Sony: 3D Blu-ray PS3 update coming in September, YouTube 3D support in the coming months |

Sony has confirmed that they will release the much awaited PS3 firmware update that will allow you to play 3D Blu-ray discs this September. According to Mick Hocking, senior director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the company is also gearing up for another update that will add 3D photos and YouTube 3D support on the console:
"In September this year, we're launching another Firmware upgrade - and this one is going to upgrade the PS3 to support Blu-ray movies in 3D. Again, you won't have to do anything - just connect your PS3. For the film market that's a very significant event."
"Then later in the year - we're not going to date it yet - the PS3 is going to support 3D photos. Of course the popularity of 3D isn't just going to come from movies and games. There's 3D cameras on the market, there's 3D camcorders coming on the market in the next 12 months as well, and 3D broadcasts."
"Crucially for us, PlayStation 3 will be able to store all types of 3D content. And we can do this through properly upgrading the Firmware on the platform. So you'll see 3D games in the next 12 months, you'll see Blu-ray movies in 3D, and as soon as the broadcasts start through our PlayTV services, you're going to watch 3D content [via that]."
"YouTube will be supporting 3D content over the next 12 months as well - and you'll be able to watch that on the PlayStation 3. And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies, you can play those back on PS3, too. It's a great purchase proposition and future proof."

trouble is, its low res, looks a bit poo.
@flamesbladeflc l- probably not, the ps3s 3d is stereoscopic, 2 pictures side by side, the tv displays each picture full screen 120 times a second and with the shutter glasses gives u 3d.
the 3DSs 3d works with headtracking. nintendo will want u 2 view the 3dpics on the 3ds so it wont be stereoscopic. unless they made a converter ,which i doudt.

you positive about the 3ds
Thats was how i initially thought the 3ds was being done
however, its using a parallax barrier
a similar tech is being used in cars, to allow viewers to watch tv, while the driver can see the sat nav

2. Each image is displayed at 60Hz for a total of 120hz. Frames per second has nothing to do with it. By that logic a 60hz TV set would require 60fps??? At any rate, what you said would total 240 images per second (each picture 120 times, so 2X120).....not gonna happen. Not yet anyway. And when we do, you won't need 240Hz TVs.
60 cycles per second has absolutely nothing to do with any amount of images displayed on the screen per second.

1. ur right apparently it works like this:

2. each stereoscopic picture is @2x60 fps (=120fps)each picture from the stereoscopic image is runnin @60 fps i meant.
ps3 games can run @120 fps http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/super-stardust-3d-720p120-confirmed-article

"720p120" That's horrible. I'd rather have slower 1080p.
There is no 'set' fps on this technology. I think you are used to consoles giving you round numbers. I would also take that stardust article with a grain of salt. Especially since the only constant factor so far is 'Hz' which just so happens to be 60/120. I can see where a media sight would incorrectly states misleading information.

The principle is that for every single static 3D image you want to show someone, you need to show the brain 2 images.
So you could have a 3D movie/game at 15fps, which would require 30fps as it has to display each image twice.....of course the quality would be crap.
I think the 120/240hz minimum is just a standard that Sony/other companies are striving for.....so that it will be possible to have 60fps 3D that can be played on any 3D TV which would be at least 120hz....

60Hz is the MINIMUM a display can run at before it looks like shit (scan lines, artifacts). Therefore 120Hz is the MINIMUM for 3D. It's not just some shot in the dark number they all decided to fall upon.
Either way 60fps and 120fps has NOTHING TO DO with Hz rating.
The link you provided says nothing about 3D REQUIRING 60fps per eye.
As I already explained, my 3D setup can display as many fps as my hardware can handle. It's usually around 30-40fps. For a total of 60-80fps.

As the Hz rating (when applied to TV's and monitors) is how many times a display can refresh it's picture in a second. So essentialy Hz and FPS are the same....

If you run a game at 30fps, your TV is still running at 60Hz. When you run a game at 15fps your TV is still running at 60Hz. When you run a game at 112fps your TV is still running at 60Hz.
Same with 3D. If your TV is 120Hz in 3D mode then I don't care if you are running 2fps to 50,000fps your TV will still run at 120Hz.
FPS HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH HZ.
If you hit PAUSE you are running 1fps. But you still see 60 cyles per second on your TV.
FRAMES PER SECOND DOES NOT EQUAL CYCLES PER SECOND.
The TV doesn't give a rats ass what it's fed. It will continue to display it's proper cycles per second.
Guess what? If you give your TV NO VIDEO SIGNAL it will continue to display 60/120Hz.
Guess what? Most video frame rates are 29.97. They aren't even 30.
3D requires AT LEAST 120Hz, no matter what. The movies DO NOT need to be 60fps. They can be anything they want. But regardless of what you feed your TV it will continue to run at 120 cycles per second.

Also if you want to get technical, yeah they are the same.
fps = frames per second
hertz = cycles per second
When one frame of a game is displayed it has done one cycle.
So you could easly say a game runs at 60hz as well as 60fps.
Fps is just the more popular and accepted term. Mostly because HZ is usually used to describe physical electrical systems (tv's, processors, ram, electrical current in wires, etc)
Also, you can produce a stereoscopic 3D effect with a still image....you never seen those in the news paper ?
120hz for 3D is a just a standard that has been decided on. Much like the NTSC standard of 29.97 (yeah I did know that btw) Yet you can watch TV fine at 15 fps, just not at the same level of quality.

Now THAT is correct.
"Also if you want to get technical, yeah they are the same."
No, they are NOT.
See the word frame? See the word cycle? TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. If you had to have at least 1 frame per cycle then explain to me how a 60Hz monitor can display 13fps.
What you do not understand is that the SOURCE is what dictates how many FRAMES per second the video is displaying. The monitor takes that information, CONVERTS IT and dishes out the video in cycles per second.
Two cycles CAN CONTAIN the SAME FRAME if they are not synced up properly. Therefor your source of 13fps will get multiplied out to sync up with the monitor. Or, frames can be dropped.
So you can NOT claim the SOURCE fps is what is getting displayed on your TV.
Again, TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
And in addition to that, you DO NOT NEED 60/120fps for 3D. You can get 3D with as little as 2fps.
The only reason you can match 60fps with a 60Hz monitor is because CONSOLES lock themselves in at a specific fps. Not many devices do that.

hdmi 1.4 = crisp pic ,hdmi 1.3 = foreground blurry
plus my set can do 3d @1080p.
sony/samsung 3d tvs cant.
i reckon the ps3s 3d movies/games will be 720p max and with ps3s using hmdi 1.3 its not looking good!
