David Reeves uncertain over PS3's 10-year lifespan - Image 1One of Sony's main arguments to defend against the Xbox 360 is the PlayStation 3's longevity. They once even said that the console is future-proof, and will last longer than the PS2 will.

But now, even SCEE prez David Reeves isn't sure the console will go completely through its supposed 10-year lifespan, saying:

The competition will have new models on the market by the end of the PS3. I have no doubt and weÂ’ll have to be fast on our feet.....I donÂ’t know whether the PS3 lifespan will be eight, nine or ten years.

He does add though, that the PlayStation 4 is not "on the horizon" yet. And it really shouldn't be - even Microsoft's Robbie Bach expects this generation to last longer than previous ones.

Our tricks and tools for creating games haven't been growing exponentially like the power of the systems. The systems get faster and faster, games take longer and longer to develop, the expectations of gamers rise. Due to this it takes longer for a platform to mature and show it's real potential. Crap economy or not, the ps3 needs more time to come into its own, as does the 360.

Yeah, with the online support of SCEE, I'm sure it can last 20 years. It will take them atleast 20 years to get even with the amount of store content in the US store so :)

4th comment - whos the daddy?

....

this is just stupid, he just said it won't last 10 years, he never said that it won't last long, which means, it will last longer than 10 years

by CloudX - 2009-02-26 11:53:18
honestly

dude is really stupid that he opened his mouth about this.

I can understand his concern

I mean the gaming competition has changed this generation then compared to the past. Nintendo was the top dog(with help of Sony) during the NES/SNES and Genesis days. Til something happened and Sony went off releasing their first console PS1. And with PS2, the easiness of the console and it having a bunch of support, compared to MS just stepping into the gaming world with Xbox and Nintendo's underachieving gamecube was a different time. Was plenty of third party exclusives for Sony's PS2 and the longevity was there, which is why both PS1 and PS2 will end up being supported for 10 years. This generation however MS 360 came out first, after them no longer supporting xbox, and they've become to norm for devs to go to, until PS3 and Wii came out where the devs are clamoring over Nintendo's console. While 360 is a fantastic system like the others with their own advantages and disadvantages, the age of third party exclusives are practically over. Hence why FF13 is going to be released on the 360. The competition has upped it's game on all fronts, pushing everyone, more so for Sony and MS with their own services and features which is very similar in how they work. 360 and PS3 is nearly equal now except the overall sales worldwide, but even that's slowly closing the gap. There's no guarantee any of the consoles, even PS3, will be supported. But then again, SCEE has a habit of talking a Load of BS. Remember this "Sorry we don't pay games to stay exclusive or content. We rather use the money to make top notch premiere games like Little Big Planet instead..." SCEE stated this, which i'm sure it was Reeves. So while I can see his point, I don't think it's not going to be supported. I mean the PS4(or whatever it's called) and the next Xbox will probably release around 2012-2013.

nah

man it will just get rrod if its anywhere near a ps3 because of the sheer awesomeness of the ps3

by sickofitall - 2009-02-26 12:36:00
there goes my pro-ps3 argument

but I don't get why they can't support the ps3 for 10 years, along with their next system. They don't have a problem supporting the ps2 for that long.

Two major issues:

First, hes saying that IF it doesn't last the 10 years, its because microsoft/nintendo jumped the gun and wanted their next system out sooner to try to get a market edge. After seeing what a 1 year edge gave the 360, even though its vastly inferior in all forms of technology, sony cant risk that again. Secondly, people tend to forget about "last gen" systems once the new ones start coming out. Look at any system. Once the Ps3 came out, you had about 2-3 months of high profile ps2 games left then the numbers droped. Same for xbox -> xbox 360. Its all market, if sony is the only system with "last" gen technology when the xbox 720 comes out, you can bet it will be a major marketing tool for microcrap. "Look at our system it reads data 10x as fast, has 4x the HDD, and has 4gb of ram!! You can't even make a game on the 720 that the ps3 could handel!" The ps3 did the same thing this generation.

.

its a shame your so ignorant...you really missing out. have fun playing halo wars and ODST because 360 has NOTHING exclusive lined up for this year OR next year.

by BULL3TPR00F - 2009-02-26 13:45:50
well

6 years is Sony's typical console lifespan, since the PS1 they have released a new home console every 6 years.

by girandhistacos - 2009-02-26 15:01:49
Technically

Not really, BULL3TPR00F. The PS1 came out in December '94, and PS2 came out in March '00. That's really only 5 years and 3 months, I wouldn't round it up to 6 years, I'd round it down to 5.

by djman855555 - 2009-02-26 15:16:36
easy answer

blue ray bent sony over and screwed them. hideo kojima even said it

by Shatterdome - 2009-02-26 15:19:55
...

The lowest number he quoted was 8....that's plenty for me...

by Shatterdome - 2009-02-26 15:22:28
Yeah...

I am sure he would have rather split MGS4 up over 8 dvds....that would have been much better...

A reply to someones comment about exclusives...

The PS3 has a lot of exclusive this year that's true... But they've been a LONG time coming. I'd almost go as far to say that they don't matter in the respect to the fact that Sony couldn't get them out in a timely manner. Now that doesn't mean that they won't be great, but it's about freaking time they come out. KZ2 was announced in 2006 and is just now coming out (At least that's better than FFXIII though, so I guess I'll give Sony a point for beating them out the gate). Microsoft take the approach of not announcing anything until they're sure it will be do that year if they can help it. Gears 2 and an example. They didn't officially announce it until Comic Con last year, and it can out that very year. Every game with the exceptions of Final Fantasy XIII and Star Ocean 4, came out that very year (not counting Prime Time). So We'll have to wait and see... Sony of course hasn't shown all of they're card yet either and what they will show will rock the world, but they've got to be more careful and tactful this year. They've let themselves fall from glory because they became complacent and full of themselves. They've realized it and are trying to right the wrongs. This console war is sooo exciting! Whether you own the Xbox 360 or, Playstation 3, or the Wii, I think we're all in for a fun ride!

hmm

if the brass at scee is worried about their flagship product i wonder how are other scee employees feeling about their product?

by chessboxer - 2009-02-27 05:49:18
Many

games have been stuck in development limbo, not just Killzone 2 or anything that Sony has announced. Killzone 2 was announced at E3 in 2005, and so was Alan Wake. Killzone 2 is out now but I have yet to see any gameplay footage of Alan Wake. Team Fortress 2 was announced in 1999 and Too Human was announced as a PS1 game. Then there's Duke Nukem Forever... I'm just happy at the number of quality exclusives announced for 2009, 2010 and beyond, not to mention what will be announced at this years E3, the 2 new projects from Kojima stuff from other 3rd party devs. Hopefully Versus XIII won't be too far off (probably 2011) and maybe Valve will announce Half-Life 3 (after HL2 Ep3 comes out) along with a new Counter-Strike.

by Stealth! - 2009-02-27 16:12:27
Actually

I'm pretty sure Sony was never full of themselves, at least not in the launch year. If I remember correctly they said the PS3 will blow people away...but they didn't specify when. People or fanboys, as they do games blew their statements out of proportion and everyone took it as fact. But, I think all companies to an extent must be somewhat full of themselves, cause it's competition and you think your system will out do the other.

by ShadeyProphet - 2009-02-28 21:45:21
I dont think this is about sony worrying about their product,

Ten years is an unrealistic goal for any peice pf gaming trchnology,, hell just look at the super computers of ten years ago,, they arent still considered so super ten years later are they? for humans, ten years may not seem likesuch a long time, but for technology and developments, ten years can and i promise you will, make a lot of difference, i'm aps3 owner, i love my console, but letsbe honest with ourselves.. A decade?? really?? some people may be happy with a marketing lie to make people feel better,, but as for me, i was just never guilable enough to buy into that fairy tale,,

by ShadeyProphet - 2009-02-28 21:51:19
for the record,

we can debate the ps2.s life span all you guys want, it was a great console, but just because sony wont lay the axe to it, doesnt make it alive,, how many of us are rushing outto buy ps2 games right now? yea,, i thought so,,,
