plus sony has an open network where i can get my themes from for free and my unreal tournament maps for free plus wallpapers exct.... things u could never do on live but i still like xbox live im just sayin i never thought ill see achievements on ps3 and with a simple update i have trophies!!!who knows what else could come??

by Stealth! - 2009-09-03 19:29:32
tbh

I never cared for the extra features XBL had when you pay 4 dollars a month. Like Cross Game Chat and *****. Sure it's nice, but when I'm playing games online, I want to be focused at what i'm doing especially when it involves obtaining trophies. Do not want distractions.

by SolBoricua - 2009-09-03 19:34:31
psn rocks

its free, its simple and dont have stupid avatars that dont resemble me.Some dude said before u get for what u pay im getting mine 4 what i paid 4 keep doing your ***** sony!!

360 has FF11, MMO's are not a problem. He is not talking about online play, how PSN works in general. You do not have the same alias across all games. On 360 if your user name to log into XBL is "whatever" than it automatically assigns you that name in whatever game you play online. This guy is talking about how lots of games you need to create a new persona for each game. The worst/best example of this is Konami and metal gear online. Where it reads nothing from PSN and you have to create a seperate Konami ID to play and also have seperate billing information from PSN for buying DLC......which is just stupid. As far as straighup going online to play a multiplayer game, there is really no difference between PSN and XBL.....the matchmaking is the same, and actually PSN has more dedicated servers, where XBL uses someone in the game as a host, which can be good or really bad....

by Shatterdome - 2009-09-03 19:57:16
...

I agree with hush. When it comes to playing a "quickmatch" or "custom match" game, PSN and XBL are identical. It's the level of intergration as well as 360 being stupid proof. Beyond cross-game voice chat and universal customizable soundtracks....PSN and XBL do the same things. It's just on PSN it takes a little more effort to do what you want, whereas XBL makes it easier by putting options to do almost everything, no matter where you are within the dashboard....

And at least you didn't have to use CAPS to make people notice your (obviously) retarded comment!

by TheDude - 2009-09-03 21:06:41
@shatterdome

"This guy is talking about how lots of games you need to create a new persona for each game." Please name another game beside MGS4 because as far as I'm aware that is the only game you have to do that in and I've been playing online games on ps3 ever since launch. So yes the ps3 does have a unified sign in id for all games besides MGS4 online.

by CloudX - 2009-09-03 21:35:21
LMAO

yo you guys need to calm down, i only own a ps3, AND if you people think "oh! it free" excuse then your a dumb $h!t, if someone offered you a tall glass of dead lizards for free would you accept? and the way the ps3 was built makes it damn bnear impossible for me to JUST TALK TO SOMEONE INGAME?! i smell b.s 256 players but i can't listen to my music awesome.. my problem is that the ps3 does a lot of crap that you don't need like 151365454 stores on my xmb. i love my ps3 to death but come on!

by ___ - 2009-09-03 23:42:58
@ Cloud Meh

"if someone offered you a tall glass of dead lizards for free would you accept?" Right because someone giving you a jar of dead lizards is the same. Terrible analogy. "256 players but i can't listen to my music awesome." We know that, thanks for bringing it up for the 100th time fan boy. "my problem is that the ps3 does a lot of crap that you don't need like 151365454 stores on my xmb" Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and frankly I like the new XMB look. If you don't, then that sucks for you and others will just not get so worked up over a *****in menu. Learn to count also you *****.

I think Sony is missing the point

Sony has come to the realization that gamers want their console to have more connectivity with not only the games they are playing, but with the people they are playing with. XBL has this system down, with a simple interface and many ways to connect with your friends. But even though Sony is trying to make amends by adding in the functionality that they lacked before, they're doing it completely wrong. They said that they're trying to centralize the experience AROUND THE PS STORE. Personally, I would much rather have my console be centralized around the games and the players. The PS Store shouldn't be the heart of the console. I didn't buy my PS3 because I wanted custom XMB themes or avatars, and I certainly didn't buy it because it has a highly-integrated store system. I bought it because I wanted to play good games. All those features are nice, but that's all that they are and all they should ever be: just features.

...

It's not just MGO that uses the stupid Konami ID system... All of the Konami games I've tried use it (even though that only + PES 2008, PES 2009 and MGO).

by kupomogli - 2009-09-04 11:26:07
@chevyjackson

I think you should message this about Microsoft then. Adding the Mii Too avatars with lightsabers, different clothing, etc. That crappy avatar taking a big portion of the new dashboard. Not only that, but the change they've made from the last dashboard to the new one. Their old dashboard was amazing. The new one is a piece of crap. I'd rather have the simple look they previously had rather than what they have now. Talk about being a *****ing hypocrite. Microsoft has been building everything around the XBL service from the start. Netflix, Twitter, dashboard themes to purchase, ADVERTISEMENTS IN THE DASHBOARD, etc. Sony isn't building their service around the store. They added the store to Game as well, but they're trying more to integrate stuff into the XMB to make services better.

EA games used to have you make an EA account as well, not sure if they still do. This happens on 360 as well but xbl fills the info in for you, I remember having to fill it out manually on PS3. Also what I am talking about is it may seem that PS3 is unified, but they are just making it look that way. Because in most online games you can make multiple guys or change your name....you can't on the majority of 360 games....if your XBL name is Shatterdome, that is your name in all games, no changing it. I have run across tons of people with different names in game and when added to friends I am like who the f is this.... Cloud.... There are plenty of games that support custom soundtracks while online. Wipeout, stardust HD and even LBP has good support custom soundtrack support. I don't care because I usually prefer the games music, especially in single player as the developers chose that particular music for that part of the game for a reason. Then I only play FPS online and you should be listening to the environment and your team, not music, unless you are a newb... Not to mention it's all up to the devs, so if you want MAG to have soundtracks, send them an email everyday. I also have not heard/read anything that says MAG will not have CS anyways....

by Shatterdome - 2009-09-04 15:32:13
Chaos0

Microsoft rarely uses it's own bandwidth and services for anything on XBL. Basically only for storing voice messages and hosting demos and other content. All servers for online games are picked from the best candidate among the players playing. Thats why in lots of games you get a pause when the host quits and it picks someone new. Voice data is not handled my MS, it is just another open channel between two+ xboxes and just uses yours and your friends internet....just like if you used some voice program on the PC to talk to them. MS just built that voice "application" into the dashboard as well as all the games. It is that having it built into the dashboard that lets them do the voice chat while you do anything on 360 thing.....and why that doesn't work durring xbox 1 games emulation, because the dash isn't loaded.

by dspidey7 - 2009-09-07 10:55:12
PSN works just fine!

what people need to remember is that Microsoft had a whole system life cycle with the original Xbox to get the online experience working, when they moved to the 360 they just built on what they already had and perfected it. Sony has only been doing the PSN for the last three years, and at the great job that they are doing, and it's free. If I'm paying 69 bucks for a game I sure as hell don't want to pay extra just to play online. Cross game chating? I mean really, I don't to talk to anyone unless they are playing the game that I'm playing and all online game that I've play thus far has in game chating. Who the hell is playing a game and wants to just make a call to anyone just to have an off topic conversation, cause lord knows if I'm playing Arkham Asylum I don't want to talk to no one while I'm kicking ass. Kudos to Microsoft for doing xbox live since the last generation. Kudos to Sony for coming out with a very capable experience their first time out.
