SCEJ to stop shipping 20GB, 60GB PlayStation 3 units this month |
Ó
In a recent press release, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced that it will stop the shipments of both the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 models to its region this month. The company has decided to shift its focus on selling the 40GB version of the system which will be going for much less than the older PS3 models.
According to SCEJ, this move should "vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform by further concentrating on the 40GB hard disk drive model."
The 40GB PlayStation 3 which does not play PlayStation 2 games and has only two USB ports instead of four was introduced to the market for ¥ 39,980 (about US$ 364).
Now the question stands, will this move by Sony pay off? We guess we'll have to wait and see. The reduced price of the system might encourage more Japan-based gamers to pick up the console though the lack of backwards compatibility might still prove to be an important factor.

Is this only in Japan? I still know people who want the 60gig model when they can afford it. They like backwards compatibility as well and how about the 80gig model? Are they still going to ship that one? Maybe that will be they only choice at that time.
The 40 gig sucks....can't even play PS2 games. 80 gig was a half ass emulation.... The 20 gig is 'a manual roll up window car....' Sony should've tried to cut cost without sacrificing features. I'm glad I got a 60 gig PS3.
Whatever happened to the PS3-AV version? The one with integrated AV and a lot of extra fancy stuff that was going to cost a bazillion dollars???
According to the press release the announcement was only for Japan.
If they can't even sell enough 40GB models do you think they would even release a model that would top that model in price ?
I think not.
the 60gb was one the best ps3 out there
And it was the only system that could play some of the PS2 games. Because it had the Emotion Engine in the PS3.
they need to keep that 60 boy floating around. Now the 20 gb meh, but that 60 man.... they gotta keep that one around. That 60 gig is the truth
