SCEA: PS3 has captured the hardcore, will now go casual

PS3 - Image 1

Already released: from Uncharted to Killzone 2. Yet to come: Heavy Rain, God of War III. Of course, there are a whole slew of other hardcore titles smattered in between, and for SCEA's John Koller, he's pretty confident that they've already captured the hardcore market.

Yes, they came, they saw, they conquered the hardcore - and they still do, and will still cater to, it seems. But what of other markets, more specifically the casual? I mean, we can't just live by SingStar and Flower, right? As Koller puts it:

ThereÂ’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that weÂ’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.

WeÂ’ve captured the hardcore. The install base we have now tells us that the hardcoreÂ’s purchased. WeÂ’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises weÂ’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.

Think of some of the latter-half PS2 franchises.

Err, ok, any guesses?

It could round out the PS3's game library a bit, but please let them be QUALITY casual games.

Until a lower price hits, I really cant see what kind of new IP or peripheral type game is gonna grab the casual audience. It's safe to say the Wii owns that market currently. Just make the kiddy stuff like Jak more vibrant and a lower price for the ps3 and maybe push for cheaper software if they can. $60 May not be much to someone who knows what they're buying, but your casual customer just wont risk it often. Aside from that we need more RPGs damnit. Thankfully Cross-Edge is due next month. More niche titles would help like Wild Arms or Arc the Lad. Nothing else really comes to mind. Or they could just bust out a Wiimote copy bundled with sub-par sport games haha.

# price drop...Darthsappy23 2009-04-20 06:34
u know what really grinds my gears? people that ***** about ANOTHER price drop. ive had mine since day one and paid $600 for it. what do they charge nowadays? 4 or 500 bux either way they have already had a pricedrop. although i do agree that they should have antoerh one b/c i have alot of friends that say its too expensive. but yet its worth every penny for what it does. it can do damn near everything a PC can. expesially if u run linux on it. but like the artical says they need to appeal to more casual people, who wont pay that 4 or 500 bux compared to the cheap failbox. i think they need to advertise everything that the ps3 has and can do and compare it to its competitors.

so i suppose in the end another price drop would be good for those people that dont know anything about what they are buying.

They obviously don't need a price drop right now, but when Winter season comes they really should. I feel you on the price issue. I'm not a day one owner but I got mine on ebay for 550 dollars, and I do sometimes hate it, when I hear people say 400 is still too much. But right now the economy is in bad shape, and the casual customer IS what sadly drives the industry. That said, holiday season would be perfect to at least bring PS3 to 350 dollars, 299 will probably bring Sony where they need to be going into 2010. I didn't even mention GOW3, Tekken 6 BR(yes it's 360 also I know, but most Tekken fans will own a PS3). I'm forgetting something I know.....

All those people buying Wii Fit should buy DDR instead! FAT ASSES. Yeah PS3 needs those games, online ranking system and play would be great for DDR. That and a new Castlevania would be awesome. I don't like the GBA and DS rip offs they've done... SOTN pwns that garbage.

PS3 will rip off the wiimote. They already had a patent for exactly that.

If it's actual well designed and fun casual games then fine. If it's cheaply produced shovelware using 'casual gaming' as an excuse to be crap then get the hell out of here.

i mean when it first came out my cousin spent 800 bucks and now you can get one for half.If you want something cheap go buy a wii and stop whining about prices if you want quality gaming pay for quality. As for tekken i know alot of people getting it for the 360 cause of the online party mode and you can see if your friends are playing the game so you can join the game. Plus achievements are cooler than trophies, trophies take long to load and all games should have it not just some.

Its true the PS3 has pulled in a lot of the hardcore gamers. They actually did a pretty good job with their sales strategy since the price was so high I can't imagine the casual gamer family going out and buying a PS3. The units sold so far are probably all pure "hard core gamers" and sounds like Sony knows that. So long as they don't pull a Nintendo and drop everything in the works that is aimed at their core fan base (like what Nintendo did with Disaster, Project Hammer, that horror game that was supposed to be great but never saw the light of day and numerous other titles) they should be fine.

They need to start advertising the PS3 as a multi-media device to get tech lovers and then start pushing out some QUALITY casual games and they'll be set. I didn't get my PS3 until the price had dropped and even after I had it I didn't have much to play on it but now things are starting to pick up a whole lot and its good. Things are starting to go as they should even if it did take them a while

# I smell *sniff sniff******bandit 2009-04-20 22:23
Is that a hint of Fanboy I smell? Link75e your comments always come off as biased. LOL The topic is what Sony should do to gain the interest of casual gamers, not about what people SHOULD do. Hell I think the american market has no sense of real quality, and shouldn't buy Wii just because they THINK it's gonna magically make families play together. I have a Wii in my house, my cousin bought it and guess what? It sits in the living room collecting dust. Sadly she bought it with the crazy idea her crackwhore mom would get off the streets selling herself for money, and her pill popping dad would enjoy some time together with good ol' Wii.

Nobody is "whining" about prices lol. It's common sense to do so when you consider the economy is in bad shape and right now people are going nuts for Wii fit. Dude I didn't say nobody was gonna buy Tekken on Xbox... I said MOST Tekken fans won't. Considering T5DR Online is PS3, and there are NO Tekken 6BR cabinets in the U.S. Anybody thinking about it now will probably eventually get T5DR on ps3, since Tekken 6BR isn't out til OCTOBER. And lol trophies take long to load? Talk out of your ass much? You must be referring to the Trophy Sync option which saves your Trophy information? Either way, by the time Tekken hits PSN will LIKELY be up to par with LIVE. So your party chat point is moot. All games do have trophies from here on out... just not older games. So that point is moot really as well. I can see what games my friends are playing on PSN already....

Link75e, it's obvious you're some kinda MS/Ninty fanboy trolling PS3 QJ,trying to undermine PS3. You try not to come off as one but your lack of real knowledge about PS3 features tells me otherwise.-_-:

# Why?*****bandit 2009-04-20 22:43
I know the majority of QJ readers are probably "hardcore" gamers, and the thought of casual gamers getting their share of games sounds "bad". Why is that though? I mean it's not like the quality of AAA titles is suddenly gonna decline. Bad news would be Sony saying they're gonna tone down GOW3 so they can get a "T" rating and sell more copies. Casual gamers have to buy our consoles if we're to see that atrocities like timed exclusives don't happen again. Money ultimately drives the industry, not disgruntled hatdcore gamers who wish for a perfect world without Wiimotes and "failbox's".

So again I say the solution is a lower price, and more niche games. The customer mostly looks at price and a lot of games. Just because you and I may not see it that way, it doesn't mean we have to look at more casual games as a bad thing. Yes the Wii has a landfill of booty games, it's only because the basis of those games is a gimmicky controller that really can't do what it was initially advertised to.

they did it with the ps2, they are doing it with the ps3, its ok.

they have clearly realised (like most people have) ps3 is for the most hardcore of gamers with next to nothing for the younger or family gamer. its a move the slightly widen there audience. and if you ask me a smart move

but if LBP is to go by, the sales will hardly be great. Sony overhyped that title alot. :(
