Rumor: PS3 Price drop before GDC - Image 1

Planning to buy a PlayStation 3? Wait until March 22, says website 2old2play. According to some info they managed to get their hands on, Sony will be dropping the price of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 by US$ 99, and will retail for US$ 300.

The actual source of their rumor is a little dubious, but what's there to lose if you wait just a few more days? According to their post, the news comes from one of their community members who was in an EB Games store and just happened to overhear that the PS3 will get a price drop on the said day, "just in advance of the Game Developer's Conference."

Making the claim even more questionable is that this news came not long after Sony's most recent comment against PS3 price cuts. Still, it is only a few days, so what the heck.

» April or May

My feeling is it's most likely to be closer to May, or whenever the next God of War 3 comes out. It's likely to be bundled.

» You may wait until April 1st too!

I don't believe in anything until I see it in the shelves.

LOL

» hope its a stripped down version of PS3

I hope it ends up being a ps3 with the basics to play a game and go online via ethernet port. That would be fair to the people who didnt care about price and bought one and fair to people who really want to play games. But then people would complain about it being crappy and they should get the same quality as the higher priced one. This is why i hate my psp only good for playing SNES games.

» stripped down to what?

what would you cut out of it? The only thing I can think of is the wi-fi, they're not going to save any money cutting down on usb ports or anything. It'll always have bluray because all the games are that format and selling one without a hard drive is a big mistake, that's not going to happen. All the media functionality is just software so that doesn't really add to the cost.

shut the hell up. not everyone can affore to shell out 400 or 500 for a system. i bought mine last year.

» Somepeople just complain too muc

Sony was selling the PS3 at a loss and at the beginning a very big loss. Now that hardware prices have fallen and Sony is just about breaking even on the system sales people are STILL complaining that it's overpriced and that it needs a price cut. WTF people? Like any other company, Sony need to earn profit especially in these rough times.

Besides, even if this rumor turns out to be true, why would Sony publicly announce it? If they did, PS3 sales would come to a screeching halt until the day of the price drop. Sony would rather have you purchase a PS3 on Monday for $399 instead of Tuesday for $349 or $299.

» I call fake on

the fact it said 99$ when we all know if anything it is going to be a full $100 because then u can say its under 300 :O.

But seriously Sony wouldn't announce a price cut and to the person above if its one day difference most stores will refund you the $100 because of "Price Guarantee" where they will match the price within a month of purchase.

» i apologize

spending over 60$ on your cell phone bill and over 700$ on the latest cell phones is cheap but $400 for a ps3 system is to expensive, I still believe my 40gb model i got for 399.99 was a justifiable price kinda regret not gettin the limited backwards compability 80gb model, but dont matter i still have my ps2 i bought my ps3 for ps3 games, media centre, and blu ray anyways

by PimpFriedRice - 2009-03-17 06:43
» I agree

"Most" stores will do this. However "most" consumers don't know about this.

by emcp - 2009-03-17 06:48
» mmm

the ps3 in USA is dirt cheap, or atleast it was for those going from GBP>USD

GBP its still cheap im not in favour for a price drop, get some incredible exclusives and i can see a few more 360 users switching

anyway 2old2play, 22nd ???

» Not gonna happen

But they are right, no big issue with waiting for a few more days if you really think that this is true. But, still, NOT gonna happen.

by NarooN - 2009-03-17 08:31
» Haha, funny rumor.

Honestly, it's not gonna happen. Sony has denied it time after time, and wasn't it the same people at such game retail stores that said Halo Wars was coming to PS3?

Yeah, exactly.

I could easily say it would happen, but only if Sony said "No comment" rather than "For the 50th time, we're not having any price drops."

Might as well save up and get one for $399 or go buy something else.

» hahahahaha

since when is an EB or any game store for that matter a viable source of information?

Did u go to a business school for taht knowledge? Lol give us konsumers more credit

by jgr9 - 2009-03-17 18:40
» ?

Is Gamestop phasing out the EB Games name? Yes, I know they are the same store. My point is that my mall used to have a Gamestop and EB Games and now both of them are Gamestop. Are all EB Games gonna be Gamestops now?

never going to happen because Sony fails at the extremly high price of the PS3 and want to scam all of thier customers because they dont care about them.

Microsoft on the other hand do. thats one of the MANY MANY MANY reasons why Xbox will always beat the PS3. period!

» @ melty,

'never going to happen because Sony fails at the extremly high price of the PS3 and want to scam all of thier customers because they dont care about them'

er, ever heard of xp and vista? MS are the worst of them all in terms of treating their customers like crap! you only need to look at the Operating systems that MS put out, making the consumer pay out for new software because the old programs aren't compatible!

i could go on, but then i'd be called a sony fanboy!! yawn!

by HakatoX - 2009-03-18 08:07
» yeah... right

kinda like knowing you are releasing faulty hardware ... yet they do any way ....

» Welcome to the rumor mill

'....Where you'll find the 150th edition of the PS3 price cut news'.

I'm seriously getting sick of seeing these price cut reports from these analysts. This isn't a dig at you QJ, or anyone, I'm just tired of seeing these guys making these predictions only to fall short. That and the ignorance of why the PS3 isn't getting one.

by whitecloud - 2009-03-18 09:46
» dont think so

sony loves money to much.

i will belive this when i see it, to me it feels like under sourced, overly hopful speculation.

» DAMN barrage of price cut statements

the constant postings of these postings im sure flooding the internet, must affect ps3 sales on some percentile. I mean seriously I wonder how many buyers put off their purchases with these rhumors.

by xche78x - 2009-03-19 00:22
» fact or f@cked?

its been over 2 years after the ps3 launch, if they haven't got a ps3 by now, maybe its just a little out of their league?

people who complain for prices aren't just looking good enough or doesn't have the means to save for it. they maybe able to buy a used ps3 for 199 bucks but will they be able to afford buying games for it? truth is current gen gaming is not just a hobby anymore, its an expensive addiction!

and you also need an HDTV or 720p or higher monitor, that's another thing you have to worry after buying an expensive gaming machine (be it ps3 or 360). if your defense is the old tv, then just stick with your ps2.

and to the guy below hoping for stripped down ps3, No it wont happen yet. Sony maybe stupid and arrogant most of the times but not as dumb as to strip down the ps3. sure they can save money removing unessential parts like wifi, usb ports and card slots but they will never get away if they touch the HDD, bluray and any other part for the matter. and removing the ps2 playing capability only handicapped their console, never return income but make it lose more instead.

anyways if this proves to be true then it will be easier for regular people to toss in the money and purchase a ps3. actually you can already pay less than 299 if you really look hard enough.

by RexNox - 2009-03-19 03:43
» My people are holding off for...

$250. Until then, 360 and Wii are better buys.
