Rumor: Sony revealing "hardware redesign" at E3 |
Ó

It seems the PSP Go! isn't the only console redesign that Sony is rumored to be prepping for E3. PlayStation Lifestyle reports that they've caught word of another hardware redesign to be debuted by Sony at the annual gaming expo.
This is just a rumor and there are no specifics, so this could just be a white PS3 to complement the white DualShock 3s that Sony is still denying. Heck, the console in question wasn't even specified, so it could be for the PS2 or even another redesign for the PSP. The PSP Go! is rumored to have two different SKUs, after all.
Still, my head echoes the same thought that occurred to PlayStation Lifestyle: a slim PS3. Every Sony console got slimmed down, so why not the PS3? I'd certainly want one of those. If this leads to a price drop for any of the available PS3 SKUs, then even better. Keep checking back here for more updates. Oh, and just in case you forgot: this is a rumor.

im not sure what to say on this one. i dont like ANY of the PS slims i never bought the PSONE i had the original. i still have the original ps2 and is working great, i just cancelled FFXI on it a few months ago, and as for a ps3 slim? i dunno i guess if itd drop the pirce a few hundred bux then maybe id get one for my g/f but NOT for myself me and my launch 60gig are doin just fine. ive never heard of the psp go, ***** i still have the original psp. now when they launch a psp with 2 analog sticks, then ill think about getting a new one
lol how awkward would that be :p.
could mean that they'll add the backwards compatibility chip or that they're gonna shrink a component ...
Still hoping for a ceramic white slim version of the ps3 though ...
i thought it was silver ps3. my fren ordy got wht ps3
I seriously doubt the PS3 Slimline. What else could they shrink, take out, remove, whatever? I'm pretty sure taking out another USB wouldn't save much money...
maybe they replace the piano laquer with some plastic BS. Who knows.
The PSP is actually much better Slim.
Though I agree the Slim PS1 and PS2 with no HDD bay sucked compared to the Phats.
"What else could they shrink, take out, remove, whatever?"
you know, people were asking the same question when big ps1, fat ps2 and fat psp were the newest models around. and yet sony managed to slim them down into psone, ps2 slim, psp slim, respectively. i personally didin't believe they could slim down the psp at all. it was already pretty small, but a bit heavy.
it usually boils down to integrating more chips into one (like GS/EE on more recent ps2 slims), or multiple boards into one, taking out the psu, replacing certain circuits with smaller ones, and reducing the size of the media slot (umd drive is more "flat" in psp slim, compared to psp fat)
they could e.g. put in a flatter BD drive mechanism (compare the sizes of dvd drives in ps2 and ps2 slim - it can be done), strip out internal hdd slot and support only external hdd drives. that would already save plenty of space, but would be a pretty controversial decision, no doubt about that.
also, keep in mind that the technology goes forward. cell chips were manufactured in 90nm process. there is already plenty of space for improvement here.
in this case they probably could reduce ps3 by ~50% in height, since pretty much half of the ps3 box is occupied by hdd slot and psu.
And there are even more. The top of the PS3 is mostly heatsinks and plastic. Most of that could be better optimized and flattened down so the consoles surface would actually be flat instead of rounded. Put the power supply in a brick just like the wii and 360, and you are looking at an even smaller console. It definitely can be done.
every console I brought from them was Fat or Phat.
wont fool me the 4th time
PS1, PS2, PSP and holding off PS3
My ps3 is backwards compatible. it would b cool 2 c a new ps3 at the same time I would feel a lil cheated I've only had my ps3 4 5 months. I got drunk & lost my psp2001 I still have my psp 100o but its a fat BI@TCH (lol I luv Her) I miss my 2001 SLIM IS BETTER PS3 LOSE WEIGHT lol. ...but not capabilities
