Sony Rep: 40 GB PS3 backwards compatible with PS1 games - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson Nick Sharples has given word that the 40 GB PlayStation 3 slated for an October 9 launch will still be compatible with PlayStation 1 titles. While that will make most players very happy, some have been asking for the reasons behind the lack of PS2 backwards compatibility in the new console.

Sharples stressed that Sony has always focused on "developing innovative new features and services for the PS3 and not backward compatibility." If that's the case, where does this leave players who do want backward compatibility to play their legacy games? The SCEE representative answered that question in his following statement:

For those who consider backwards compatibility important, the 60GB Starter Pack with extra SIXAXIS controller, two first party titles and extensive backwards compatibility remains available until stocks run out. With a 100 Euro price reduction from 10th October, this model is a real bargain.

While it's understandable that Sony has chosen not to include backward compatibility, it should be remembered that one of the biggest factors of the PlayStation 2's dominance in the console market was the fact that users could also play their PS1 games on it. Let's all wait and see how this move pans out for Sony.

STUPID

This has to be false. Why would Sony hurt themselves by doing that? People I know that are waiting for a price drop before they buy want this feature. To me personally this was one of the big sellers. Sony shouldn't do this. Thiis will only cause sales to slow as well as PS2 game sells to slow. I personally still buy PS2 games. There are a lot of great ones I have yet to play. I think other people feel the same way.

Bad Move

That was a nice feature... people bought the PS3 so they could replace their old PS2 as well. Now I think ppl will stick to their PS2 for a while... It's unfortunate because if it has this feature, I'm sure it would have sold well. Now they are just replacing consoles that aren't selling that well, with cheaper consoles that does not have the interesting features, and won't sell as much because of that.

hmm

This will play ps2 and ps1 games just the same as the 80 gig version does.It will use software to emulate the games.Since this software is already there it doesn't add to the cost of this machine and there would be no reason for Sony to leave it out. However they might be thinking that it would take up harddrive space and left it off so they could give users the choice to download it if they want it.Which would be fine but saying this will not play ps2 games is just like saying the 80 gig and euro models will not,and that would be untrue. They cut the cost by not putting the EE chip in and thats what this is about.

WTF ARE THEY THINKING?

Most gamers own a PS2 already

Whatever

You know, those who enjoy playstation already own one. buy the new system and keep the old. Thats what new consoles are all about. THE NEW. I bought the 60g fresh out in november. And the only game ive plyed from ps2 is god of war, and thats only cause i gave away my ps2. Now granted i have the chance to play ps2, right now all im worried about is the new. Soon ps3 owners will forget about ps2 games, granted they still are very good. Heavenly, Resistence, up and coming assassins creed will keep me well occupied. Sony need not worry about backwards compatibility. Its honestly for the most part useless. What did every one do when Nintendo didnt make Super B/C? NOthing. Why? Cause the concept wasnt out yet. Just keep your old machines.

wtfomgrofllolwatchamacallit

even though i dont really care about backwards compatibility (i still use my linux ps2) and i already have a launch ps3 20gb with complete compatibility, a lot of people will use this issue as a reason to stab the ps3. yes the SCEE statement is right for once, if you really wanna play ps2 and ps1 games why not just buy a cheap ps2. or if you already have a big library then do not get rid of your old system. i guess early adopters like me has an advantage after all. i bought my ps3 for only 425 dollars on nov 11 2006. anyways sony is also at fault because they have no valid reason to completely remove the ps2 compatibility on later ps3 models. they can easily emulate it on the hardware. the cell and rsx CAN emulate the ps2 if they wanted to. NO BUTS sony. how about making PS3 compatible with all PSP games? oh damn you cant even keep ps2 compatible, sorry me for wishful thinking! sniff sad

.

But what about upscaling and others features?! The PS2 simply does not look good on my HDTV.

Ugh....

They can't drop the price by much of anything by losing 20GB and the memory card slot. Something had to be done to make it cheaper, and if you remeber, more people own a PS2 than any console out there, not counting PC, and any PS fan's almost certain to have one, and I'll bet it's still the most played console out there too. This SKU is for cheap bastards; I doubt anyone on this site about next-gen gaming is one of those, as many of us got our 360/Wii/PS3 near launch, or as soon as we could find them.

Yep

dont sell your old tv it looked fine on your old tv. Just wait awhile i honestly think GoW looks like crap upscaled onto my hdtv. But hey maybe they will incorporate the tech later. let them focus on makeing ps3 the best it can be. No one comlained so much when they were breaking limits on ps2. Just have patience. The complaining is unnessecary. If you need to complain about everything, take a cyanide pill and save us all the hassle of having to scroll past your pointless posts.

I'm what common sense is really about

The supposed "upscaling" of PS2 games looks like crap even on my HDTV. Slightly better, but all it does is make the jagged edges blurry. But still, I like being able to play flawless PS2 games on my PS3 even though I leave the PS2 hooked up next to it. I don't think sony is really saving much by totally removing backward compatibility. I think it's a bad move. They're also breaking a promise they made around the time the PS3 launched.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-10-08 08:55:28
uh, no

The early US and Japanese 60 and 20GB models have the combination EE + GS chip from the PS2 slim, so they essentially have a PS2 inside them for full hardware PS2 compatibility. The later European and US 80GB models have the Emotion Engine removed, leaving only the Graphics chip from the PS2 and the PS1 CPU (used as the sound chip in the PS2) inside, so the Emotion Engine is emulated. That's how Sony got so many games to work in such a short time. There is still PS2 hardware inside, just not the Emotion Engine. The 40GB model will apparently have only the PS1 processor inside, probably so you can still play downloaded PS1 games from the Playstation Store! No PS2 games will work so give it up! Only Microsoft was willing to work to get games working completely with emulation.
