Game Informer - Image 1

Game Informer magazine's August issue is now out, and it's got a bunch of juicy tidbits coming your way. According to the game-oriented magazine, Sony is planning on releasing a 40GB US$ 399 PlayStation 3, but will have no backward-compatibility. Game Informer was even waiting for the announcement at E3, but the news wasn't confirmed in the event.

As for the much-anticipated title in the Final Fantasy series, Game Informer reports that the status of the Final Fantasy XIII's progress is in a state of disarray, and the localization process is estimated to take until the end of next year to be finished.

Those were quite tasty chunks of rumors for the PS3 system. Will they ever turn out the be true and either please and/or disappoint Sony fans? Updates as we get them.

no BC?

Great news about the $399 ps3, but no BC...hmm that will annoy alot of people

Geez..

Game Informer sure seems to have gone downhill. That kind of rumor doesn't even make sense. Having no BC on a single SKU wouldn't save them any money at all. They already switched to software emulation which doesn't costs them anything extra no matter how many units they put it in.

word

agreed that makes no sense at all although i love the screens they put in their magazines lol

No 100% SW Emu

The current PS3 does not have a 100% SW emu. Only the EE has been removed, the GS (the Graphics Synthesizer) is still there and a vital part of the emu. If they remove that, too, it will loose BC - at least for now until they'll have a 100% SW emu. I don't know why anybody would complain, though. There's still an SKU out there with Emu. Most likely people with a huge PS2 collection have a PS2 anyhow. I think, however, that PS3 library needs to grow before that will happen, but maybe for the Holiday season (I think the number of games released in August is higher then what's available right now:). I certainly would buy a second one - just to have a second BlueRay player in the bed room. Nobody beats that price there.

WTF

Another SKU? This makes no sense. After the pre-E3 announcement of the 80GB, why would they mention this? I call BS. The FFXIII is more reasonable...sucks though.

makes no sense

A 40gb $399 PS3 with no backward compatibility? The price is right, but there goes all the best games you can play on the PS3! What a waste! Sony pretty much said they only want a single SKU from now on. It looks like the "ripoff edition" $599 80gb PS3 will be the way to go once the 60 gb PS3s are sold out as part of their bait and switch plan to generate a short term sales spike.

a

after the 60 gig sku runs out sony will probably announce that the 80 gig will drop to 499 and be shipped w/out motorstorm.....DUH
by - 2007-07-17 12:06:38
its not...

its not like changing the size of the Harddisk inside can be called "new SKU". The whole rest is the same, just a bigger harddisk. And well, you can never complain about bigger harddisk space.

Are you serial?

Why would they not put the software emulation already in place in the Euro PS3s and the 80 gig units? It's not going to cost them anymore money. I call bull*****, perhaps no WiFi built in or even HDMI but BC? =/
by - 2007-07-17 14:15:39
...

Its a load of bull, what they might mean is a 40gb PS3 at $399 with no emotion engine and only firmware updates to do BC.

gay

Here is Mister again.

The only thing thats a rip off is MS xbox, not only is the hardware a failure, Its high way robbery on the add ons. I wonder how long its going to take b4 MS get pounded By the unsold Systems lol. Sad day for MS, and since Peter is gone. Oh and this is a great buy you can still play games on the system, including BC You just need to update it. But The only thing i don't get is the only the 80GB will be available and then this. Could be a rumor.

GS?

To JuSho: Do you have any solid information that the GS is still in? I haven't seen anything to indicate that RSX couldn't or isn't handling that work.

Did some checking

At least one article (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20070226073502.html) out there claims they were using the single chip EE+GS solution an that the whole thing ws removed. At the time the manufacturing costs of the unit plus its memory was estimated to be $32 USD.
