SCEA President Clarifies 20GB PS3 Specs

Kaz HiraiWith the recent confusion about the difference in specs between the 20Gb PS3 and the 60Gb variant, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) president Kaz Hirai has spoken and confirmed that the 20Gb model will not feature the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) output and the data card inputs.

In a recent interview with CNN, Hirai said "[Sony] felt that if you want to save something on your Memory Stick, most people have those readers on their PC, which is easily adaptable to the PlayStation 3 with a USB cord... The only difference [between 20Gb and 60Gb] is HDMI - and at this point, I don't think many people's TV's have that. The ultimate result, to my eyes anyway, is there's not a discernable difference between what you get between HDMI and other forms of high definition."

There is still confusion on whether the 20Gb PS3 will also have Wi-Fi functionality, which according to Sony spec sheets would only be available for the 60Gb variant. Mr. Hirai and other Sony execs have not yet shedded light on this issue. Although the Sony Station Launcher has been already announced, the Wi-Fi functionality is still an amorphous concept.

The Sony big boss also went on to defend the prices of the units by saying "I think when you look at what we put into the box - Cell, Blu-Ray, backwards compatibility, the ability to go online - I think it's a very compelling package for consumers. The totality of what we bring to the table makes it a good value for consumers."

He also said that they remain optimistic about reaching the targeted 4 million shipped PS3 units around the globe by the end of the year. Only the future holds the answer for that.

How can he say this with a straight face? There IS a noticable difference between Component and HDMI. Not to mention the fact that the movie studios will probably prevent full-res BluRay movie playback over non-HDCP outputs! Translation = No "true" BluRay movie playback on 20gb PS3.

by comedy - 2006-05-14 00:25
» yeah

they were touting 1080p as 'true' hd, and from what i've heard nothign but hdmi has the capacity for 1080p, with the best available being 1080i.

anyone wonder about that gta4 thing? i mean they managed to fill the dvd of san andreas to bursting point... so in order to expand on that (as i assume they'll want to) rockstar will need more space on a disk. doesn't this mean that they'll need hd-dvd or bluray discs? and wouldn't that effectively nullify microsoft's price advantage as those who would want to play gta4 on xbox350 would need to buy the addon drive too?

by Justin - 2006-05-14 01:32
» hey

The add on drive for the 360 will cost $100 and will only play movies. Now if u think about the PS3 price, its not all that bad. If the premium 360 (controller and 20g HD, like cheaper PS3) had an internal HD drive it would cost $500 too.

by Ry - 2006-05-14 01:52
» I agree

I agree about the part about the price of the whole package. Blu-ray, HDD. You actually get a lot of stuff, so I think the price is reasonable. Some people dont see it that way and I cant see why. HD games and movies...Who doesnt want to pay less for those in a single package?

I really dont know how big the difference between the component and HDMI is, but I think they needed to offer a cheaper solution to people who cant afford the PS3 Premium version. The picture will still be good enough though the digital signal offers a clearer picture.

Guess we'll just have to wait until TGS/November for the rest of the specs.

Hope to see this console soon...and add Wii next to it.

by Ry - 2006-05-14 01:56
» ...and about the HD-DVD

The price is not confirmed for the MS HD-DVD add-on. The Toshiba HD-DVD player is currently pretty expensive and I don't think X350 version will be near 100. It's way too cheap. People are talking more like 200.

by Tomb - 2006-05-14 02:05
» The right price

i think the price isnt too much for the PS3 considering what you actually get. You get: a blueray player, a dvd player, a cd player, the most powerful console in the world, an internet browser, a whole media center, a wireless motion sensory controller, connectivity to the PSP, most probably linux, and lots of other things, and the fact that all of them (apart from the controller) are in one small box which can be taken anywhere! with no extra add-ons!

by FreakShow! - 2006-05-14 02:41
» Only in America

The price that has been set for UK is a lot. An extra £75 on top of the US price. £425 thats kind of scary. I was thinking of buying, but....

The PS3 is superior though. The HD-DVD add on for 360 just shows how quickly M$ rushed to get out ahead of PS3. Bet they're kickin themselves now that PS3 is later.

by uh - 2006-05-14 02:42
» to #7, you cant use that to justify the price

dvd player: have one (most people do)

cd player: have one (most people do)

bluray player: who's going to use that right now? there is nothing out for it. and theres a good chance that it will fail

most powerful console: I can't see the breathtaking graphics they promiced us before..

wireless controller: its only tilt, its just been implemented, and the wii has it for around 200 dollars (or at least somewhere around there)

linux: we don't know about that, and even if thats so, you won't be able to use it like you think you would because there would be so many limitations

small box: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHA

I still don't think tis worth it, but I'm getting a ps3 anyway, along with a wii (NOT a 360)

by Vecha - 2006-05-14 02:48
» what?

"the ability to go online - I think it's a very compelling"

you think making the price 500-600 bucks is compelling with the ability to go online?

I think he was just searching for reasons.

by Killfox - 2006-05-14 03:02
» hu

I have a Tv that supports HDMI and 1080p so im gunna want to get the $600. Anyways that one is better packaged because you get more.

by BULL3TPR00F - 2006-05-14 03:03
» @ 10

what me meant was the ability to browse the web, not just play agmes online.

X360 doesnt have a web browser, Wii prolly wont.

So i do think that the ability to go online is compelling. Heck, some people may sell their pcs, since a ps3 can do what most ppl use comps for, and a whole lot more.

by ssj3fox - 2006-05-14 03:52
» Wii can go online

http://wii.qj.net/Wii-Gains-Another-Ally-in-Opera-Software/pg/49/aid/37098

But I just want the 20GB to have Wi-Fi. If a DS can have it and only cost $120 and it only cost $30 to add to the PC why do I have pay $100 to add it to the 360? Don't be like that Sony!

Also I would never sell my PC! How would I make HL2 maps! UT2007 with out MODs? I bought HL2 mostly for the MODs!

by BloodiedWraith - 2006-05-14 03:57
» @12

You're highly wrong.

Wii does have a web browser. It uses Opera.

by Jacob - 2006-05-14 04:38
» It's worth it if....

I don't have a computer of my own. I use my roomates computer to surf, download movies and music, and to play games.

If the PS3 does all of that, then it's worth 600 bucks for me or anyone else in my position. This computer cost a little over 1000 not counting monitor, speakers, keyboard. etc...

$600 is a shock to me but if it saves me from having to buy a another PC then it's a great value.

by chief - 2006-05-14 06:02
» remember

that whatever the ps3 cant do out the box that the firmware update is still there so sony can implement whatever they want and in my opinion thats alot also go to ps3land.com theres an interview with the person who designed the ps3 he had some interesting things to say about how limited homebrew might be on the linux os and that linux owners will not get full support or something like that, just go read it. also the POWER ADAPTOR is inside the system.

by lansingone - 2006-05-14 06:55
» to 3

if you look at gta san andreas disk size its not even on a DL DVD then again GT4 is on one and it take up 6 GB so GTA4 may have alot of compressed stuff to fit on a DL DVD

by Anon-E-mouse - 2006-05-14 09:29
» @ # 12

the wii has a browser, and the 360 can browse when linked with media center, and apparently will be able to with vista as wel, also access to messenger, tv feeds. media center totally makes the 360 even better...

by - - 2006-05-14 10:34
» @ #18

lol. talk about value?

xbox360 + pc(must be MCE) allows web browser.

ps3 alone allows webbrowser.

price difference? ps3 = 600$

360 ($499) + PC (600-1000?) = greater then 600.

lolololoolol

» grr

look, just think of it liek this; there will be a time when 9 gigs is not enough for a game to be as big or as great as it could be, and that's where (either 2 dvds) or a larger capacity disc are employed. now ps3 has that capability, developers can add all sorts as they have the space, 350 doesn't.

thing is most of us have a pc which can go online, what we buy consoles for is games, (mind you i haven't bought a dvd player as my ps2 does that for me) ... i would like to be able to do these peripheral (in my opinion) functions, like web browsing, playing brd, wifi etc, but in the end what wins this battle of 350 vs ps3 vs wii is the games. ff13 (both of them) and mgs4 were the highlights of e3 for me, i cannot wait for ps3 just to play these games.

also, if you've been lucky, llike me, your ps2 has held up until now even though you bought it at launch and haven't had any problems with it... but it's getting old now, and i wouldn't mind being able to play ps2 discs on ps3, as then i won't have to worry about scratched discs etc.

does anyone know if they'll release a thing so that ps2 peripherals can link up to ps3? i like guitar hero and don't want to have to dig up the ps2 every time i want to play it. i would be nice to have a usb multitap or something (with ps2 ports in of course). and my ps2 memcards!! i haven't even bothered to find out about that....

by ssj3fox - 2006-05-14 14:31

My PS2 will no longer read DVDs so I thought getting a PS3 could fix that. Well we got time till launch to find out all of the details...

by Arwin - 2006-05-14 18:00
» 1080p over Component cables

#21: You can fix that easily though by cleaning and then regreasing the rails on which the laser-platform moves. It's pretty easy to do, you can get to it well enough if you open the PS2 (8-10 screws on the bottom), then remove the lid (4 small screws on the top of the DVD player).

Component video can show progressive by the way. It will be interesting to see how much of that the PS3 will support. 1080p x 30fps through component cables is already supported on a number of TVs. It is said that current cables can't transmit enough data to support more than 1080p x 30fps, but there are some specialist cable makers who appear to have done better.

In the end it will come down to what Sony outputs over component cables / their multi-AV connector. If that somehow does make 1080p/60 available, then you can rest assured eventually TVs that support it will also turn up.

So it's just a matter of waiting to get the final, final specs of the PS3 in hands.

Sounds risky but I'll look into it
