Rumor: Sony planning on basing the PS4 on the PS3's Cell Processor

PlayStation logo - Image 1We've heard Crytek discuss and predict the arrival of the PS4 sometime in 2011 or 2012. Now, Japanese website PC Watch is saying that Sony is indeed working on the next money-making machine for the PlayStation family, and that it's gonna adopt cost-saving measures.

How exactly? Why, by recycling the Cell processor that's currently being used in the PS3, that's how. Well, of course they didn't exactly say "recycled". But basically, that's the idea. Says the Japanese site, big ol' Sony "has begun seriously considering" basing the PS4 on the exact same CP of PS3.

They also claim that Sony is now testing the waters by asking for developers' reactions on the idea. Well, it's not exactly surprising that they'd want to milk the CP as much as they can. after all, it's only been in use for the PS3 for about a year, and it's way too early for them to be making new technology when this one hasn't even reached its potential yet.

We'll see. We'll be keeping you updated for more on this matter.

» Well

Sony better let me use my PS3 HDD on the PS4, cuz I have a lot purchased games that I would want to be carried over. There's always the option to redownload based but some content on the PSN do disappear after a while.

by Eclipze_ - 2008-09-29 18:14
» yeah

I would think they'd carry over the download list through PSN and/or have the option to use the ps3 hard drive. Both of those sound possible.

this will be littered with negativity about Cell dev probloms....I'll wait

» pfft ps4

thats like 6 years off

» yup

I was thinking that Sony was actually gonna do this since Devs are having a hard time with the PS3..this way the release of the PS4 is actually gonna come faster than anyone will expect and finally the PS will be recognized(I hope the early production and release doesn't make it like the XBox3fixme and breaks all the time)

Games will probably cost 70 USD by then

» It would be a smart move...

Since the cell is such a unique processor, why would you want to ditch it right when devs have mastered it.

They already have 6ghz CP so why not a 12ghz one without the 8th spe disabled and maybe an extra general purpose cpu.....devs would already know how to use it, they could just throw more at it, and as long as they went with nvidia for the GPU again, pretty much all PS3 games would be BC by default...

Next gen will be much better for both MS and Sony, as they both should use similar architecture as they did this gen but more beefed up....at least I hope they do, they gotta give devs time to master these systems so we can se some real crazy shyt....instead of switching hardware every gen and sending them back to the begining...

» What?

They're already working on PS4?!

We just got things rolling for PS3...

» Good idea!

They should put 4 or more cell processors in the PS4 with more ram and a smokin video card! Also it would be cool by that time maybe to have at least a TB hard drive using a non mechanical hard drive like with flash memory or something. I wonder if they will use blu-ray, maybe the famed 16 layer disc that was announced a while back. Maybe the disc drive could have 2 lasers working together to have seamless loading. I'm excited at the thought of all the possibilities!

All your ideas are getting me exctied lol!

Still, I read on here a long time ago that the next-gen of machines will probably be IP based. Think it had something to do with an Australian company! Anyway, we'll buy the rights to use a game/software that's stored remotely, then we'll just log into it to play/use it. Not sure what'll happen if our connection is lost for a while... no gaming I suppose!

Usually do that. The wii was conceived on Day 1 for nintendo. It takes a long time to come up with these things you know, so this will probably take a while to become full blown reality.

by xche78x - 2008-09-30 01:39
» with geforce 280gtx 1gb ddr4 dedicated and 4gb ddr3 main ram

but when the ps4 arrives, the video card and memory ive mentioned above may not be that powerful anymore as it is today lol!

ill wait for your counter comments after 6 years or so. hehehe

» i thought this might happen

I posted a ps4 forum post in gamespot.com and this was one of the possibilities i thought of, because the cell BE is fully scalable, meaning you can have as many as you like of them working together to perform much more advanced calculations, hence why the most powerful supercomputers are using loads of cell processors.

They can do raytracing (rendering used in CGI movies etc. something that takes ages on a normal computer) in real-time if you have about 3 or 4 of them working together. (search youtube ibm ps3 raytracing demo) If the cell becomes cheap and small enough by then, it is certainly possible to have 4, maybe 6 of them on one substrate, giving us truely movie quality graphics. Graphics cards as we know them may be obsolete by the time this happens, since raytracing cannot be done with them, it needs CPU power.

by ultimax - 2008-09-30 04:39
» ...

With GPUs at the moment, it's about "how realistic can I make an image appear 60 times a second", whereas when raytracing, the mentality is more like "how realistic can I make this. Period."

Ray tracing won't be practicle for 3D games for a long while yet.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

That's not a possibility. Last time I researched it, less then 20% of Americans have broadband faster then 1Mbps. Even less for Canada.

So while that would be great for Japan and the UK, the rest of the world would suffer.

nah, they are using the next-gen format:

the will probably use another cell P (or 2) as the gpu.

Look at this:

"CP as much as they can. after "

DO YOU SEE THE WORD THAT DOESN'T HAVE A FIRST CAPITAL LETTER!? Unbelievable!

» PS4 no go

why make one? Until there is 3d HDTV or some crazy ***** like that comes out, it will not happen

Hi Hideo Kojima.

I hear Panasonic just created a 4 layer double layer blu ray disc. That's 8x25, which eqauls 200 gigs!

Now, aside from that, I wonder how many people have 1080p tv's, mine is 1080i. Point being, Playstation 3 is going to stick around with 1080p TVs. I can't wait to buy a new tv, and see some BIG NEXT GEN GAMES.

PS Kinda excited about the next Xbox, even though they screwed all of us with the 360.

by platon - 2008-10-01 02:13
» 1st thing to note: rumor

And anyway, even if they would use it, its super fast, after they put it at 45nm, they'll be able to, let's say, put 3 of those in the ps4, or make them way faster. It's like saying intel "recycled" those core duo in some core 2 duo... IT'S NOT THE SAME! lol.

And sony HAVE to start thinking now, or else M$ will release another lame console ahead of everyone.

by Shatterdome - 2008-10-01 07:37
» Well....

They will have to make 3D TV's because the human eye cannot tell any difference in clarity over 2000 pixels in width, so 1080P is as high as TV's will go.....

Thing is with the Next-gen of systems is they will finally be able to do all their games at native 1080P and not have to sacrifice details or framerates for it...
