Sony assures 10-year commitment to PS3

Despite the fact that Sony's game unit lost some US$ 455 million during the last holidays on its PlayStation 3 game console, the Japanese firm remains undaunted, renewing vows that it'll stick to its flagship product for the next decade or so.

Jack Tretton gave the company's followers some assurance by saying "we didn't get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007 Â— we're into this for the next 10 years and beyond." When asked what his take was on the lead taken by Microsoft with its Xbox 360 and Nintendo with its Wii, Tretton replied "a million units one way or another at this point isn't going to worry us."

Analyst Billy Pidgeon agrees. He believes that the advanced design of the PS3 will be a key market factor in the long run. He says that the reason the Xbox 360 and the Wii are ahead at this point is because the two consoles were designed for sudden impact, while the PS3 is a more long-term platform. He expects Sony's console to really come on in 2008.

Sony executives say they're not worried about the slow start that the high-end PS3 is experiencing. Even if they spent a billion dollars developing it and lost US$455 million in the last holidays alone with market activities, they say they've been through this with the PlayStation 2 and are confident that eventually, things will all fall into place.

Evidently, the stakes are much higher now with the company's "Sony United" vision that seeks that the multimedia, internet and entertainment wings of the company all jell and interact. This means that the company's Blu-ray technology must beat rival HD-DVD to concretize the vision. Positive signs are flashing for the Blu-ray with a 700 percent increase in disc sales thanks in large part to the PS3's proliferation.

If Sony wants to start blooming late, convincing users to buy the machine is the first step. The company says that its target market are people who owned a PS2 and who can afford the steep cost of the PS3. So far, it hasn't exactly gone great as the projected audience asks for more quality games that will compel them to jump in.

Umm xbots are not market analysists, they don't know how the market works. The market for gaming console is a long term thing (6-10+years) due to the amount of money it costs to develop a console. If microsoft is smart, they'll release a new console right now but they cant, why? because it'd cost them a load of money and they dont even profit anything from the 360 yet.

Sony is a smart company, they invest into something they know they wont profit instantly, but they know it'll be a future standard( HD as future standard), and as the next generation of dvd's come (dvd's wont last forever even if it is good enough, nothing will last forever), the blu-rya or HD-DVD will take over the market, as VHS has before. This time blu-ray seems to have the more current advantage, but this would change very fast if no good titles for the blu-rya section comes out. (although with all the companies supporting it...kinda hard), of course blu-ray is not a standard now and implimenting it into the ps3 jumps the price 300$, but the blu-ray will be an important factor next year , when the blu-ray and hd-dvd players start heading to wal-mart with the prices of 400$ and less. When standalone players go lower than 600$ , the ps3 's price will go lower than 600$. If the ps3 can match the price of a stand alone, people will see the true value of the ps3. But right now, stand alones are 1000$ and the ps3 is pretty exspensive too, therefore not having a very heavy market penetration.

The PS3 seems like a superb machine to me but the price right now is the only reason why i wont buy it now.. Maybe its because im getting older and i dont put all my money on one thing ( like games ).

Rent, car and gasoline , insurance , travel , electricity and phone ... the lists goes on .

I Hope sony stops realises soon that they'll have to wake up and lower the price to make the profit back with games , blu-ray movies and advertising on Home ...

Nothing to worry about at all, there well be plenty of good games to keep you busy by the end of this year.

I've always know that the PS3 is going to have a longer lifecycle. Firstly they're still supporting the PS2, which is on it's 9th year now. Secondly the fact that people keep on complaining that the PS3 is hard to program for, which it most definitely is due to the revolutionary architecture.

Hard to program for just means, more potential

To be honest I'm surprised to see the PS3 overtaking the 360 so early in it's life, I thought it would take till 2010.

you can hold off on buying cause it's top of the line equipment... you can buy next year and the PS3 will still be a hot item with more pull cause of the games and features that aren't available now...

but with the XBox 360... it's already old...

who knows what kind of XBox will be in the market by 2008.

I'm a university student so I don't have a ton of cash and had to prioritize...$400 was not alot for 360, over a year ago...i'll get PS3 when it's also 350-400....when that is, hard to say...but some games will be out by then i'm sure...

Also, I don't want my console to last 10 years, I am fine buying a new one every 4-5 years...it's been like that since nintendo, if not before...

...Really a silly Xboxite arguement. PS3 has some noteworthy exclusives (Resistance, Motorstorm, Tekken) within the first few months of release. It also has a good and growing selection of games also previously released, or simultaneously released on 360. So, the arguement that there are "no good games" on PS3 must ALSO at the same time imply that there are "no good games on 360", either. Because, if a growing portion of titles exist on BOTH systems, then you can't say that Xbox games are ALL great and PS3 games suck. And, even after a 18 months, there's only Gears of War and Lost Planet as good exclusives. I have both systems and already dumped Dead Rising (whose demo plays great, but the actual game is tremendously disappointing), and am in no hurry to get Gears or Lost. Test Drive is great but has lost its luster. Meanwhile, I'm lovin' my selection of 10+ PS3 games. Not to also mention that I can watch HiDef Blu-Ray movies, too.

I don't know why everyone complains about the price of the ps3 , its not really a lot.

First of all its called saving up its not that hard, second there is things called credit cards thats how I got mine. And if you work getting a ps3 is not that hard. Third if im going to spend over 300 dollars on something im going to use a long time might as well spend it right the first time and not need to buy another one.(XBOX 360 Elite)

Go read the news most Japanese companys are not even going to develope for the PS3 they are going for the Wii. WTF has this got to do with 360?, And the joker who thinks 2.5 million PS3s is a larger amount than 12 million 360s needs to get an education.

10 years is a very long time. can you imagine gaming computers in 10 years, wow! how much better would games on the pc look and how much would a gaming pc in 10 years cost! ouch.

sony will be selling the ps3 even if the world has spun around the sun 10 times. but a 10 yearlife cycle doesn't mean a new playstation will be out in 10 years.

a new playstation4? will be out in 5-6 years after the ps3? but even with the new playstation (if there is one) there will still be support for the ps3, proven with the ps2.

Can you imagine the PS1 being sold with new games in 2005, or the PS2 being sold with newly developed games in 2010? They had long life cycles, but sony added a few years that just didn't happen. Sony is promising to its userbase that their recently acquired PS3 will be supported at least for ten years. That can means upgrades of hardware and software (keeping the system compatible), new PSN titles, new retail titles. If you want the proof look at God of War II, awesome game at very late PS2 lifespan, others games are in the way, meanwhile xbox1 and GC are truly DEAD. In four years PS3 development cost will be much smaller than now and devels will be used to the arch, that guarantee a constant stream of titles for many years as happens with PS2.

BTW, what comeback? BR are dominating the market with new titles every week.

Ok just do something for me please... I want you just to imagine something (this is only between the ps3 and 360). I want you to imagine a solid wall, with lots and lots of crystal water behind it, and nothing but dryness and dirt in front of it. Now imagine a crumbling wall, with the water slowly dribbling out, and it only has half the water of the solid wall.

Now replace the water with good press, replace the solid wall with the ps3 and the crumbling wall with the 360.

The 360 does get a lot of good press here and there at the moment, but not all at once. Whereas the PS3 gets minimal good press. Now once the end of this year has pasted the 360 will have run out of its 'water' supply, whereas the PS3 has all of its stored up. And if timed right the PS3 could release all this good press in one blow and that would be more effective than good press here and there. Would you agree?

Now all this good press comes from: Future Games 2007 (Getaway, Final Fantasy, GTA IV, PES 6, Resistance, Motorstorm, eye of judgement, Warhawk ect), Playstation Home, Price Cut and more. And all of these seem to come out at the same time.

Now if sony pull this one right and release all this on time then the ps3 will make such an impact and release all its 'water' at once it will seem overwheming and ausome.

What im trying to say is bascially the 360 may get good press but the ps3 has a lot stored up for the end of 2007, and this good press will be what sells it.

ok. jsut to start off i have an xbox 360. two in fact. one at moms and one at dads. and all of my best friends have a ps3 and a 360. so heres what im sick of:

A) to damonous third post from the top, u r retarded. i dont know if you have just seen screenshots or maybe played a demo of a game that you THOUGHT was good. ive played resistance and motorstorm. first, resistance is a good game, and the story has depth, but its too repetitive. run shoot. pick up a bottle and gain health. motorstorm is a solid game, but its not as innovative as it should be on a system with a motion sense controller. and tekken? correct me if im wrong but its not even out yet so how would u know that its gonna be an amazing super hit PS3 exclusive. remember that not everyone has a ps3 where as EVERYONE has a ps2. the sales of tekken 6 will be relative to the number of ps3 that are sold. god ur *****in retarded...

B) to the guy who is named ??? who made the ocmment about credit cards and saving up. ur retarded too. first off a credit card has something called intrest so u dont actually end up paying whoever owns your credit card back exactly $600. second, ur absolutely right a ps3 is not that expensive. i could get one if i wanted to. its all about people priority. who should u give a ***** if someone else cant buy it. hop off thier case.

C) the comments about the bluray and hddvd battles are all repetitive and very similar. someone made a comment about bluray players being $1000. so are hddvd players. they are both basically the same thing just different formats. like a cd and a jumpdrive. do the exact same thing. look different. it depends upon what the american consumer wants to look at bluray or hddvd. and bluray has a boost because of the ps3

the 7 spu's of a ps3 give it so much depth and flexibility, i love it.

+/ i would never waste my money onm a 360. its just going to break in a few months anyways and all the games suck and alot of the games that are also on ps2, the graphics are better on ps2...wierd huh? i would rather have a ps2 than a 360 any day, i would even trade a 360 for a ps2, all the best games are on ps2, graphics arent what i aim for. i still play MGS1 and FFVII-VIII all the time for psone on my ps3.

my ps3 was recently stolen from my house, and i will buy another one b4 i ever think about getting a 3-$hitty. im going to buy another one soon, but still keep my eyes and ears open for who took my other one so that i can have them arrested and retrieve my memory off my HDD.

I find it shocking that people always bring up which console is better especially when it comes to playing games. it seems to me that the 360 must be better because what you're really paying for in the ps3 is the blue ray player not the pure processing and raw ram of the product. so if your spending 600 on the ps3 to play games, understand you're buying a 300-400 dollar game machine. thats also not considering the extra 100 or so that is going toward having all those nifty connections. and so thats the quality you should expect from the ps3 when playi
