Sony attempting to patent motion sensing technology |

Ó
You've probably heard the whole deal about Sony and its SIXAXIS controller. There is something silly behind the whole fiasco with the rumble feature of Immersion and the chuckles that ensued when they tried to explain their reasons behind adding motion sensing to their controller instead of the much-beloved rumbling goodness. Well, in an added bit of controller nuttiness, how about we take a look at a patent found by Gamers Reports. This patent application is for a remote input device for a game console. Part of the abstract puts it best, actually:
An input device providing users with a pointing capability includes a sender portion and a receiver portion. The sender portion is adapted to be manipulated by a user to specify a target point within a target area. The sender portion projects a light beam including a pattern on to the target area. A receiver portion includes one or more sensor units located in or near the target area.
It sounds a lot like how we'd describe Nintendo's Wiimote technology. The problem is, this is a Sony patent application.
Filed as patent application number 20060267935 in 2005, this is actually a different patent from the EyeToy patent mentioned in July. Specifically, the main thing you can note here is the mention of sensor units near the target area, which sounds a lot more like the Wii's sensor bar than the camera function of the Eyetoy. The basic description of the proposal also talks about using the sensor to determine the relative placement of the input device in reference to the sensor.
Now, it certainly sounds like some kind of Wiimote patent, but you can't really tell. If they start to design the approved patent's tech to look a lot like some flying mouse for PS3 play however, then you may want to go somewhere else to wave a magic wand.

Oh and now they are making different collor Wii's so we have to buy more systems.
Just let me know when Nintendo fans wake up.

Or are you telling me the PS3 is useless because it does exactly the same thing as the PS2, just looks better?

Anyone remember the Gameboy Pocket... which was quickly followed by the Gameboy Color leaving many people displeased.
Then there was the horrible gameboy micro which they got their diehard fans to buy then abandoned.
I didn't hop on the DS quickly because I wantted their nicer second one that I knew would come out, and now I own a DS Lite.
And if you say a PS2 can do everything a PS3 can with nicer graphics, you haven't heard anything about PS3 then (or just don't want to hear it).

It's just a more powerful computer.

Blasphomy! I can get a ps2 for... (what... half?) of the price of the wii! with stellar games! and it's less buggy, AND you can't break the wrist strap on a ps2 because it is absent! ps2 FTW!

PS3 is more of a bigger leap from ps2, especially compared to the leap the 360 has on the original xbox. PS2 didnt have an online store, or even decent online play. Nor did it have as many multi-media capabilitys as the PS3 has (memory card slots as an example)
of course, getting you fanboys to take ur heads out your own butts is impossible, so none of you have an sort of intellect to discuss things properly

PS2 had Linux support, just not many people knew about it.
Sony is pushing BlueRay as the next DVD format. BlueRay is not for games...It can be used for games...but the PS3 is in competition with HD-DVD not the Xbox 360. This has been said before by one of their top execs.
The 360 is a great system with great games and the system is going to be competitive on price with the Wii next year.
Sony has a long uphill battle with required firmware updates to fix the many many issues related to backwards complatiable games, and no upscaling of PS1, PS2 or PS3 games to 1080P resolution, and Sixaxis bluetooth dropouts issues. They are also losing a lot exclusive titles to the 360. The Wii is taking over in Japan. The PSP sales are falling against the Ninteno DS.There's rumors that the PS3 is close to being hacked. They are having problems with production and can't produce enough units this holiday season. They have the worst launch game lineup of the 3 systems. They have delayed release in Australia & Europe until March 2007, and there is rumors it maybe be pushed back to April. And oh yeah, they have just had a change in management.
The future is a light dark right now.

Look at the eye toy, and the increased application available with the eye toy HD. Sony has had designs on this area of control for a long time, long before Nintendo announced the Wii controller.
No one 'copied' anyone, there all just trying to make the best (most proftiable/successful/popular, take you pick) console. So stop picking sides, site back and enjoy huge companies spending millions upon millions to give you something to waste you free time with.

Yes I bet sony gets a five year old to draw the diagrams for all their patent applications.
Also to those who don't understand the patent process: a patent APPLICATION is just that, an application. It does not mean they have ever been given the patent, it does not mean that they "invented it" before nintendo.
Also Nintendo are not a company likely to screw up thier patents before releasing a console based around this kind of innovation.
AND FINALLY to all those saying that nintendo copy sony, you might want to check your history:
Analogue stick = First seen on N64, copied by Sony
Rumble Feature = First seen on N64, copied by Sony
Digital Pad = First seen on NES, copied by EVEREYBODY

Oh, lastly, it's not fake, it's patent, Companies can't just drawn up a quick diagram anytime they want and say "look we so did this!", it's drawn up and sent in with a timestamp so there's no bickering over who did what first.

Anyone remeber the launch of the PS2? They had tekken tag and Madden, with no hope of games coming out to justify the purchase. What happend a year later? Games just kept coming out, Sony delivered on their promises, and then won the generation.
I don't think there is any company that would just give up and let their product fail! PS3 is very important to them and they've spent billions of dollars to develop it, sso I'm sure the money wasn't for nothing.
All I'm saying is to give them a chance, at least for a year, and see if there is anything worth getting. If it sucks, then you can start you flamming.

Also those problems you listed-
backwards compatible games - 200 out of 8000 still beats the list of games 360 has backwards compatibility with.
Sony is still holding onto its big exclusives, and its not really losing more so just a tie since it's gone from PS3 only to PS3 and 360.
Wii and PS3 are taking over Japan both will be prominent in the country I can assure you.
Upscaling will be on the way it has already been mentioned. Right now everything looks fine to me from what I've been playing.
Wii is close to being hacked too. 360 is hacked (atleast we haven't heard news of bricked PS3s unlike the 360 though). Everything will get hacked in one way or another this is not news.
With the bluetooth drop out all I know is I don't suffer this problem possibly because I recharge my controllers between playing (people think if you have it connected before you play it doesn't happen and that seems to be the case with mine but I can't be certain)
DS is beating PSP duh. The PSP isn't dead though and it's thriving just fine and having plenty of nice games coming out for it.
The rest of what you say is just speculation and rumors none of which can be proved.
Also I'd say 360 will hold at it's current price next year seeing as with Halo 3 coming out they know people will buy the system for that game. So why lower the price when you know you will be having many more unit sales coming them.
Sony will once again come out on top because a year from now they will have amazing games in lots of different genres (like the PS2). While 360 will pull out more and more shooters (like the xbox which will keep shooter fans only happy).
The future isn't what's light dark it's the present, and it's always darkest before the dawn.

none of the current hardware makers were first, which means they all copied the idea of making a home game system. let's call them all unoriginal and refuse to buy what they are selling.
it's not who came first, it's who does it best.
for this round i call nintendo. the fact nintendo designed around motion sensing, and sony included it as a feature will make all the difference in how games take advantage of it. how are you going to hold the sixaxis for bowling, and will it feel natural?
everyone can hang onto their allegiances all they want, however in the end you are the one that suffers for it.
on a side note i find it funny now that the ps3 is out fanboys can admit exactly how much better the xbox was than the ps2... it's all good, it's all in fun, now get in the pit and try to love some one.

We all know $ony copied Nintendo. Why defend $ony?

Also, the patent system is rediculous anyways, people draw up random things and patent them with NO intention of ever producing a product, then sue the pants off big compaaies who have the power to release the product. Buncha asshats IMO.
