SCEE VP: PS4 @ 2010

New kid on the block in five years?Reacting to Yuta Sakurai's opinion that the recent Sony management shuffle would mean Sony's eventual exit from the gaming hardware market, SCEE VP of Technology Paul Holman claims that Sony is still intent on releasing a PS4... in 2010 at the earliest. And 2010 isn't even ten years after 2006, if you've noticed.

Here's what he said, reported by the Australian SmartHouse Lifestyle Tech Guide: "To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched." In the meanwhile, he also said that between now and then, Sony will continue to update the PS3 through firmware updates, to expand its gaming and home entertainment capabilities. He even hinted at interactive controllers a la Wiimote.

Right now, to be honest, it's just talk, even from an SCEE VP. The PS3 just launched! Of course, this may also be reassuring talk, partly to assure investors and gamers that Sony has no plans of leaving the console market anytime soon, and partly to shove it up Mr. Sakurai's... analytical opinion. More to the point, it is interesting to observe that while the PS3 has now just launched, support continues for the PS2; the same may hold true for a PS4/PS3 world five - or ten - years from now. But then, the PS3 just launched, people!

Speaking of launches, for its PAL (Euro-Aussie) launch, look to an additional firmware upgrade, and possibly up to twenty titles to take home with that brand-new console. Holman also mentioned that "in the future", the console could also come with a keyboard and mouse for multimedia. Since we can use third-party USB mice and keyboards already, we take this to mean potential first-party accessories (maybe even "included in the box?").

...the difference between 10 years life time and 10 years till next generation?

The PS3 is out (at least in some places) but, unlike some competitors, the PS2 didn't drop dead yet and won't do that for quite a while. If it keeps getting whileworth games for at least three years, and the PS1 history shows this wouldn't be a miracle, the PS2 would have a life time of 10+ years.
