Alleged screenshot of PS2 titles on PlayStation Store - Image 1

An interesting screenshot was recently sighted on the N4G forums depicting what seems to be a full version of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty available for download on the PlayStation Store. Don't fly off the handle just yet - this image was already recognized by Sony as a clever fake and that the company had no plans of releasing any PlayStation 2 titles on the highly popular downloadable service.

The image was originally posted by forum member NiTiZ, who stated that the image was leaked by a friend who works at Sony London. The PS2 downloadable titles will supposedly be announced during the upcoming E3 event. This move will be in response to Microsoft's Xbox Originals which debuted on the Xbox 360 last year.

However, Sony's Patrick Seybold released a statement to GamePro, saying that "there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3". He admitted that he wasn't sure where the image came from, but it's clear that this was one rumor that was squashed pretty fast.

» Upgrade

There would be some many people upgrading their PS3's HDD if this were true.

by na2rul - 2008-07-01 02:40
» unnecessary since the ps2 still sells

» heh

by Lethal_NFS - 2008-07-01 03:41
» ummmmm

Why the hell would you buy PS1 games when CFW is out there?

by Apeaggedon - 2008-07-01 04:00
» i guess

that would be kinda kool, but then that would mean MASSIVE sales drop on ps2 hardware, and thats not good cuz ps2 is still selling well.

plus, that screenshot doesnt even look like the playstation store that much at all.

poorly done.

i allready have over 70 ps2 games so im good to go for now.

» just

go to the bargain bin in gamestop or eb. they have everything in there for a cheap price. i bought turok evolution for 3 bucks.

» .

Wouldn't make much sense since there's no way the 40gb PS3s could play them.

» Hmm

That's nice, but let the record show that Sony ALWAYS denies ANY plans.

Sony was denying the existence of a 40 gig PS3 right up until the day before it was announced. Same with price drops. Rumors flew, Sony denied for a while, even upto and including the very day before an announcement was made containing a plan. Sony saying no doesn't mean anything. At all.

by NarooN - 2008-07-01 07:37
» meh.

Deny doesn't equal+ zomg it's coming later.

And I don't remember them denying any price drops because price drops will always happen with consoles. That's a given. PS2 titles would be too big and annoying to download from the PS Store. To be honest, I won't miss this feature, even though I loves my PS2 games.

Because not everyone has, or knows of, custom firmware.

by Adamantius Snake - 2008-07-01 08:50
» same here

yeah, seriously, and it is legal

I don't think the size is a problem. Most PS2 games aren't 2 GBs big. Hell, even MGS2 is "just" 3 GBs big.

Some PSN downloads are already bigger than this. (GT5 Proloque for example). If you have a slow bandwidth, just start it, and let it download it the background. Even if you have a crappy bandwidth, it shouldn't take longer than a few days.

by Lethal_NFS - 2008-07-01 14:38
» Ummmm

Well no its not legal. But who cares? My folder of 150 PSP games looks mighty fine and my wallet looks nice and thick.

» Support.

You do it to support them. Notice how fewer titles are coming to the PSP? Great system except the developers have less desire to make games for it if they aren't making money. I use CFW also but I like to actually buy the new titles.

» @Lethal_NFS

WTF r u talking about that its not legal? Ur saying downloading games is as legal as buying them? My comment was in support of yours.

» Misleading all of us!

Someone tell me, why is it that I could download special PS2 System files for my PS3 on the PSN a few days ago?

Description: "These files are necessary to play harddisk-based PS2 titles"

So what?!

Tell me your opinion

They are still online!

by keengsnake - 2008-07-10 22:54
» dude

those files are used to make certain games that require the Sony HDD for the Ps2 work with the ps3 and it's HDD . I forgot the name of the few titles that required the PS2 HDD to work . But final fantasy I think is one . In other words don't worry about it if you have the 40 gb ps3 or lack the game(s) that require it.
