SCEA on GTA4 PS3 freeze: only a 'limited number' is affected

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Image 1Moments after Rockstar Games assured us that they are already working on the freezing issues for Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) gave their take on the problem.

SCEA has assured its PlayStation 3 population that they are teaming up with Rockstar Games to put an end to the problems. They maintain though that only a "limited number" of PS3 owners have been affected by this situation.

Here is the complete public statement from SCEA:

Yes, we are aware of what the message boards and a few of the industry blogs are saying about a 'freezing' issue with GTA IV on a limited number of PS3s. Although we have seen an extremely low volume of contacts to our customer service department regarding such an issue, we want to ensure that every consumer has a great experience on our console and with GTA IV. All parties involved are working to isolate the problem for those few units and identify a solution.

If problems are indeed limited for the PlayStation 3, does that mean most of the reports were from Microsoft Xbox 360 gamers? We really can't tell. Whatever the case may be, stay tuned here at QJ.NET for the latest developments.

I'm not affected, but I would say at least 25% of the users have this problem. I've seen so many people talking about this on forums.

by shark0807 - 2008-05-01 16:32
» 25%?

I would say a great deal less have the problem, maybe 10% tops, it just so happens that those ten percent are savvy enough to contact customer support and forum blog.

by rollypoly - 2008-05-01 16:57
» um

so what you are saying is that everyone affected called support and posted in a forum about it?

there is no chance that additional people don't care enough to complain, or how about people just returning the game/console for a new one?

saying his stat is bull and pull one out of your own ass is just hypocritical...

by Quixand - 2008-05-01 18:36
» hahaha

you couldn't even say that 25% of gamers go on forums much less say that 25% who owns the game is having problems based on what you read on forums...

and everybody knows that gamers who go on forums are a very very vocal minority group in the industry which makes everything seem 100% bigger than what it really is.

» annoying...

thats so annoying!! ITS NOT A LIMITED NUMBER!

I thought my ps3 was alright but it froze once..and 3 of my mates had theirs freeze from 1-3 times... but we have only played it about 5 hours tops each.

If you think about crashes per time played is not so bad, but we have paid good money for an item and we're are not getting the quality it should come with.

does anybody have the customer services line! Winds me up they say its limited.. cos it happens to everyone i know! so I wanto call up now!

at least sort the multiplayer cos that doesnt work either!

» I Have Not Had Any Freezing Problems Yet

I haven't had any freezing problems whatsoever yet and I have probably played 10 hours of gta IV since launch, a little every day so far. I have a 60gig PS3 I got about 3 weeks after launch. I have even played making the system work hard by having multiple cop cars chasing me along with a couple helicopters in heavy traffic, then jumping out of the car and over the bridge into the water with helicopters shooting at me overhead and a few police boats coming to kill me. All of that within about a minute's time! Amazing game!

» One Freeze

I had the game freeze on me once yesterday, but I let it sit for a min or two (while typing an IM to a friend) and it started up again. I have a 60 gig, bought about a month after launch.

» oh oh...

How about the people that called rockstar's customer service, about their game....instead of calling Sony....

by Shatterdome - 2008-05-02 08:27
» I'm curious...

if this was "supposedly" happening on 360's as well (As a prior QJ article has said) Why is Rockstar only refering to the problems in their statement as being on PS3, and why is SCEA having to make a statement on it ?

Fishy....

» too cold

Mine was alright for 2 hours straight last nite ... then this morning it froze twice in the first 5 mins ...

Better be an update this week.

» i call bull*****.

Something tells me they're lying... "an extremely low volume of contacts to our customer service department", extremely low eh, sounds a little fishy to me. I bet at least 10 and perhaps up to 25% of people are affected by this.

» Dualshock?

I thinks it's the Dual Shock for the PS3 version. I bbought one yesterday and I tried playing GTA IV and it would freeze on the loading screen. However, Once I restarted with the SIXAXIS it played fine...Wierd

» fix for the freeze

if your gta4 is freezing all you need to do is sign out of the playstation network before you start your game and it will stop freezing

by denniel305 - 2008-05-03 10:48
» i no the problem

it was on ign news look

Firstly, this is not for the 60GB PlayStation 3's, some of which freeze up at the beginning of the game. This is for those with a 40GB console whose game often freeze up, particularly during missions. Yesterday I connected my PlayStation Network ID to the Rockstar Social Club, ever since then my console often started with a temporary 2 - 3 second freeze when I load up my game, then luckily the game continues. But when I started with missions today my console constantly froze up at certain points, specifically at the start or end of missions.

I reset my console multiple times, yet the problem still continued. I read that others were having a similar problem, so I knew I wasn't alone. Then I thought about signing out the PlayStation Network, and for hours of playing after that the game has not frozen up once! I then scouted the message boards and found that this particular solution completely work for other people as well. So if you're experiencing the same problem, try this as well... it definitely is a better solution than the one Take-Two offers - deleting your save game!

Apparently it has to do with the game having trouble sending your statistics to the social club server. Hopefully Rockstar Games and Sony will find a solution to this.

» this is not a small issue

This game freeze happened to me as well, and several other people if you check on the forums. There is a temporary fix, however. All you have to do is disable the internet connection, then the game will load up again.

by ONESTEP - 2008-05-03 11:32
» Finally a temporary fix
