Solution to SIXAXIS woes: play Lair using USB control pads |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Factor 5, SIXAXIS, Sony
Ó
What was supposed to be among Sony's flame hot titles, Lair from Factor 5 has instead taken some heavy fire from critics and gamers alike. Being forced to play Lair using SIXAXIS control can spoil even the most epic dragon adventure. This has become one of the reasons why taking the video game for a spin can be unforgiving.Fortunately, a sneaky alternative allows players to use analog sticks or directional pads of USB controllers. Many sources (especially forum goers in NEOGAF) claim that they were able to hook up certain USB control pads to play Lair. Someone from Wired supposedly got his Sega Saturn USB to work. SIXAXIS-free control doesn't stray much from what the game intended as expected, but saves players from frustrating moments of having their dragon move where he shouldn't be.
Key buttons weren't mapped to the Saturn pad, but there haven't been any reports of problems with Logitech USB control pads. We are yet to confirm if it's possible to complete the game with these controllers. Updates as we get them, so watch this space!

apparently the gameplay bashing of reviewers cause of the controls were a little shortsighted since apprently they didn't have time to actually get used to the controls first and just got on to their job to finish the game and finish the review for publishing... he said the learning curve is quite steep but (just as in any other game) if you've already put enough time on it it's no problem at all.
so yeah.. i want to experience this game. i'll be getting it end of September.

10.0 on sound quality
7.9 on gameplay
9.0 on six axis controls
this game is easier to control than warhawk
i guess the guys that reviewed the game cant play video games the six axis is dead on and how else would you play this game i mean direction pad would not work.
i love the game , the only downfall of it is the gameplay is
lacking a little bit, you play the game by doing tasks
and some of them can get a little boring, but on the other hand some levels are amazing. best graphics i have seen yet , it is crazy how many things are going on at once.
ok and for the lowsy reviews it got.. sonic got like a 5.5 and that game was awful in every way. lair is beautiful and is fun. i mean unless these guys dont like playing different kinds of games like lair. maybe these people are close minded and only like fps games and racing and sports.
4.5 on score are you serious. best game out for ps3 hands down i mean you gave ghost recon 2 a good score and rainbow six and those games look and play like last gen games and the multiplayer is god awful.
so go buy this game and try it for your self if you
want somthing else to add to your game collection
besides mindless shooters and sports games!!!!
i give it an 8.5
had it since friday itches pre b

Get my point!!!!! QJ I hope you're reading this cause you're expose......We now know that you are bias against
anything Sony and I just wanted to let the rest of the readers know that this is a poor site to get accurate info on Sony PS3 or PSP without tossing in article that almost alway have negative remarks in it.
Get your facts straight!!!
You are reporting on a game not your sorry bias opinions,
Opinions are like ASS HOLES, big deal--everyone has one.
go and read the xbox stuff, they don't have any negative remarks in their articles, why only Sony hun.
Lair is a great game+beautiful graphics= an A in my book.
six axis is a great controller with motion sensing capabilities--heck it's the top notch for next Gen console controllers. I didn't hear a single good thing about it, so what are you trying to say hun.....what are you trying to tell us, that it has nothing good about it except for being a crappy controller.
Look at xbox360 their controller is nothing but an oversize plastic that basically mix a PS1 controler with a Game cube controller. Look at the basic controller shape and buttons=PS1. Look at where the D-pad and analog stick is located=Gamecube. Don't even try to tell me it's coincidental because given that it came out after the two systems controllers. And given M$ decietful history of copying others and claiming it their own all the way up to the future to the Windows Vista--Whichis nothing but a rip off of Mac OS X...here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK9-9hxNuvk
M$ is out of ideas and has nothing new all I see them do now is copy the competitors...xbox360 has just a copied controller and nothing new and next gen about their controller yet all they get is praise for not having anything original and needed as standards for the future(coughs--Blu-ray).
bottom line is I am tire of seeing so many bias articles on QJ, so PLEASE site administrators, PLEASE keep out whatever opinions your bias writers add as junk to the articles or stop posting such bias articles or your site will be just another one of those that posts nothing but trash.

Lair? The best game out for the PS3? And yet you only give it 8.5! So the best game on the PS3 is only worth 8.5 to you? Nothing is better than 8.5 on the PS3?
What you're saying seems to be inconsistant. It's as if you *want* to like Lair, rather than truly believing it's the best game on the PS3.

i use my DUAL SHOCK 2 connected to a ps2tousb adapter as a second controller and almost all games i have tried WORKS! pretty much the same just minus the rumble (does not function due to my adaptor) and tilt which is nonexistent on dual shock 2. i can pretty much use almost all of my ps1 and ps2 peripherals on ps3. beatmania controllers, arcade hori stick, gt driving force pro, eyetoy, wireless keyb, mouse, and yes even the pa*****o controller. talk about compatibility, it even beats my PC because windows requires drivers and the ps3 dont. booyah

and is the best game out.
there are no 9.0 or better games out yet
ask me when heavenly sword comes out and you will see a 9.5 along with mgs4 and kz2.
but for now i am just seeing a bunch of lowsy ported titles like tiger woods football racing
same crap thats on the 360 and a matter of fact that is all that is on the 360, i mean i will say gears of war was a good game , but i just had to sell the 360 , one game alone is not enough for me to keep it. ps3 on the other hand lets you copy boot leg movies on it , and lets you pretty much do anything except play burnt games.
xbox360 does not even have a web browser or a bluray. and no offense kz2 and mgs4 look far better than halo 2.5 , i mean i beta tested halo 3 and it was garbage. and i feel more safe that my ps3 is not going to crap out on me.. through software or hardware

But Lair better than Resistance? Better than Warhawk, Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Motorstorm and a number of other PS3 games I could mention! Oh please. Lair got the reviews it deserves, but naturally, it doesn't matter how bad a game is, or a film, or a book, or an album etc, there will ALWAYS be people who like it, but that doesn't mean the reviews are wrong!
And like I said, you're inconsistant. One moment you say "the only downfall of it is the gameplay is lacking a little bit, you play the game by doing tasks and some of them can get a little boring", and yet at the same time you say the game is fun? Seems to me you are a classic 'graphics whore', where graphics matter to you more than gameplay. Those who don't like Lair seem to prefer gameplay over graphics (as a real gamer should). Hence because you're impressed with Lair's graphics, you are happy to ignore the poor gameplay, just like people who like a cr@p film with a poor plot and bad acting just because it has great special effects.
Lastly, your comments about the 360 are as wrong as your comments about Lair being the best game on the PS3. In fact, given what you've said about Lair compared to other PS3 games, everything you say can be taken as a joke. ;)

It's ridiculous to use a special USB controller just to play the game controllably.

It's comfortable
It has rumble
Analog sticks work best
The wireless is interference free

Nah, that can't be it, they can only dislike the game because they can't get used to the controls. Yeah, that's it, I feel much better now.

Long time no see/read!
Anyway, from most of the Critic and User reviews I've read on the Net for this game so far, these are the two viewpoints that seem to jump out consistently:
Either
(1) The motion-sensing Control scheme sucks
Or
(2) The Control scheme takes some getting used to, but it is worth the effort to learn, as the game is fun to play.
This makes me think that most of the poor reviews are a result of Game reviewers, pressed for time, trying to finish a game and review it quickly and not bothering to really give a new Control scheme a chance (this can't be really compared to the Wii as motion-sensing is an integral part of the Wii and so any reviewer HAS to get acclimatized to it to review a Wii game, while this is not integral to 99% of PS3 games, so most PS3 reviewers won't bother to truly learn it).
That being said, I do hate having time limits in games as well. I have enough deadlines at work without having to try to make a deadline in what should essentially be a fun activity.
I'm playing Warhawk at the moment (or rather, will start this weekend) - bought the headset bundle, but after I'm finished with that, I'll give Lair a try and see if the poor reviews are indeed justified or just a bunch of lazybones reviewers trying to get on with their jobs.
Regards,
Thinker/MTK
