An Emmy Award for Best Supporting Controller in a Next-Generation Console War

More news from the CES. This time, it's for the PS3. Sony's PS3 picked up the CES Best of Innovations Award for 2007, PC World's 20 Most Innovative products Award, Sound and Vision's Editor's Choice Award, and a Digital Innovation Award from the Digital Entertainment Group.

The console itself isn't the only Sony product getting awards, GamesIndustry reports that the console's Sixaxis Controller managed to get an award too.

The Sixaxis controller has been honoured with an award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences - the Technology and Engineering Emmy Award.

Oh, and Sony also announced that they've already shipped a million PS3 units to North American retailers.

Here's Jack Tretton, CEO of SCEA, being proud of his big black box:

The overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim for PS3 is testament of the platform's strength and the industry's desire for a true next-generation entertainment system. ...The full potential of this powerful machine has yet to be realized. What you've seen so far is just a taste of what will be on the table for 2007 and years to come.

This is so funny, wonder how much those awards cost.

by RommelTJ - 2007-01-07 23:51
» Yeah right,

like Sony cares about buying advertising. That is not Sony's forte. Remember the PS3 and PSP ads?

Listen, the PS3 is finally catching up, and you can expect these type of awards to pop-up all over the place. With the awesome line-up of games for the ps3 this 2007, who knows who will win the console war!

I do know one thing for certain: it's going to be a battle between Nintendo and Sony.

Microsoft is starting to fail. The Zune failed against the iPod. The Mac is starting to gain a stronger foot on the PC(although I prefer the PC's). Xbox will NOT succumb against the Wii or the PS3, but it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft calls quits soon after.

» A Little Jealous Are We.... :)

Its About Time you Show your true Fanboyish Nature.

Why Are you So Mad...Its Well-Known That the PS3 is A PowerHouse of Technologies...from Blu-ray and CELL,to Bluetooth and Wifi.

by Broken_Hero - 2007-01-08 00:28
» Weird...

IGN reported the News of Xbox360 Hitting 10 Million in CES....But they Did not report the PS3 awards or the 1 Million PS3,s Sold in One 6 weeks[surpassin g the PS2].

I Hope IGN doesnt Follow Gamespot and 1UP in their Biased Nature :/

by sdfsfd - 2007-01-08 01:42
» yeah

so what exactly is innovative about ps3 ?

by a - 2007-01-08 02:04

the cell processor...

» PS3 haha

PS3 wiill fail big time. Wii60 wiill wiin big time. You *****ing Sony fans are dumb asses.

by Vietone - 2007-01-08 03:08
» Great news

With the power of the PS3 showing itself to be above the Xbox360 with games like LAIR, Motorstorm, AFRIKA, its great to see Sony getting what they deserve, because in the end, the technological jump from the PS2 to PS3 is much much greater then the Xbox360 or the Wii from their former

by wow - 2007-01-08 04:07
» wow

No, PS3 will win. Idiots like "lol" will get owned in about a year or two when the PS3 overtakes the wii60. Yes the wii and 360 are both great systems but can not match sony once its get momentum.

by ContrAss - 2007-01-08 04:15
» thats hilarious

cause the ninty-ninnys call it a wiimote knock-off and the 360 fanbois calls it the SUXASSIS but Consumer Electronic Show calls it the best innovation of 2007! then of course a spot in the PC World's 20 Most Innovative products Award and Sound and Vision's Editor's Choice Award as well as Digital Innovation Award from the Digital Entertainment Group so all in all, we can say Sony is as good as dead. right?

F.u.c.king hilarity.

by fdssfda - 2007-01-08 04:49
» yeah, but

what's innovative about the ps3 ? ? It's a simple question.

by Horny - 2007-01-08 05:13
» I'll try

I'm guessing their thinking about the cell processor and how its so different from everything else. Maybe because its made for ultimate media and a fraction of getting all the different machines themselves. Top of the line bluray, nice sized hard drive that you can change out, easy to add music and ***** to.... I dont know

by PlayStayShun - 2007-01-08 05:24
» Well

The 360 hitting the 10 million they predicted....great news. PS3 falling short of their predictions...who cares. ;)

by PlayStayShun - 2007-01-08 05:28
» AFRIKA? LOL!

Are you kidding? Motorstorm looks good, and so does Lair (although the jury is out on whether the game itself will suck or be great). But none of these games are beyond the 360. The PS3 is only as powerful as the 360! Well, a tiny bit more powerful, but not much of a difference, and WAY less than it should have been for a console launching one year after the 360.

by ffadjlk - 2007-01-08 05:35
» hmm

id have to say its hardware and everything it can do that the wii can do minus the cursor and speaker... you wonder why wiimote didnt get it? well thats cause sony was making the sixaxis before nintendo started on the wiimote.

by comedy - 2007-01-08 07:59
» cell is quite something

cell is really a very new way of thinking. i'ts not just multiple cores... it's innovation, and as such no devs can really make it sing yet. it will show itself as something else, but only after a long while - it took sony themselves ages to get anythign as good as god of war out, and look how long ff12 took to make. and that's the emotion engine, which wasn't as much of a change as the cell is this time round.

i don't get why sixaxis won this innovation thing, isn't the wiimote more different?

oh well, so be it. makes no difference to me, i'll get whichever has better games.

by PlayStayShun - 2007-01-08 09:19
» Learn to read

The CES award is for the PS3 console, it's not specifically for the SIXAXIS. For the controller, I'll quote the report; "The Sixaxis controller has been honoured with an award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences - the Technology and Engineering Emmy Award."

The 360 got it's fair share of awards too, and I'm sure the Wii has also. It's common with new high profile hardware.

by GamerFeed - 2007-01-08 10:27
» But what was that you were saying about 360 sales before? :)

Remember this?

http://ps3.qj.net/NPD-clarifies-recent-sales-reports/pg/49/aid/78169

You said; "i have read many analyses saying that the 360 sales were actually disappointing this Christmas"

So like I said, you were lying.

;)

by ContrAss - 2007-01-08 10:31
» oh

you're right. I should of put on my reading glasses. Sorry, i also just wanted to use SUXASSIS just once. I thought it was witty. Still, PS3 getting some industry respect is much needed.

SUXASSIS hehe

by CBMaster - 2007-01-08 10:56
» Well @ RommelTJ

About the PC thing... Macs will never win the computer market whether anyone likes it or not. The dumbasses at Apple are just competing Mac with Windows, which is not the only PC operating system. There is also Linux, which is known as the best operating system in the world. Plus, the Mac IS a PC, as Im running Apples crappy OS on my x86 PC!

by mahesa - 2007-01-08 13:14
» ur wrong

360 will win , wii isnt guna...cuz u no nintendo said they aint competing

by rd261 - 2007-01-08 14:45
» ...

Why are you running it if it is so crappy? I dont know about linux, but I can tell you that os x is like 100 times better than windows xp/vista; I mean microsoft didnt even bothered to create a new os, they just shipped the same os full of viruses with a useless black theme.

by Devise - 2007-01-08 22:20
» ...

Here is a quote from an unbaised PS3 and 360 owner. So true it is.

"I'm sorry, I think it's total bs how this controller could win anything. Sure, it's lightweight and wireless, but:

1)Bluetooth ISSUES!

2)Same (uncomfortable) design that has been in use since the 90's

3)Motion sensing function - the ONLY reason why it is there is to counter (or copy, call it what you will) Nintendo's Wiimote.

4)Those analog sticks don't feel as precise/accurate as the 360's analog sticks..."

by Broken_Hero - 2007-01-09 00:16
» What is this...A Joke..Perhaps :)

Anything Posted by you Device is Biased ;)

And I am Sure that Unbiased Owner[Probably you] is not As Professional as the People in the CES...So Please Calm Down.

You Didnt think the 360 DVD drive would win an Award...Did you..??

by Broken_Hero - 2007-01-09 00:30
» Nope...No Lies

We Still Dont Know If its 10million Sold to [Retailers] Or [HouseHolds] [there is a big Difference]...there is no Direct Quote saying 10 Million in HouseHolds [A quote not A title]

by Mr. Common Sense - 2007-01-09 00:35
» ????????????

Innovation only matters if it can do something that hasn't been done before. What can the PS3 do that before could not be done? I guess it counts as a cheap blu ray player. Is that worth an award? NO.

Can the cell do anything that hasn't been done before? HELL NO. Oh wait it's an excellent hype generator.

What's special about the sixaxis? Was sony the first to use motion sensing or bluetooth, NO. Is it just a marginal improvment over the dualshock 2? YES.

So how much is the CES selling awards for anyway?

Again, BlueRay isn't for gaming. It was the reason the console was delayed a whole year and why sony couldn't hit it's ORIGINAL shipment target. Sony put BlueRay ahead of gaming and everyone who bought a PS3 isn't getting what they should. The PS3 should be around $350-$400, have less software glitches, a tighter OS, and have around 200 games released by now. But instead you have BlueRay and your losing your exclusives and install base to a competing consoles.

You have been used as format whore.

» Is BlueRay Winning?

I did a little research.

"Sony plans up to 100 Blu-ray video titles in 2007"

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlenews.aspx?type+technologyNews+storyID+2007-01-09T013431Z_01_N08420903_RTRIDST_0_TECH-ELECTRONICS-SHOW-BLU-RAY-DC.XML+WTmodLoc+TechInternet-C3-Technology-5

HD DVD - "More than 300 more titles are expect to be released over 2007 with an anticipated revenue of some $600m."

http://techdigest.tv/2007/01/ces_2007_hd_dvd.html

Here's a good paragraph from that article

"More than 300 more titles are expect to be released over 2007 with an anticipated revenue of some $600m. Not bad. Most impressive of all, it was claimed that HD DVD is enjoying an adoption rate of 28 movies per player per year, which again is very similar, if not better than, DVD's initial figures. This has been helped largely by its sale of 'hybrid' HD DVDs. They work as ordinary HD DVDs, but if you don't have an HD DVD player handy you can just pop them in a standard DVD player and watch the SD version. Very smart idea. This has helped people ease themselves into the HD idea and makes building a decent HD DVD library a bit less intimidating."

The fact is more movies are coming out for HD DVD the studios are getting behind it because of the 'hybrid' HD DVDs that a complatible with regular DVDs. The quality is better on HD DVD because of the VC-1 codec that is being used. And by the time the PS3 is a reason price there will be cheap standalone HD DVD players.

Unlike some idiots I'm not claiming victory. It's still too close to call. Sony and it's partners are trying bullsh** tactics to make people believe BlueRay is winning, when currently it's not.

» Wrong As Usual....Devise :)

The Link I gave you is from [CES 2007] which is the Most Important Tecnology Event...And Gave a Clear Idea on What the Major Studios Think[Not what you Think]..or what reuters think :)

HD-DVD had Better Image Becase of the VC-1 Codec while Blu-ray Used "Mpeg-2"...this is a temporary Problem...as Blu-ray Will use better Codecs in 2007

Blu-ray is Clearly Favoured....Watch the Studios Line-up for Blu-ray announced in 2007...

It is Easy.....Blu-ray Allowes for More Content, and Can Accept Even Higher Resolutions than 1080P [Should the Future] Make it...[and there are Higher Resolutions]

I suggest you recheck the Links i Gave.. :)

by Devise - 2007-01-09 03:01
» Thanks had a second look.

The analyst is and I quote "rather obscure UK-based data service Understanding and Solutions". Not a Major Studio.

Also had a look at the last paragraph in the link you gave me.

http://gear.ign.com/articles/753/753693p1.html

"That being noted, according to Amazon.com sales data, HD-DVDs continue to outsell Blu-ray discs on a regular basis, so perhaps the format war wages on after all."

Also Panasonic is a hardware manufactor of BlueRay, of course they are going to blow their own horn.

by Broken_Hero - 2007-01-09 04:00
» Somehow...I Knew You that you will Paste that

The Phrase About Amazon Sales was Posted By IGN,who[Judging from their View in the Article] doesnt Want Blu-ray To Win so Fast.

Whats Important is Not IGN,s Opinion...whats Important is What the Major Studios think...Read the Words Of twentieth Century President...and Warner Bros President As Well.

You may Check the Hot Upcoming Movies On Blu-ray with This Link:

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/753/753794p1.html

It Doesnt Recquire Much Calculations,Wi thin 5 Years their Will be More than 80Million Blu-ray Drives through the PS3,Fully Capable of 1080P, PCMI Uncompressed Audio and HDCP compliant.

What Does the Studios Want More than That. :)

by Devise - 2007-01-09 04:18
» Hybrid

How many DVD players are there out there? More than half a billion? HD DVD hybird can play on all these players and will enable people to setup to HD DVD when the players are $40 to $60 in 3 years time.

Again I'm not saying HD DVD is going to win, but anyone saying that BlueRay has won is an idoit. BlueRay is currently losing.

And by the way, Warner is supporting both HD DVD and BlueRay, they are just interested in selling HD DVD + BlueRay titles. In the article they only talk about they are excited about releasing Superman Return on BlueRay which is already out on HD DVD and the 360's Video Market Place.
