SCEE: PS Home open beta still on track, talks on recession, price cuts

Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1So we didn't see any PlayStation 3 price cuts this year. Will we at least see any next year?

The answer is a definite maybe. SCEE's executive VP Jim Ryan says "We'll look at pricing decisions for 2009 sometime in 2009. It's too early to tell."

On the other hand, he does say that Sony's gaming division doesn't seem to be affected by the economic recession, so that's promising:

The received wisdom on this is that when there's a recession, people stay at home and watch movies and play games. Everything that we've seen so far on sell-through for both hardware and software is that that's the case.

Our numbers don't seem to be affected so far, and we're tracking very nicely against our plans. This is a different economic climate to certainly anything I've experienced, so who can tell where it ends up? But as of now, we're happy the way sales are going.

[...] I think we will be less affected than most business categories.

Also, last we heard, the 45nm Cell Chip starts mass production next year, so that's more reason to hope for a price drop.

Lastly, for die-hards of PlayStation Home who haven't been totally jaded yet, Ryan also confirmed that the Open Beta is still on track to launch before Christmas.

not for me (I already have one) but for the ones that are hesitating between an x360 and a ps3.

home out on the 19th apparently my arse id love it if it was cause that's my 19th birthday anyway back to the point of well my point Sony wont release home till after fall 2009 fact why you ask because 1 the this years Christmas's rush has the potential to steal its thunder in a very bad way and 2 Scee and scea are still arguing about which region it should be released in first fact is there is a 100% guarantee it will not be here till at least January p.s I'm never wrong but maybe someday.

the PS3 (not matter how much it intrinsically sucks), they shouldn't lower the price. Get with it people, the PS3 isn't a gaming console. It's a mini-computer in the console industry. And, Home (their giant tracking cookie) isn't anything to be "die-hard" about.

Shut the f*ck up.

don't criticize the ps3 at all.If you haven't notice the ps3 is much more powerful than the 360 and as it beat in data storage.it has a great hard drive that you can upgrade easily and cheaply.

we don't need any fanboy flaming here.If you don't like the ps3 then stay off the ps3 news section.

and if you havent noticed sony at least tryies to give the people what they want in a system.(EX:linux, webbr owser)....now does microsoft do that?I didnt think so.

We dont pay for online services... The availability to install other OS... Bluetooth capability... Webbrowser... as i own 3 Gaming Consoles xB360 PC ,and Ps3 The PS3 definitely comes out on top... And yes a PC is a gaming console go ahead throw out your windows 98 operating system

forgot Wireless Lan and Bluray, but it's okay, because the PS3 has so much more features than the 360 ...
