Sony Clarifies Surprising '17 Million PSN Users' Statv - Image 1

When Sony reported that they have a total of 17 million users on the PlayStation Network, some of you may have went all buh?, considering that Microsoft tossed out the same number of registered users for Xbox Live.

Turns out that there were some things Sony forgot to mention on how they arrived at that number. MTV got out their magnifying glasses, detective caps, and bubble pipes to figure it out. Then they got Sony on the line and asked them what's up. Here's what they got:

The PSN numbers (17M and 2.1M) include people who have created accounts on PS3, the Web site and PSP.

Note that since the implementation of single sign-on, PSN ID and PlayStation Underground IDs (which were often created at the same time when first making a PSN ID) were automatically merged and rolled over.

Additionally, since PSN is a free online gaming service, some households create multiple IDs so that a father can keep a separate list of friends, trophies and stats from that of his daughter for example.

So. There you go. Find whatever satisfaction you can get from that, just don't spread the fanboy hate around, mmkay? Hate is baaaad, mmkay?

Thanks to Fujin for the tip!

Then again thinking on it microsoft will almost certainly do the same thing. I have a live account but dont even have and xbox.

also you can get live for free as well so what the big deal?

» umm

Is that so shocking? Honestly. Including multiple users per console and other registered devices is not bat at all! They have the users why not show it? Why should the be scrutinized for having a multiple system/function online system!?

by NarooN - 2009-01-15 12:24
» wow, really?

People make multiple accounts on their 360s too, so did they really think any different? Fanboys...ugh...

by FlagBearer - 2009-01-15 13:19
» Hypocrite.

Yeah, but only one per household makes sense, since it costs $50 per year for each gamertag, not household. Most people have one online account, but maybe several offline accounts so each persons gamerscore grows according to their own skill. Only the online account would register on Microsoft's counters.

» First off...

Yay me! Besides that its fair game... the bottom line is, that's how many PSN users they have... Wish there were a way track how many of those signed up through the actual PS3 itself

by NarooN - 2009-01-15 18:48
» fail.

to see how I'm a hypocrite. My brother has a 360 which I play regularly, so if I'm a fanboy, then I'd love to know what constitutes not being one.

» Exactlly...

Anyone with half a brain knew that Sony was including multiple accounts on one PS3. As yxxxx said, you can bet that MS is doing the same thing, as silver accounts are free to create and technically count as a member of xbl.

Maybe no one questions MS's numbers because they have sold more. I just beleive that people buying PS3's are more technically litereate and the ratio of PS3 owners having highspeed is higher than the cheap ass people that buy 360's (especially arcade units).

» Flagbearer...

Ya, you are wrong...

You can go online with an XBL silver account, download free demos, trailers and have a gamerscore which registers on the XBL homepage....without paying....

The only difference is, you can't play multiplayer games....and some demos come later to silver account than gold ones...

Silver and Gold are both online, and would both register on Microsofts "counters"

by Master Chef - 2009-01-15 20:22
» Of course

Both are going to count multiple accounts on the same console.

Does anyone know if MS releases Gold member only stats? I don't really care about the amount of Silver members, seeing as how they're not truly a part of XBL since they can't play multiplayer

by Djhg2000 - 2009-01-16 03:02
» Well duh...

Actually that's completely fair.

Sony has a portable console too unlike Microsoft, and not even every PSP owner sign up for PSN.

Microsoft missed the oppertunity to step into the world of handheild gaming, their loss.

» Again doesnt have to be PS3

I had a PSP before my PS3, which I registered on the PSN. When I got my PS3, it said my e-mail was already registered, and I was given the same gamer tag as that of the PSP, so I technically didn%u2019t register my account on the PS3, but I have do have one I use a lot.
