Rumors: PS3 Specs Downgraded?

The "Phantom Insider" is back for another generous helping of juicy info on the PS3. He claims that Sony's next-gen console may ps3 even see more downgraded specs. It looks like Sony won't be getting much love with this new set of bad news that's spreading like wildfire in the gaming circle. But then again, bad publicity is still publicity.

Here's the rundown:
  • Fully functional PS3 betas still do not exist
  • The power source might be an external 400 watt unit, instead of internal as promised
  • The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still can't dissipate the heat to sufficient levels
  • Yields on 3.2 gigahertz CELL processors are too low - final release might run only at 2.8 gigahertz
  • RSX has been finished for quite a few months now - no further details
  • PS3 units at E3 is 2.8Ghz and had 2 GB of RAM
These don't surprise me at all but they aren't exactly what I want to read about when I go looking for PS3 news. If these downgrade "rumors" turn out to be true, how would Sony justify the $600 price tag?

I can't imagine what would happen if these things were true. Damn it Sony, why don't you give us some ground to stand on? Blah, for now I can only see this as true rumors.

I doubt its true, but I won't rule anything out. I won't be happy if I'm paying $600 for a downgraded PS3 when November rolls around.

What the f*k it's mean? Microsoft PR folks don't sleep.

Red says: got any interesting news?

Phantom Insider says: sure

Red says: then let's start it up

Phantom Insider says: Fully functional PS3 betas still do not exist

Red says: hmm

Phantom Insider says: Despite that we have seen a number of downgrades

Red says: clock speed?

Red says: remember it was going to be 3.5 ghz?

Phantom Insider says: And now we have been told that the powersource might be an external 400 watt unit after all

Phantom Insider says: instead of internal as promised

Red says: interesting

Phantom Insider says: The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still cant dissipate the heat to sufficient levels

Phantom Insider says: And yields on 3.2 Gigaherz CELL processors are too low

Red says: they can't produce them in mass supply still?

Phantom Insider says: so the final release might run only at 2.8 gigaherz

Red says: what have you heard about the rsx?

Red says: why would that be downgraded?

Red says: it as already somewhat weak

Phantom Insider says: RSX is finished and has been finished for quite a few months now

Red says: hmm

Phantom Insider says: we know what it can and cannot do

Red says: yea?

Phantom Insider says: I won't comment any further

Red says: hint?

Phantom Insider says: No

Red says: come on, this is anonymous

Phantom Insider says: I can't tell you more

Phantom Insider says: I do not want to lose my job

Red says: does it bode well for the ps3?

Phantom Insider says: Last time we had a lot of internal emails coming in from Sony

Red says: hmm not surprised

Red says: you were the first to blow the lid off things

Phantom Insider says: They were looking for the sources of the delay and dev problems leaks

Red says: lol

Phantom Insider says: i cannot risk it

Phantom Insider says: I am sorry

Red says: no probs

Red says: one thing

Red says: were the units at e3 2.8?

Phantom Insider says: yes

Phantom Insider says: and had 2 gigs of ram

Phantom Insider says: dev kits ya know

I guess the heating is the biggest problem. The external power source is not that much of an issue considering nearly every console has one. Of course the 360's for example is quite huge but there is a lot of room behind my TV (with enough space for ventilation).

The 2.8 ghz thing sounds bad on the paper but in the end I don't think it will make that much difference. Of course with the whole architecture of the PS3 it is quite difficult for me to appraise the impact of such a change - But if it is indeed true that the E3 demos ran on the weaker hardware then we don't really miss out on something. It is like we never saw what the PS3 is capable of with 3.2ghz. In the end it comes down to personal taste but the PS3 graphics do look nice enough.

About how Sony is going to argue the price even thought the specs are downgraded? Again with the blu-ray I guess. They never had any good arguments about the price.

take this with a f*** big grain of salt, last time the rumors were false anyway.

"They never had any good arguments about the price."

And stop talking 'bout the 600$ ps3, it's 500 if you want the exact same thing of the xbox360 premium+blue ray player, it's the same price, with more, so quit your non-sense about the price, if you just wanna play a console, just buy the f*** core, it's better than the premium x360 with more in it for the same price...

you are stupid Emil, Dexyn, and Maricar V.

What do you mean about what's coming , and stop crying out loud? I love the PS3, I have ever since I first heard it was coming about. I am a fanboy, but it's fair that I also see sides different sides on what they have to offer. Ok, in truth, I completely disagree with these rumors, but that's just it, these are Rumors no matter how bad it may seem.

Sony: Most powerful system ever, millions of teraflops, supercomputer + linux, dual 1080p hdmi etc etc

"Journalists" (and I use that term loosely): Drastically underpowered, low yeilds, no 1080p on base model etc etc

Personally, I'm sick of all this bull*****

Seriously, the PS3's price is reasonable for the power it has. But that doesn't change hwo the price is being argued. Personally I am a Nintendo fanboy if you want but that didn't stop me from buying a 360 too. And I am glad that I have. Granted I bought it second hand because I think the 360 is expensive too. I just stated that I am a Nintendo fanboy and I ownt a 360 but I am not biased when it comes to 360 vs PS3.

Remembering a few catch phrases when the 360 was brand new, I heard a lot of things like raw power, HDTV output, the whole Live! experience with friends lists, Arcade games, the ability to use it as a media center... True, the PS3 has all that too. But do you really ever hear about this features? They don't even advertise their new controller all that much. Realizing that except Blu-Ray Sony lags behind in every matter I understand why Blu-Ray seems their only argument about the high price - because with every other thing it would be "the 360 already got that".

Sony could really need some positive publicity or advertising campaign now because it really doesn't look too good for either Sony or the PS3.

This is another Microsoft Fans FUD trick.

Anyway if it was downgraded to 2.8Ghz, this sint a problem - afterall my 2.2ghz AMD 64 Blows my mates 3.0 Ghz Celeron out ot of the water. Nowadays the Number of Mhz means NOTHING!

Neway it may be like the PSP, 3.2Ghz underclocked to 2.8Ghz - with the ability to let the developer decide if they want to up to 3.2ghz - that makes sense to me

i dont believe a thing this article says. True, its just a bunch a bs to keep the sony haters rollin. Since bob Dole was such a dlck, you deserve to feel stupid. You say go with the 500 ps3 and it the same price as the 360 premium. (360 is getting hd, not blue ray) 500 is not = to 400. Your a dumbass. Oh and easy, your an idiot for saying 10 times more powerful. If it was that powerful there would be no contest.

# RumoursGuest 2006-06-11 21:49
The industry would be quite boring if there were no rumours. If you really want to wait for solid facts about PS3 I wish you good luck with hardly any news at all.

There is nothing wrong with posting rumours - if you are not claiming that this is a given fact. QJ never stated that this is a fact and clearly labeled every "Phantom Insider" newspost as a rumour. Noone can tell for sure that every aspect of this rumour is false. There are no bold claims, every brought up point is quite reasonable. A change from 3.2 to 2.8 is nothing extraordinary and by all means plausible. Same goes for the external power supply. It would be different if QJ posted a rumour that the cpus will not clock at 3.2 but only at 2ghz because that would obviously be completely false.

But with posts like this there is no need to get upset at all.

Of course this article aint true, if it was wouldnt you think that this would be posted on a more credible site, such as IGN or something, and also come from a more credible source, rather than some game develloping COWARD (Nerd in a basement).

I'd rather have no news than listen to this fake crap, Sony will keep their promise and stay with the true specs,

Peace

where their a few good games at launch for the 360? sports games with lack of options, a morbid kiddie style action for adults? no, but you still forked out the 400 for premium, why? because of the harddrive, hd cables, and the rest of the extras that youd pay out the ass for as addons.

the ps3? it seems to have a damn good launch going, warhawk, sonic, motorstorm, just to name a few. dont catch your fancy? by febuary youll have games like heavens sword and a plethera more of actual games, not just sport games. the price? who cares, if you like it, want it, youll buy it and if you cant youll find a way. 100 dollars difference between the same offerings of xbox360 prem and ps3 basic, 100dollars for bluray disc that 7-8 major movie companies and porn industry supports, that dell and hp support, how many support hd-dvd? 3-8 and microsoft. Remember xbox360's old specs before they felt the need to get a head start? they had a hd-dvd drive in the console. They took it out for that glitchy headstart, and everyone who buy's thier add one hd-dvd drive will be paying 100-200 dollars, which would, if MS had waited and released a real next gen system be on equal par with ps3.

Yes i know i sound like a raging fan boy right now, releiving stress is a great thing.

to the new at hand, the difference between 2.8 and 3.2 is mute. The intel p4 extreme runs at 3.2ghz, my amd anthlon 64 runs at 2.2ghz, both run 32bit os architecture. Whichone is faster? My amd with a ghz less. why? the design of the core, and what they focus on design wise. If sony can redefine the cell to more of an amd core style while keeping the cell specs, its going to blow everything away. but thats doubtful. in the end, this article is rubbish, the source is iffy at best, who would go to a small news site to leak specs... use someone respectable, not gulible. and if it really is true, then its just one more thing that the ps3 and xbox360 have in common, an external powersupply, the rest is mute.

you are saying the difference between 2 completely different architecures of processors. it is true that amd has less GHZ, but runs the same as an Intel with much more "speed". but those are 2 different architectures. sony isnt goint to spend more millions redesgning the cells archetecture. what they are doing is like you going out and buying a 3.2GHZ intell, then lowing it to 2.8 GHZ. there is no differnce in that and what sony is doing. sony isnt redesigning anything in the cell. they are just lowing the clock speed.

"

Red says: why would that be downgraded?

Red says: it as already somewhat weak

Was a 14 year old interviewing the Phantom insider? In the whole interview, it sounds like Red is completely biased and always seems to ask the right negative question to get all the negative facts. I am not specialist in interview dynamics but it seems Red and Phantom Insider are the same person.

Another thing to point out is that these are not new rumors. Who ever wrote this up is using previous flaky rumors and bunch them up to create an inside look of things. If you're an insider wouldn't you report on something new and different? If your a thinking person, you wouldn't believe a word of it.

i was just placing some wishful thinking. yes i know both intel's p4 extreme 3.2 and amd anthlon64 2.2 run on different architecture. and yes i know sony isnt going to spend millions redesigning their chip. Realistically it would be idiotic. Thanks though, i appreciate a gentle knock to reality from the what ifs that my mind wonders off on from these rumors. And yes i do agreewith you on what their doing is most likely underclocking the processor.

if it was true to this comment:

"2 Gig of Ram? Sounds more like upgrades then downgrades."

if this rumor is true, it means this:

at e3 the dev kits had 2 gigs of ram, the ps3 only has 256mb of ram, so in theory the dev kits at e3 would be running better then the actual ps3 itself. so if this rumor is true, you would see worse performance on your ps3 then the dev kits shown at e3.

ok, Vecha and the rest of you, so basicly what you are saying is;

1) I want to buy a gaming system for about 300.

then

2) spend another 600-700 (after the prices start to drop from the 1K price now) later when I want to watch Blu-Ray movies and content???

I guess you have all kinds of money and massive receiver to fit all these extra items in your home entertainment center

So, paying 500 or 600 now for both is not appealing to you. Ok, to each his/her own then.

As for the article - WHAT WHAT WHAT...

yea, I think TheProfessor is right;

Ask the right negative question Red does. And just reading it through, man what a read. Even if they were doing a translation, it would make more sence. Just reading it does not sound very professional.
