SCEE: PS3 lifecycle to last longer than PS2's

The PS2 has been around for almost ten years now, but it's still going as strong as can be expected from a last generation console. It has sold more than any other console to date, both home and handheld, but SCEE boss Andrew House believes that the PS3 will eventually trump it in terms of lifecycle.

"If you look at the PS2, still in some markets going very strong, especially in North America in its tenth year on the market, we still can't predict where that lifecycle will end," House told Edge in an interview in the magazine's latest issue.

"I have a theory that with successive generations, and with more value added and built into the console in terms of experience - and let's not forget that the PS2 really didn't offer a tremendously robust network experience - that what you effectively do is potentially lengthen that lifecycle more and more as you get to the next iteration," he added.

With less than three years under its belt, the PS3 is still in its infancy, so it remains to be seen if House's theory comes to pass. Some industry insiders have predicted a new console generation to kick off in 2012, but keep in mind that even if that does come true the lifecycles of this generation's consoles can still continue even further, just like the PS2's.

Hmmm

if PS3 lasts any longer than the PS2 I'm afraid at this rate by the time PS3 dies out PS5 will be coming out meaning that sony will always have 2 consoles 1 current and 1 last generation.

?

with that logic, you mean the PS4 will coming out while the PS3 is fading? 2 consoles; 1 current and 1 last generation. I'm pretty sure you cannot find a BRAND NEW PSone in any retail stores right now.

Well

With the tech behind current systems they'll be able to last a lot longer. They only issue comes down to the companies behind them. Will they screw things up (like MS making it seem like Natal is the future...) or will they push the system to its limits? Time will tell, when the PS4 hits they'll have to improve on the PS3 graphics and overall horse power by a lot and manage to make it at a reasonable price (as if) until that happens expect to be playing your PS3 for a good long time. Nintendo on the other hand set their bar low, way low, like 6 feet under. They'll probably have a new system out before everyone else.

.

The PS3 *will* last longer. So many people still don't have them but want one, and they'll be gradually able to afford one over time. I'm not being a fanboy (you kids should know me by now), but the 360 won't last that long either. I predict they'll just do the same thing they did with the original Xbox and completely drop support for it to focus on their new system.

Nintendo's next system after Wii

The thing is the Wii got loads of 'casual' gamers. Meaning they don't care about the latest sharpest graphics. Those users just were like 'gee you just swing the stick thingy, I can play videos games now!'. So, I predict Nintendo's next system will NOT sell as good as the wii, as most of those users will not bother to upgrade. :P so nah nah...
