SCEE R&D reveals PS3 dev kit designed for academic use |
Ó

It looks like Sony is extending their support for schools and universities with courses geared towards computer engineering and programming. At the Develop Conference 2009, SCEE R&D's Sarah Lemarie revealed that a PS3 dev kit designed for academic use is in the works.
"We have started a PS3 Academic Development Programme, and we're referring to the dev kits as mini-dev kits, which I can best describe as being in a closed beta stage at present," said Lemarie. "We'll be opening this beta up slowly."
"Of course universities can use Linux to program on the PS3 but I would really strongly recommend that if you are interested in the PS3 you look into this, as the experience you will get over Linux is quite incredible," she added.
The PS3 dev kit includes a consumer-sized PS3 with a low power function, two USB ports and a full SDK. Sony's cross-platform game engine PhyreEngine will also be made available as part of the program.
Sony has already provided academic institutions with PS2 and PSP dev kits in the past as part of their PlayStation-edu program.

Isn't the Phyre engine used in Ghostbusters?
That engine is amazing!
Hey guys help me out, what game company programs for the 360, & whined about the PS3 being harder to develop for? Maybe, one of these universities can mail them information on their college, so they can enrol & learn how to program a PS3 finally! lol
it's Valve.
Terminal Reality created their multiplat Infernal Engine for ghostbusters and are now trying to get other devs to license it
it wasnt valve, it was just some looser that worked for valve that said it. Valve came out and stated that they were looking into development for more ps3 titles and basically discredited their "employees" comment, in other words they disowned his arse.
Personally i would prefer to develop for the ps3 BECAUSE its harder, its like games, how far and accomplished can you say you are by beating tekken on "very easy" difficulty, others would laugh at you for your incompetence.
It doesnt lead to margin of discovery or satisfaction When you find a great string of algorithmic code to help performance, or find extra ways to bring out its power.
it isn't really "some loser that worked for Valve" it was Gabe Newell more/less. but yeah, I think he is pretty stupid for those comments.
It doesn't matter which person said it, one person doesn't represent the entire Valve company.
Valve has been trying to get a bunch of Talented PS3 developers to work on some games, cause iirc the company would be for having a better port versions of their games on the PS3.
Besides, if any one of their games like left for dead or maybe Half Life could be ported in the future I'd prefer it not to turn up as the half ass port EA did with the orange box.
Valve do not hate the PS3 it's just 1 person out of their company who said the PS3 is a waste of time then fanboys across the web, like usual, misconstrue and twist the statements saying "Valve hates the PS3. TORCH THEIR BUILDING!!".
Regardless as I said, Valve is looking into getting talented PS3 devs to work for them and make some better ports. :)
I think they are going to have a damn hard time at that, seeing as the PS3 version is horrendous.
