Rumor: Sony revealing "hardware redesign" at E3 |

Ó

It seems the PSP Go! isn't the only console redesign that Sony is rumored to be prepping for E3. PlayStation Lifestyle reports that they've caught word of another hardware redesign to be debuted by Sony at the annual gaming expo.
This is just a rumor and there are no specifics, so this could just be a white PS3 to complement the white DualShock 3s that Sony is still denying. Heck, the console in question wasn't even specified, so it could be for the PS2 or even another redesign for the PSP. The PSP Go! is rumored to have two different SKUs, after all.
Still, my head echoes the same thought that occurred to PlayStation Lifestyle: a slim PS3. Every Sony console got slimmed down, so why not the PS3? I'd certainly want one of those. If this leads to a price drop for any of the available PS3 SKUs, then even better. Keep checking back here for more updates. Oh, and just in case you forgot: this is a rumor.

you know, people were asking the same question when big ps1, fat ps2 and fat psp were the newest models around. and yet sony managed to slim them down into psone, ps2 slim, psp slim, respectively. i personally didin't believe they could slim down the psp at all. it was already pretty small, but a bit heavy.
it usually boils down to integrating more chips into one (like GS/EE on more recent ps2 slims), or multiple boards into one, taking out the psu, replacing certain circuits with smaller ones, and reducing the size of the media slot (umd drive is more "flat" in psp slim, compared to psp fat)
they could e.g. put in a flatter BD drive mechanism (compare the sizes of dvd drives in ps2 and ps2 slim - it can be done), strip out internal hdd slot and support only external hdd drives. that would already save plenty of space, but would be a pretty controversial decision, no doubt about that.
also, keep in mind that the technology goes forward. cell chips were manufactured in 90nm process. there is already plenty of space for improvement here.
in this case they probably could reduce ps3 by ~50% in height, since pretty much half of the ps3 box is occupied by hdd slot and psu.
