SCEE president David Reeves announces PlayTV UK release date |
Ó
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves recently gave out a number of details regarding PlayTV, specifically the launch date and what the device can do for you. While talking with Eurogamer, Reeves said that PlayTV will be released by September 10 in Europe. He confirmed that it will allow gamers to record television shows while playing games, a feature we might add, which will ensure that we never miss another episode of our favorite television shows.
In addition, he also said that this device is also being prepped for launch in other PAL markets: "We've got Australia and New Zealand also lined up for it in January or February, because on their digital terrestrial they haven't actually set the standards yet."
Of course it wasn't easy implementing this, and Sony had to overcome a few technical hurdles to get it to work as Reeves explained: "It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it's done now."
If you plan on picking up PlayTV, Reeves formerly revealed during the Sony PlayStation Day that this device would be available for around € 99 (around US$ 157).

When can I find out if it will work in NA, Canada specifically?
I mean even if its limited use, or I need to jerry rig it to work in some way... its too good to pass up
what about usa
Apparently from what I've read the US uses a different broadcast standard to what the PAL regions like the UK etc. I believe the one we in Australia and the UK etc is DVB-T for digital. The US uses ATSC - which this device isn't designed for. So to avoid any technical jargon, the short answer is no this won't work in the USA - yet. I'm guessing Sony's probably going to have a similar product lined up for you guys later down the track.
The Americans have the PlayStation Video Store which Europe and the rest of the world won't see until sometime in 2009 so having this in PAL territories is only fair.
I expect a version for America/Canada will be out sometime next year.
the only actually feature i see of this, is a decoder box, seriously.. its a bit of a rip
i wouldve bought if..
1, i could get freewiew
2, if i didnt already have a bulit in decoder
they should allow for bravia TVs to beable to connect to the ps3, inorder to record of them
the ps3 is doing all of the work really
its freeview for UK/EU
you won't get a signal in US,canada, asia etc.
stop moaning, US gets everything, about time we got something before you!
greedy US bastard
