Rumor: Two Taiwanese firms building PS3 Slim, Japanese rollout set for early July

Is the PS3 Slim a fabrication or a frustrating leak? If it turns out to be the latter, then here's another possible source of frustration for Sony: Rumor has it that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies have been awarded contracts to build the PS3 Slim.

According to UDN.com (and a handy dandy translation from Joystiq), half of the orders were given to Foxconn. Another Taiwanese group, ASUS subsidiary Pegatron, will be handling the other half. Both companies served as original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for the original PS3. The PS3 Slims are expected to ship in early July in Japan to cope with summer vacation demands.

All of this comes from anonymous sources, so keep in mind that this is just a rumor. Still, it certainly does seem like the PS3 Slim is moving further from rumor and inching closer to reality.

Now out of the three systems, the PS3 is the largest, but do you really need a slim PS3 right now? I mean sure the PS3 is large, but by no means is it the largest item in the entertainment center. Plus the Slim version of any Playstation product usually doesn't come until well into the system's life, the PS3 has only been around for 3 years now. There's no need for this... Sony as of late is making a lot of needless actions (Killing the PSP 2000 really early with the 3000 and then the PSP Go)... In three years there has been six different PS3 configurations (20GB/60GB/80GB ver. 1 with emulated PS2 support/40GB/80GB ver. 2 without emulated PS2 support/160GB)! First it was the 20 and 60GB versions, then they killed the 20GB and replaced it with the 80GB ver. 1. Then they killed off the 60GB and replaced it with the 40GB. They killed 80GB ver.1 and left the 40GB. They brought in 80GB ver. 2 and then killed off the 40GB with the 160GB. Make up your mind Sony! Plus its the only system that has taken features away from its initial system setup (the E.E. and G.S ships effectively crippling PS2 playback). Sony is really screwing us, the gamers and loyal fans in the behind! I'm starting to get real sick of it. Becoming like Apple! A new version of every product every half a year before they even fix the last one! You suck Sony! :( I want old and awesome PSone and PS2 Sony back!

That's to you, Diablith. :) ...Really, have you been following the scorecard over the past 3yrs at all? iSuppli was the company who originally broke apart the original 60gb back in 2006 and estimated the *manufacturing cost* at OVER $900... even though there were selling them at $600. 3yrs later, the price of the PS3 is now $400. That means that in 3yrs time, they've had to reduce the *manufacturing cost* by OVER $500. ...So, if they've come out with a lot of (actually minor) revisions to the hard drive loadout, and taken away some features ...there is GOOD reason. And, that reason isn't to "screw you" or me. It's actually to make a profit and *stay in business*. Imagine if you sold over 20million of something .... and lost *just* $50 on every one. --Do you think you might be pulling some features here-and-there? Think you might try and change the design in some way in order to reduce your cost ...so that you maybe *don't* loose $50 a unit?

You would think it would be cheaper, but I wouldn't count on that.

They will probably make the "fat" PS3's cheaper and launch this at the higher price point. Hoping people will pay more for a thinner better looking PS3. There is no reason psp-go could not be the same price as current PSP's, but because it's new and a "premium" product they bumped up the price. I am sure Sony will think the ps3 slim is a "premium" product as well.

Exactly! It wont be cheaper and who the hell cares about slimer? If it was dramaticly smaller all the way around, used less power and generated much less heat then SURE! But we're not there yet in the computer world. It's too soon.

My PS3 is smaller then the newest DirectTV DVR. Not sure what DVR you have. It's a little taller but again, who cares? I already have 2 feet of dead space above it as it is. Saving an inch or two in height wont help the average person.

I've got the FiOS HD DVR, its slightly wider then the PS3 but the PS3 is much taller and gets extremely hot. In fact, whenever I play games I have to pull it out a bit or the fans start getting louder then a vacuum cleaner (no exaggeration, has anyone actually heard the fans of the PS3 on level 5 cooling)?
