Seven reasons to love the PS3

Of the three next-gen consoles locked in this three-way fandango that we call the console war, the Sony PlayStation 3 has received the bulk of the negative press lately. Issues regarding its price, backwards compatibility, and new hardware have drawn a lot of gamers to message board debates.

If you're a PS3 owner or still trying to figure out which game system to get, fear not. It's still too early to tell how this war will turn out and the high-end console is far from beaten. Here are seven reasons why it's good to have a PS3:

1.Exclusive games - Sony has had its wins and losses in the battle of keeping big games exclusive to its fold, but hey, the key pieces are still in place. When you've got the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy franchises in your roster, you can never be counted out. How about the Ratchet and Clank and God of War series? They're still with Sony and there's a good chance that they might be for all time. As development tools are made more available for the system, we can expect a beefed up roster.

2. HD graphics - So far, the PS3 is the only console in the mix which can take full advantage of the power of a cool HDTV, and what we get is simply eye-popping. One can argue that HDTVs aren't in most homes at this point, but in the next three to four years, they may very well be.

3. Backwards compatibility - regardless of whether or not the next Japanese and American PS3s come with the PS2 Emotion Engine or not, Sony has already committed its resources to providing BC with the use of software emulation. Sony claims that over a thousand games will be covered, and the ones you want to play are likely to be right in there. The more exciting thing, analysts say, is that removing the Emotion chip may lower the machine's retail price in the end.

4. PlayStation Home - As early as now, a lot of comparison is being made between PlayStation Home and Nintendo's Mii. Rip-off or not, we'll know soon; but even if it is, it's always a good thing to have an MMO-style community where online players can interact.

5. Built-in hard disk - You may underestimate its value now, but if the vision of digital content contribution ever comes to be proliferated, it's a good thing to have huge disk space to store your games without having to buy that as an accessory. Besides, you can use it now for all the demos and it's still convenient to have.

6. SIXAXIS controller- So maybe the Rumble Technology's gone, but remember when the first Dual Shock came along? A lot of people were equally annoyed with the rumbling. People will eventually forget about the shaking and focus more on the gaming. The motion-sensitivity and the wireless functions are terrific, plus, you can charge it via a USB port. No need to buy AA batteries here.

7. Blu-ray disc drive - You may not realize it now, but you're getting a really inexpensive Blu-Ray player when you buy the PS3. Wal-Mart sells one of the better Philips models for a whopping US$ 898R compare that with a bundled PS3 which sells for US$ 736.54. You get the Blu-Ray and the next-gen gaming. Not bad value right there.

At the end of the day, the PlayStation 3 may or may not win this generation's war, but what really matters more than your console's market dominance is the satisfaction that you get out of it. The PS3 hits the nail right on the head on that regard.

7 alternative reasons to own a ps3 by me:

1.EyeToy HD - Minority Report way of controlling games and your media

2.Linux - Office software, homebrew and emulation (hopefully Mame TMNT and Simpsons Arcade!)

3.PSP Connectivity - Who needs that Base Station anymore to stream stuff to and fro

4.Free Internet - you can also watch flash websites like youtube and download .avi files (MJPEG) from...yeah, you know those type of sites...

5.Keyboard & Mouse - and other interface stuff too (mind control?!)

6.Tivo - Somehow, like Xbox Live TV, you will be able to use the PS3 to record and watch favourite

7.Last Ever External Media Format Usage - It's the final hardware before going download only next-next-gen consoles to own...until they make a PS3 Slim-line as a stop-gap?!

Come 2009 here in the U.S.A. we will no longer receive analog over the air broadcasting. It will go all digital over the air and a lot of televisions will not receive over the air content unless they have a newer tv or a receiver and antenna. I think personally that a lot of people will then purchase newer televisions and myself included will probably not waste money on a standard definition tv and purchase something high def instead. It is just like when black and white went to color, people were glad to buy televisions that were color and now it is mainstream. I know that in the future 1080p will be as cheap as black and white today when you think about all the unbelievable tvs in high def, who know whats next? Maybe by 2030 we will have virtual reality televisions or something. I know I can't wait so as long as a comet doesn't strike the Earth and kill us all. Laugh now but we will all see....

No, but it helps justify the price tag on the PS3. The PS3 is not crap, it is a very well built piece of machinery with some cool games and plenty more to come, unlike what a lot of people are saying. People that bash the PS3 have to realize its still an infant and later this year when theres a lot more games and Home is launched us PS3 fans will be the ones having the last laugh. 3) it has blu-ray, so no 2-6 disk.

4) with it i can wathc Full HD moovies, maybe now this is not so importatn, but after 2-3 years it will, and i will glad to have that option only for paying 100$ (yes blu-ray cost 135$ ant dvd 35$).

5) it has free online, and such ideas like home, sony well known for comfort, so looking farward.

6) hdmi, cell+rsx - ps3 has 2TFlops power, so we will get really nice games, maybe better than crysis. =) + Backward compobilty, which improve ps2 games to 720p/1080i.

7) sony - means quality, ps3 is not noisy, there were no any reports about broken ps3, so i can rely on it.

Sure. You must be thinking "Motorstorm 1080p @ 60fps". You didn't get the memo ("Ooops, it's 720p @ 30 fps max actually, regards, Sony Marketing"), did you? :-P

Recharging the controller with USB... guess what, X360 has that too. With a cable that long enough to actually keep on playing. And at least you have the OPTION to use normal batteries instead of being limited to only one rechargeabl battery pack.

And rumble was annoying, huh? Remember that when they put it back in as they've reached an agreement with Immersion.

You can fall for their "this is great value" all you want, I bet that 95% of PS3 owners didn't actually plan nor want to be early innovators in the HD format war... and I bet all of them would have liked the OPTION to choose between a DVD and a BR edition, with a hefty difference in the price tag.

The reason that got me into this article, personally, was the title. "reason to LOVE the ps3" looked interesting. Turns out it's fanboyish:

- it claims some features of the PS3 are "unique" like HD playing (must have forgotten that other console out there, huh?)

- being FORCED to sponsor Sony's format war is actually something good as WE ALL NEED BLURAY RIGHT NOW DON'T WE

- rumble was crap anyway and sixaxis is teh shizzor (only to celebrate a possible rumble+sixaxis controller in another article)

- mentions exclusive games - alas, a few of the PS2 ones are not exclusive anymore, and quite a few other games are exclusive to the other two big competitors, so no real advantage unless you don't like Zelda, Halo 3 or Gears of War...

- brings up Backward compatibility... man, I don't know what Sony is giving you, but I'd like some, cause it must be good.

- Home... it's not even in beta and we're already hyping as if it was as good as Sony Marketing wants you to believe it will be? Well, kiddies, go read the Q&A PDF delivered by Sony. You might find some interesting things in there. Like a lot of "in the future we will try to implement" and "the basic home" (implying that there will be a PREMIUM version), mentioning that there will be items for your characters - such as clothes and accesories - that can be SOLD by third parties, and lots of other interesting tidbits than, when taken with a grain of salt and without being a fanboy, tell you a lot more than those flashy Sony Marketing press releases claiming "we r teh HOT".

You know what's the worst about this article? I actually came here to see if there was anything that could make me LOVE the PS3 too, because I am still seriously considering getting one on the 23rd when it's released here. Alas, same old, just added the PROSPECT of Home, and I'm not really a "oh my virtual me is so cool, must not leave couch EVARRRRR" guy, sorry Sony.

With my PS3 I don't have to go out and buy rechargeable batteries and a charger, and whether I buy the $500 or $600 console I get a wireless controller, Blu-Ray and HDMI out put. Also I don't have to buy proprietary memory cards for $50, I can use any kind of flash memory I want. To top it off I can actually store my media files on my PS3 as opposed to streeaming them like on the 360. I can transfer my mp3 files photos and videos, not to mention that I get a web browser and can install linux on it. nuf sai

I own a PS3, ive owned all sont consoles since they came out, i also have a dreamcast, i looked at the XBOX when it first came out and I just cound not get over the simple fact that Microsoft re-designed the DC, slapped in a hard drive and called it Xbox... oh sorry i forgot also added those 2 little buttons on the side. If you think im full of crap look at the DC on the lower right hand side in the front of the console and you'll the MS Millineum Edition logo...hmmmmm... which further addes to my hypothysis . Yes the Sega 360 came out first and was "High Definition", the PS3 comes out and is " High Definition" WHO CARES !!!! if you dont like 1 go buy the other and vice versa...... On backwards compatibilty: 360 didnt have that much backwards compatibility at all until a little later after launch. Who was smoking over at MS to only allow certain (horrible) games to be exclusives at launch?

well i own an xbox.... im not dissing the PS3...

...but the xbox 360 can also output in 1080p (the highest HD res available) via the VGA cable. Its not included in any of the packages.... but neither is the HDMI in the PS3.

No you cant. You NEED HDMI, DVI, or Component cable for HD. FYI, PS3 may not be the first console to incorporate HD gaming...but they are first to utilize the full potential of High Definition gaming which is 1080p. The other console max setting is either 480P, 720P or 1080i. Did you ever wonder why Microsoft is thinking about revamping their 360? No HDMI--->HDMI+1080p visual + HD sound.

I'm sorry dude, I own a 360 and I cant defend what you just stated. Unfortunatley we dont have 1080p as our max resolution and the only way to get FULL HD(1080p) is through HDMI. There's no way around it. Even if the 360 had 1080p for gaming, we wont have much use of it because we DONT HAVE ANY games of right now that support that format. We be lucky to have 720p's for some of our games.

P.S. Dont waste your time or anybody else's time if you cant get your facts right.

Its just a deabte :) It creates competition and make game/console developers work harder for our money and attention. this comment section was awesome! the xbox 360 people came by to say hello....wait! why did they come over to trash talk? If you like the 360, then play it; but it does not make sense to be in the ps3 section unless they are scared that the ps3 might be better. i don't have either systems but when i do my research on which one i want to buy it seems the xbox 360 fans are always bashing the PS3. so i guess there might be something to this PS3 after all if the 360 fans are always here too then i guess the PS3 is the way to go. don't get me wrong the 360 is a sweet machine but if you are always in the ps3 forums it must not be that great!

I have a PS3 and i love it, i also had a PS one, PS2 and PSP and i love them. I think most people are forgetting the reason why Playstation is so great. I mean having the jaw dropping graphics is great (actually its to be expected for a next gen console) 60G hard drive, downloadble content, internet access, Blue Ray capabilities and wireless internet and controllers, free online, and backwards abilities (which all my ps2 and ps1 games work) ARE NICE AND Are COOL FEATURES to HAVE. In reality it doesn't make the system. I remeber 3 or 4 years ago XBOX boasted about their graphics and their hard drive. IN THE END i believe in the console wars they were still in second place. Lets face it people it matters on the game selection. I know there aren't a lot of games on PS3 right now BUT FRANKLY I KNOW I COULD AFFORD TO GET them if they weren't out because of their prices(360 and ps3) AS OF RIGHT NOW SO IT SUITS ME. But I know in the future there will be Final fanasty, Metal Gear, Devil May Cry, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Gran Trismo, Heavenly Sword, Resident Evil, Kill Zone and countless other titles. I don't feel its a waste of money. And yes i know some of those titles are on 360 but they are still on Sony so why bother switch consoles. Every console has their strenghts and weakness. 360 is an ok system for me but ps3 is a better fit. It all matters on what ur willing to pay for!

Talladaga Nights was great comedy movie. i do agree with you though on the big selection part its kinda crappy but they said the same thing aabout umd selection and now there are twice as amount movies than there are games so time will tell

Ok i own a PS3 AND I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. bUT I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THE 360 SUCKING. Its a nice approvement on its older version. And has some nice titles like DOA, HALO and my fav Gears of War which could rivial some PS3 games.

IMO, the PS3 won't win the console war, but will come in a close second, Wii being the first and the 360 last. America loves 360, Japan doesn't. Japan loves PS3, as do some Americans and Europeans. The Wii is loved by everyone.

BTW, before I get bashed, I do not own the Wii, but a PS3.

I gotta agree with joe i'm not a Wii hater is ok system but a lot of their games are gimmicky (not sure if thats an actual word). I mean for those who aren't mario or zelda fans theirs very few games on the Wii worth buy. If i had 300 to kill yea i would buy a Wii because of Smash Bros but thats it. I applaud them for doing something different but in the end is it something ur gonna play constantly most of their games are just party games "Wii Sports".

Anyway i just can't see myself play games like dragon ball or madden, SSX TRICKY, Resident Evil on some plastic nun-chuck. Right now 360 seems like a more solid system than Wii. Its just Wii has followers spaning from a decade now so of course they are gonna follow Wii. Plus the main factor is its cheap plain and simple. I betch if all systems were 250 or however much Wii cost who do u think would have had a better sale?

This is all Crap, I'm fed up of people constantly flamming the PS3 because of it's price and ETC.

Lets start off with this

PS3 games are alot cheaper then 360 games (which means in the long run you will save money)

PS3 has alot more features then the 360

The Blu-ray on the PS3 can advance the games more then the 360, in a few years the 360 will have reached it's full potential and the PS3 will race ahead of it.

Also this really annoyed me Gamespot said the PS3's online play was "standard", But it's free, on the 360 you pay for the online and it's about $70 a year, which if you look closly in the long run will also save you money.

This Console is for true gamers.

and lets face it the Wii is rubbish and dont give me any of that motion sensoring Crap

1. Exclusive Games: PS3 has the least exclusive games of the next-generation consoles. Plus they're constantly losing former exclusives such as GTA (which is coming for 360)

NOT TRUE! The xbox 360 outputs the same resolution (1080p) as the PS3, and the graphics technology lets game designers make the xbox 360 games look better.

3. Backwards Compatibility - Although PS3 does support more of their older ps1/ps2 games, the xbox 360 supports all the good xbox games you'd actually want to play. Plus, the xbox 360 upconverts all original xbox games to High Definition. Why on Earth would anyone want to play old games on their ps3 if it'll look just as crappy as it looked on the older consoles. The xbox 360 makes your old games look amazing!

4. With the 360, you can download movies and tv shows in hd over xbox live or through a windows media center based computer. You can also stream video, audio and pictures from your pc. Oh, and you can also run your ipod and your psp on an xbox 360.

5. Built in hard disk - The new xbox 360 elite will feature a 120GB hard-drive. That's double the size of the ps3's. Imagine the amount of HD movies/videos you could store with that hard drive. Oh, and the "Elite" will come with HDMI and an hdmi cable, which Sony charges $60 for (unless you want to play in 480i).

6. Controllers: PS3 controllers have no rumble/force feedback. That's gotta suck! Plus, no game developers are even using the motion sensing technology, unlike the Wii. Oh, and the ps3 controller doesn't have a removable battery. So once your battery dies from too many recharges, you'll have to buy another $50 controller. And, the 360 can also recharge via usb.

7. Hi-Def player - Big deal. PS3 has blu-ray. You don't get to choose to have it or not. With the 360, you can choose to get it or not. HD-DVD has the same quality/resolution as Blu-ray (1080p) too, and you'll never, ever need the 50GB of space it has. What's the point.

8. Games - Xbox 360 has much better games than ps3 has or will ever have. Halo 3 is gonna be the best game in the history of video gaming. PS fans said that Killzone would be the 'Halo Killer'. Killzone was not the 'Halo Killer', it didn't even come close. IGN ratings: Halo - 9.7 Halo 2 - 9.8 Killzone - 7.5

What makes you think that Killzone 2 is gonna be any better?

9. Online play - Although PS3's online play is free, it sucks compared to the xbox live. Don't even begin to argue this, because it is a fact. Also, $5(CAN)/month for xbox live is pretty cheap (compared to Wow - $20-30/month). Plus, PS3 game developer's can choose to charge you to play their game online.

10. Price - The Xbox 360 is better than the ps3, and it's cheaper. Even the Elite is $120US ($150CAN) cheaper than the "equivalent" PS3. So why get a PS3? I personally don't know. I recommend that you playstation fanboys purchase an xbox 360 and experience the future of videogames.

First off the whole tilt function and no one uses it. You must don't own a PS3 OTHERWISE you would have made that comment. Motor Storm, Resistance, Need for Speed, are few games i know use the tilt function. Spider Man 3, lair and lot other games are suppose to be use the tilt function. 2) You made the comment why would anyone want to play any of the older games one could say the same thing about old XBOX games its just a nice thing have for your system. And as for halo 3 be best game i'm not sure the first game was fun i give it that but the second came extremely short in comparrsion to the first we will see hopw the third fairs. The last thing i want to say is yes PS3 has lost some exclusive titles like GTA but its GTA i mean its the same type of game over and over nothing is new about it. They however have some exclusive titles like LAIR, Heavenly sword, rachet + Clank, MSG, FFV, Devil May Cry, Tekken, need i say more?
