Mega Man 9 must have revived the retro spirit in Sega.

The studio will be resurrecting several of its classic games from the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, if you prefer) on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, including the first three Sonic the Hedgehog games released on the classic platform.

According to the press release, the SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is described as "Sega's glorious past [...] gathered in one colossal collection." And quite a collection it is; it will include 40 first-party games from Sega, which includes:
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3
  • Columns
  • Alien Storm
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Space Harrier,
  • Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3
The collection will also be able to output the games in 720p with higher resolution graphics for HD TVs. The collection will be released in early 2009.

Awesome! I love "Streets of Rage"! Those old side-scroller beat-em-ups are my favorite!

» download?

i hope it's a downloadable game. it seems it'd be alot better that way than to put it on a disc...

» why sega why...

i seriously doubt these will be much more than roms running in a sega licensed emulator... anyone remember the sega smash packs?

i'm a diehard sega fan, sonic will always own mario in my book. that said, sega should focus more on creating a glorious present... otherwise what will they sell in 24yrs? sonic 1 40th anniversary edition...

and really the only thing HD will do for these games is make them look worse...

you want those genesis games to look the absolute best they can? SD is the only way... it's why i bought a CRT HD tv. a fixed pixel display is no good for anything other than it's native resolution.

I have been waiting for those for sometime.

» Hmm

Unless they're redoing all the sprites for the games, they will look like muck in HD.

The fan remake in development, Sonic 2 HD by SonicRetro, is the way it should be done.

» upscaled to 720

but still retains same old sd resolution.

if my eyes arent deceiving me from the looks of the screenshots i say they are just using an emulator and added 2d filtering (aka super eagle etc).

exactly looks the same on my pc with 1920x1200 resolution and filtering.
