SCE president says Sony can 're-evaluate' paying for PS3 exclusives |
Ó
An interview with Kazuo Hirai, Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO, president, and Playstation creator successor, has allowed for the opportunity to extract Sony's thoughts on securing PlayStation 3 exclusives by way of financial compensation.
Hirai responded to an inquiry on the consumer electronic giant's policy on financing exclusives and said, "ThatÂ’s something that we can re-evaluate, but itÂ’s also something that the publishers need to make a business decision on."
He explained that the matter would then unfold into just dialogue with the developers. Ultimately, going through with exclusivity will still be their decision - not Sony's.
Hirai was even able to point out that financial support from other publishers would greatly influence what the developers would want to do with the game. The publishers would have their own reservations of this generation's hardware, and thus their support would be driven accordingly. He added:
Where we come into the picture is to have that dialogue with the third-party publishers, to say: “OK, what can we do together if it’s not exclusive that makes the PS3 version of the game more compelling for the consumers than any other version?” Let’s face it – all the games are coming out on a Blu-ray disk which has 50Gb capacity, so let’s put in some making-of content, or maybe additional levels. Also, it really becomes important for the first-party studios to really come up with some envelope-pushing, genre-defining content.
Though the division's market rivals, Microsoft, has been known for paying for content exclusivity to the Xbox 360, Sony is no stranger to exclusives either. Thanks to the gaming division's support, Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet (which was first an independent game before Sony agreed to it) is shaping up well, and there's much anticipation over Quantic Dream's ambitious Heavy Rain.

Mr. Hirai is definitely the right choice to succeed The Father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi.
he knows what he's doing
These lazy 3rd party developers need to prove they can make a great game on the PS3 first. RfoM2 will have 60 players online, what's the most any third party game brings. Warhawk lets you play 32 with no problems. I know the # of players is not the only point to rate a game on, but it shows an amount of effort 3rd party developers seem unwilling to put forth.
Well, supposedly DiRT supports up to 100 online racers, but for a FPS, RfoM2 with 60 is the most.
Well IMHO, I think it will always be difficult for the PS3 to be developed for. Not because of its complex Cell CPU which is becoming old, but more of the fact that when you sit down and realize that MS pretty much owns both platforms (360, PC) on gaming... if you were a developer, what would you start with? You have to think also, MS is sure to be making plenty of deals in the background. Just so its not misinterpreted, I think the fact the Xbox 360 came out first, the fact its CPU is as common and closely related to todays PC CPUs, I think in general the choice will be to develop for the PC/360 first while PS3 gets the ports. Even if PS3 is possibly the better console (for not having a DVD9 streaming bottleneck) I dont think it has much potential unless it starts dishing out some serious $$$ for some exclusives. PS3 has features like crazy, but MS is tearing up the gaming market and buying everyone out. Idk, its interesting to see how it turns out. Just my opinion.
Yes, they suckered me in with that "100 player" claim, too. Actually, all I was really after was a good LAN hookup between two consoles. But even that is a ruse. Codemasters should really have a nice little lawsuit thrown at them for their dubious claim of "multiplayer" on Dirt. What it is, is that each of you race on the same track LAYOUT, competing 'live' against each other's relative time score ....but you are NOT on the same TRACK. In other words, your time score might be 1:59 and mine might be 1:58, but you would never actually SEE my car on the track in DiRT. (Yes, I know this sounds confusing, weird, and stupid. I didn't make the game that way. DiRT is essentially a 1-player game, no matter which way you cut it.) So, essentially, DiRT is ironically the best example to PROVE Datnizzle's point that 3rd party developers are hopelessly lazy.
