Sony: 3-D support for ALL PS3 games not sure yet

Wipeout in 3D - Image 1

Hold up! Before you scramble for a new TV to support the reported PlayStation 3 3-D function, you gotta hear this out. If you'll remember, the report said that all PS3 games will run in 3-D with a software update by next year. Sony, on the other hand, says that they're not even sure yet if that's even possible.

For now, they're "conducting a technological investigation" to see if they can even pull off that amazing stunt. Imagine, ALL PS3 games in 3-D. In fact, Sony said, "there is no plan for the market launch of this at this time."

Thanks to Train04 for the tip!

Wouldn't the games have to be coded with this in mind first?

if it only requires some kind of post-processing technique... but I'm just speculating

3-D isn't something that you can do with post-processing. It's two different pictures rendered at slightly different angles.

This would be impossible for the PS3 to do for older games seeing as it would have to render the video output twice. (Only games that were optimized for this would work).

No way you can display depth unless the program is designed to figure it out and let the device know.

Let's all just hope for the best. I will replay all of my games that I haven't sold yet, if they actually make it so that every game can be played in 3D.

it'd be easy with an update.

i can play N64 in 3D on my computer with a simple driver. It's really possible for all games to be in 3d.

it'd take some tinkering so that it can figure out what depth to set each game, but it's possible.

Shoot, can't find the driver link, but when and if i do, i'll post.

If i can run any game in 3D on my cpu, i think the ps3 easily could.

yep, you install the driver, set it up a bit and any game/exe can be in 3D. it's pretty neat. i mean, you gotta have the glasses of course but i think they got cross-eye now...idk.

i don't use it much anymore, i'm kind of done pc gaming

I quote, " XBOX360 IS A PIECE OF SHYT SYSTEM THAT IS BEING IMPROVED EVEN THOUGH IT'S SHYT", what...? "PS3 IS A WASTE OF $400/$500", this is Q4 2009 buddy, the ps3 is only $300.

And dude I guess I'm a Sony fanboy but even I'll acknowledge that the 360 isn't that bad. Even right now it's still more popular than the PS3.

hahaha, i had to rate that boner dude up, that made me laugh, not the loud message of idiocracy, but the fact that he disses on both PS3 and xbox is what makes me laugh. If he isnt a fan boy of those two, then he must be a nintendo wii fanboy, this is what happens when you play wii for days on end with your bedroom door shut and locked so noone can see you playing the wii with your rectal muscles.

in case you didn't understand i was using sarcasm and yes that was an insult.Remember if you decide to respond to turn off your caps lock, and use proper punctuation so you dont sound like a complete fool

as for the article,it really shouldn't be to hard to implement on the ps3 ive seen it done on a few pc games, its just a matter of compatibility i assume maybe different settings for different games, who knows

I would assume that just like what nvidia did with their 3d stuff (which you can get working with red/blue glasses), Sony could get it to work with just about any of their games. So could Microsoft or hell, even Nintendo.

Now, whether or not the PS3 could RUN most of the games in 3D is another question. Shifting to 3D mode on the computer halves your FPS. I would expect a similar thing to happen on the PS3.

Then again, you know what people say about assuming....

While I agree with most of what you said, seriously (and I don't mean to pick a fight), if you want somebody to use proper punctuation you generally at least use it yourself.

# Before making people buy new tvs...GUNBEHINDTHESUN 2009-09-07 05:35
They should make some kind of converter that hooks up between a PS3 and a tv. During the digital conversion here in the U.S., so many people already purchased tvs. Now if they make it where you have to have a new tv to take advantage of it, it would be hard to get the a lot of people to purchase a new 3D format tv to take advantage of the content. I think Sony needs to bring this to the consumer in some for even be it standard red/blue 3D and get people ready for the next gen of Playstation where Playstation 4 will be already planned to have it built in and by that time, many people will already have the newer format tv.

Wow, you guys are dumb as *****. Using that "simple driver", will take up a considerable amount of processing power to render two images. The PC can do this if you have enough juice, but PS3 games are already optimized for the system, leaving not enough processing power to do 3-D without a huge drop in frame rate. Sure a game that runs in 60FPS might be able to get a patch that lets it run 30FPS in 3D, but it would be on a case by case basis.

You guys don't get it, IT HAS TO RENDER THE SAME SCENE TWICE.

# WTF!?!?!?!?!ISOHaven 2009-09-09 05:42
The games ARE already coded for it. Sort of. FMV's aren't. Just the rendered stuff.

Take DirectX for example. I have a pair of shutter glasses that turn ALL DX games into 3D. Whether they were designed for it or not. All the "depth" data is already there.

I've read a few times that the PS3 SDK contains similar data.

# WTF!?!?!?!?!ISOHaven 2009-09-09 05:46
@relys - you are dead wrong. Displaying the same scene twice is not the same as RENDERING it twice. It renders once and phase shifts the same output. The depth data is already there, all it has to do is adjust what it renders.

Anyway, who's to say that's how they would do it?
