Sony has moved to clarify reports that a secret feature included in firmware 2.80 opened up more of the PS3's memory to developers, most likely stemming from a reduction in the console's OS footprint.

The reports surfaced after the following comments were made by Naughty Dog staff at Comic-Con about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves:

Naughty Dog is constantly working to improve every aspect of the gameplay; be it animation, lighting, sound, texture fidelity. You know if you look at the game itself with the 2.80 engine update, you know we're adding more memory, so we get a lot more utilisation of the SPUs, so we increase our optimisation of the Cell processor as well.

As explained by SCEE (and as evidenced by Naughty Dog's use of the word "engine"), what was updated was actually the Naughty Dog Engine. It was a simple matter of confusing "2.80" with "2.0" due to the Comic-Con rush.

Naughty Dog community manager Arne Meyer also echoed SCEE's explanation:

This was just a typical blunder with all the info and people coming up to us constantly at the PS booth at San Diego ComicCon. He was actually referring to Naughty Dog Engine 2.0 updates we made. We had just been making sure at the event that all the PS3s brought in were on FW 2.80, since that is what that build needed to run on, so I have no doubt it was top of mind.

The last time the PS3's OS footprint was made public was way back at firmware 1.80 when it was reduced to 72 MB. Of course, that was a while back so it's still possible that the OS footprint has been reduced further.

That's a huge footprint when you only have 256mb of system RAM.....

» Hmmm

Something is still kind of odd about the original comment from Naughty Dog. I mean, how often does a developer rave about the internal release-point of their software development lifecycle? And, even if so, how likely is it that they'd brag about "using more RAM" in their new engine?

Sure, it's possible that they slipped-up and confused their 'internal software version 2.0' for the game with the coincidentally just-released PS3 firmware 2.8 for the system.

But, it just sounds to me more like maybe they HAVE opened-up more system RAM, but they are using it for their internal titles first (either as a trial, or as a market-advantage). In other words, the original comment was a valid 'slip', but Sony isn't ready to open that up for all developers yet.

512mb total ram

256mb of the ram is actually a faster ram called xdr and the other 256mb is just gddr3 video ram like which in total is the same as xbox 360's shared 512mb of what I think is the slower gddr3 memory. Just xbox 360 keeps getting people saying it has more ram when in reality it has the same but xbox 360 OS uses much less ram which should be since Microsoft specializes in software... as you can see their hardware just breaks down.

Also the way Sony's OS is built in that you have to go through cell in order to use the additional 256mb or something like that.

Casual people dont give a **** what system has more ram.....and if you arent a developer why should you?

» You know what

I care not for consoles because I can't change anything about it. I care that my GTX 260 is better than my other computer with a 8800GT which is better than my crap computer with a 9300GE. I care cause I want my games to play at high resolutions and look good while running like a video game and not a slideshow

» But you know what...

Casual people don't give a crap about which system has more RAM, but they do care if games look better on one platform or another. That massive memory footprint Sony reserves on its system (coupled with the split memory banks) is one of the leading causes for PS3 developers struggling with the system. They're constantly slamming up against the memory ceiling, and they're constantly having to go back and rework assets.

I don't care about console wars either, but seeing as how I own a PS3, I do care a lot about the battle developers wage maxing out this system. If Sony can give them more firepower by lowering the OS footprint, that would make for a better system. (And yes, if you do then want to compare PS3 and Xbox 360, the PlayStation would have less to complain about and hopefully more to amaze you.)
