Sony has announced a new SCEA-backed extended warranty plan for PS3 and PSP owners in the US that gives extra coverage for up to two years after the original manufacturer's warranty expires.
Those whose devices are still within the one-year manufacturer's warranty can choose from the following extended warranty plans:
- PS3 – 1-year extension (US$ 44.99) or 2-year extension (US$ 59.99)
- PSP – 1-year extension (US$ 29.99) or 2-year extension (US$ 39.99)
- PSP Accidental Damage – 1-year (US$ 39.99) or 2-year (US$ 49.99)
The Accidental Damage plan for PSP covers cracked-screen damage if you happen to drop your PSP unexpectedly. It's only available for purchase within the first 30 days of owning a PSP, however.
The prices outlined above includes all shipping charges and repairs. All three plans will become available starting this month.

So what the above link is saying that if you get dust in your system from the environment, you are not covered. But in order to keep the unit cool, you have to give it ventilation. Maybe some people will close it up to prevent the normal occurring dust accumulation to happen which will again in turn, overheat and damage the system. What is up with Sony not giving a standard 3 year warranty anyhow? What is wrong with doing that? They don’t trust their product?

Glad to see Sony taking initiative to keep their customers happy and at a decent price too.

Anyway, the way to solve YLOD is to use a vacuum oven after cleaning the S*@% out of your PS3. Put the circuit board into the vacuum oven to remelt the solder and fix the broken connections. Don't put the hard drive or blu ray in. I have heard people baking the circuit in a normal oven and it works, but I'd be careful.
Best thing to do is to avoid YLOD completely- After your warranty has long gone, open the case and clean out the dust every so often. I'm hoping the blue diode doesn't wear out though, because that would require changing the disc reader.

if you want extended coverage by the extended warranty and get the extra one or two years to cover everything that could be faulty instead of only one thing

Given that both my PS3 & PSP went down within a fortnight of each other last month. Having said that, the PSP was my own fault (dropped out of a bag). Guess I might go fish it out of the bin before it gets taken and see if I can salvage something from it given the comments above (as the screen's gone).
I imagine that Sony have waited until now, as it's at or approaching a year since when the slim became available, meaning that few are likely to have purchased a phat (particularilty older models) in the last year.
God forbid they introduce an extended warranty on a product with KNOWN ISSUES that are becoming more and more prevalent (though still not RRoD proportions).
If extended warranty was available for my phat, I would have purchased it even if it only covered me for another 6-12 months. (Laser Died)

As for my PS3 lol.. my PS2 is hella old and it still works. I doubt I'll need it for my PS3.

But why wait til the Slim comes out?
By the time these actually gets rolled out the Slim with teh new RSX chip will be out so the failure rate of those Slims will be minuscule. So they will just make alot more money than they use.
I supposed what i meant to say was..
Why wait until your hardware is the LEAST likely to fail to bring this out? Its a pretty big "The Phats were too prone to failure" sort of thing if you ask me..
Still its good it is finally coming
