 PS3 in Australia to cost AU$ 999 - Image 1

The Australian launch of the PS3 is looming, and despite some free gifts being made available to (future) Aussie PS3-owners, Sony has been defending the Australian PS3 price tag which weighs in at a rather heavy AU$ 999 (US$ 788). The PS3 will be launched in Oz on March 23rd, but Australians still feel like they have the raw end of the deal since same console retails in the U.S. for just AU$ 640.

The big guns have responded to the commotion in the form of Sony's managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Michael Ephraim who brought it to the attention of the public and media that Australians will be paying the same price as those in Europe, where the console will be sold for €599 (AU$1000).

Ephraim explains this price tag by comparing the size of Australia/New Zealand and Europe with that of the U.S., saying that it is justified. He comments: "We have to realise that we live in a country with 22 million people, and the US supplies products to 300 million, which creates very different business dynamics." The U.S. does pay less than other countries for other products such as TVs and other electronics too, so higher prices are not PS3-exclusive.

All these factors need to be considered when buying an Aussie PS3, but remember, if you import a PS3 from another territory you will not be able to play Australian Blu-ray DVD movies - another main function of the PS3 besides gaming. Are higher prices in different territories justified? Voice your opinions in the comments!

» Yeah, right!

Sure, that's the reason. Europe is as big as Austrialia. Don't know what they are smok'in down there, but I'd guess the EU with about 350MM people is a big bigger. If that would be true, it should even cost less then Eur. 599 (which BTW includes VAT,)

Holy *****!!! The Inquirer said that? I'm going to run the store right now and sell my PS3 and buy a 360.

***** Microsoft and ***** the person who thought that the Japanese aren't still the best video game makers.

» Inquirer is biased

It always has been. See they will get more people to read their article if they insult peoples likes. It's like Rush Limbaugh, sure he is gay and all, but the reason people listen to him is because he says controversial things. Him and Howard Stern should get together and write for the inquirer (take that inquirer you only get lower case). I own a PS3 and I am a happy PS3 owner. No I didn't get ripped off, you know how I know? I HAVE NO BUYERS REMORSE. Great system and I like the games so far too. Anyone who argues from one side of this topic is a moron. If you haven't personally compared the systems you have no place to talk. Most people that own all three have respect for each. All I need to do is get a 360 to round it out.

» Screw you sony Australia I don't buy your excuses

Just because we're smaller has nothing to do with the price, usualy things are cheaper in australia because they usually try to make the market as big as they can.

I can tell you I won't pay $999 I was definitely going to get a PS3 but now I say screw you. There will be other ways and alternative, but I can't say I'm really to concerned I can wait until the price drops.

Sony just better hope I don't change my mind in the meantime and get something else.

Yes I'm sure many ppl in Aus have too much money and will buy it anyway, but you can expect more of those poor sales articles.

Greed makes people do stupid things.
