SCEA's Dille on price cut, backwards compatiblity, more PS3-PSP connectivity - Image 1After playing guessing games with video game consumers, Sony Computer Entertainment America finally confirmed that the 40GB PlayStation 3 model will be made available in the region as well. It will ship on November 2 and will cost US$ 399.99. Aside from losing some features, the said SKU will also sport no backwards compatibility.

In a recent interview, SCEA Senior VP for Marketing and PlayStation Network Peter Dille said that they planned all along that the 40GB PS3 model will come to the States close to the price reduction schedule of the 80GB PS3 models to give consumers more choices.

The said PS3 price reduction involves a US$ 100 price cut. When pressed about the issue of backwards compatibility, Dille answered:

Again, we know from our research that backwards compatibility is more important to some people than others. In practice, once you get the PS3 home, the ability to play games in high-definition is more what they are interested in than their back catalog of PS2 games.

The backwards compatibility feature has been disabled by removing the graphics synthesizer chip in the PS3 that in turn, made it possible to lower the units' cost. Another option that Sony could have taken is the elimination of the PS3's WiFi feature. Peter Dille shared some light on why they didn't choose to take this path:

We'll be rolling out more and more features that take advantage of the connectivity between the PSP and the PS3, and Wi-Fi is really essential to that experience. We've got some cool things you can do today with Wi-Fi, but there are also a lot more on the horizon that will help people understand why we left Wi-Fi in.

» well...

I'm agreed with him, the only game I played in my ps3 was god of war 2, the others game I'm not even look at it, are in the dust.

The wifi thing is really a must for guy like me that hate cables than I needed and for the remote play is a good thing but until I can turn on the ps3 with the psp I will not use it too much, just when someone else are watching something else in the television or I'm in the balcony. It will be cool too that I can play more games in remote play that doesn't require sixaxis. They need a good fall update beyond the 2.0. In my opinion it will be more than 2.0.

They could have atleast kept the current PS2 emulation software in the 40GB models. Shouldn't costs all that much, right ?

No further updates on the PS2 emulation software would have sounded way better than just taking it all out.

» i was thinking the same

thought the software BC was costless but i guess software BC STILL requires hardware. Strange

"Again, we know from our research that backwards compatibility is more important to some people than others. In practice, once you get the PS3 home, the ability to play games in high-definition is more what they are interested in than their back catalog of PS2 games."

Okay? Please provide a source for that.

I'm annoyed by the fact that they've decided to disable the PS2 backwards compability. Not everything is interested in High definition gaming compared to quality games such as MGS, FF etc. This doesn't benefit anyone but Sony.

Then we hear people say "Just buy a damn PS2" Why? They promised us that we would be able to play PS1 & PS2 games, then they changed it. Besides people who own HDTV's are in need of upscaling, besides my PS2 is more than five years old and suffers from a few problems (otherwise working fine).

The problem is that they're screwing around with people. Some people might not notice that the BC has been disabled.

I would be fine if they atleast kept the 60gb version with all the features while selling a the 40gb version.

Anyhow i'm glad that i decided to buy a 60gb PS3 from the beginning. So at least i'm not *****ed at the moment...

» What you guys fail to realize is

This

" Peter Dille said that they planned all along that the 40GB PS3 model will come to the States close to the price reduction schedule of the 80GB PS3 models to give consumers more choices."

Which means that there trying to have more options for consumers if lets say they don't want BS they could get the cheaper one instead of the high price one.

Its really no difference than what MS offers with there Xbox 360's, Core, premium and Elite.

Each one has some differences in it, instead of high hard-drive space. You guys complain when they make high space but no price cut or bundles and no price cut.

Is there no pleasing anyone of you. Stop being selfish and think about others for once. Like i stated before not everyone cares for Backwards Capabilities. If you don't like it, just don't get it.
