PSN logo - Image 1From UK and been having problems accessing and/or using the PlayStation Network between 5PM and midnights the past week? That would be thanks to Sky Broadband. The company has since sent out their apologies, explaining what the problem was.

A rep for the company said:

Our network management system mistakenly classified PlayStation 3 traffic in a way which meant some customers using their consoles to access the Internet may have had their speeds reduced, in line with our network management policy for Sky Broadband Connect. This was a mistake and resulted from a systems error, for which we apologise.

Our team is working on fixing this as a matter of urgency. All other Sky Broadband users are unaffected, as there are no traffic management policies in place for our no-network broadband services.

Don't worry, though. The traffic management is only applicable for those who are subscribed to them, and are using peer-to-peer application (torrents).

There are no restrictions in place for applications such as web browsing, email, video and audio streaming, instant messaging and VOIP during peak times. And we do not put restrictions on our network outside of peak times (5PM to midnight).

» Misleading...

Actually only a very very small percentage of us use Sky broadband, mainly because it is one of the worst providers. Most of us have access all day long at full speed.

Now thats annoying. I hate that these internet providers do this crap. They advertise the available speed/bandwidth, just to decrease it because you want to use it. If you pay for it, you should be able to have full availability the whole time. If there is doubt that they can manage full traffic and have to decrease the availability, then they shouldn't get so many customers until they can handle the traffic without ripping people off. It's like a car dealer making two customers buy the same car without them knowing it and making each one pay full price.

» goddd

living in the countryside you'd expect me to have problems with broadband but with sky i dont.

full bandwidth access with no speed drops, i can torrent all i want and bash out a bit of lag-free cod4 at the same time

top quality service from sky with the top package, and having a low ping is even better

max_delay on the line is also '8ms' down from 32 which means its even faster!

yay for sky x
