Rumor: PSN to get PS2 games, backwards compatibility FW update in the works?

PS3 - Image 1Oooh, this one's a keeper: hushed words are floating on the web, saying that Sony was almost about to incorporate some PS2 backwards compatibility function with one of the more recent PS3 firmware updates. Due to some last minute directives though, they decided to pull the plug on it.

This latest rumor comes from a French video game publisher who supposedly let French website JV247 in on the secret. According to them, PS2 backwards compatibility could still eventually come as an update, and if it so happens, it's going to be because Sony would start offering PS2 games on the PlayStation Store.

I know quite a lot of you are still bitter about having PS2 backwards compatibility taken out of the PS3s units. Yeah, count me in - I can't let go of the PS2 just yet either.

Now if Sony is really intending to bring it back in some form or other, that's going to be great news for all parties concerned. So far, Sony has yet to respond to these claims.

Don't they already have a program up on PSN that allows you to play PS2 games on the PS3? If you go to Add On on the PSN and then to Add On games with BD rather than download games add on. You should find something that looks like a PS2 system. I could be wrong because I never tried to download the file.

I'll check this out

I never understood why some of the ps3 models had the ps2 compatibility and others didn't anyway. I mean it's obvious that sony doesn't want to kill the ps2. They're still producing consoles and games, plus the damn thing is still more than 0. BTW, I'm pretty sure the ps2 system file the guy above me is talking about is only for ps3's that already support ps2 games.

Thats actually a file you download if your system is already backwards combatible that allows you to use the harddrive on games like Socom3, CA, and final fantasy. These games used the harddrive on PS2 and that patch actually allows the PS3 HDD to work as well.

No it allows you to use the PS3 hard drive with the tiny amount of PS2 games that supported using a hard drive, like Final Fantasy 11.

to be honest i don't think that well see any ps2 emulator for the ps3 (or backwards compatibility ) just yet this is just a guess but i wold imagine Sony will only bring it out when they finally drop the ps2 from production

@ DigiTalDEAD why stop with Maguire's thoughts on the matter. Lemme add to that.

Here are four of Sony's bigwigs talking about the removal of backwards compatibililty (articles taken from last year):

OK, if they have a FW update sometime with the ps2 emu. What about those PS3's with PS2 compatability

It'd be cheaper to just add it in a FW update. Plus it won't be hard at all to add PS2 games to the store. Developers or another team could easily tone down the size of the file, but meh.

I think the FW update and the emu is free. So it won't affect anyone got older PS3 that can read PS2 disc. The only difference is probably you can still read PS2 disc. If you want the PSN version of the same game you already got you still have to pay and download it.

haha yeh they need backward compatibility cuz PS3 has no games for it besides MGS4. HAH i dunno who would pay double the price of a good console for 1 PS3 exclusive.

Sure PS3 has blu ray but id rather watch my movies at the cinima, i almost rarely buy DVD's and i would definatly not but some overpriced console!!!

what they should also do is finally allow your PS3 to play PS1 and PS2 imports as well. I didnt pay $500 bucks for a system just to cut my collection in half. And its just annoying that they refuse to put 2 lines of code. Whats even more annoying is that if your wanna play your own import disc, you have to you have to wait to rebuy them in the JPN PSN. Its not right !! Why would i have to buy the same game again if i legal bought my imports in the first place ?! >:(

who doesn't have a ps2? It was the best system last gen and if your gonna go out buy a PS3 it probably means that you follow Sony. I have the 80GB MGS bundle PS3 with B/c and I see myself using my PS2 hooked to my 52" Sony XBR via component rather than the PS3.

I have a B/C 60GB console, and take it from me... PS2 games do look very terrible on it no matter what settings you have enabled/disabled or what resolution you have the PS3 set to.

i actually have their 80 gig motorstorm bundle, that was an experiment for full on emulation to read and play ps2 games, and honestly they look better than they ever did on my ps2.some ps1 games are a different story however, but the ps2 is fine except for the fact that not all discs are emulated right.very few will actually act up or not play.like my time crisis 3 is glitchy and so is my crash twinsanity(wont play at all) but the others work fine.ive been waiting awhile however for them to update the emulation to fix time crisis 3 and twinsanity for awhile now.and while they are at it,whatever other ps2 game isnt caught up in the emulation, whitc h again is very few since i dont have problems with most.

You must not have a PS3 and is just here to bash it. As for those of us that have it...there are so many games on the PS3 that I want to play that I don't have time to play them all. Why don't you go back to playing your 360 and let the bashing go!

Assuming the story is true, and they were just about to release a PS2 firmware update and axed it, I bet you they're holding off until after Christmas. This way they can sell a couple additional PS2s before the thing goes dead. Then they can release the emulator just in time for Killzone and GoW to come out and PS3 will be the hot ***** to buy next year. Or whatever.

You'd have to be silly if you didn't understand why they took out backwards compatability...

Firstly, reduce the costs of the PS3....

Secondly, they make lot's of money off PS2 hardware, and lose money on PS3 hardware....so if they can force people to buy PS2's to play PS2 games....better for them...

I still don't know why people *****...I know it'd be nice if you could play all your games on one console....but the people that whine over the loss of BC are people that already have PS2's.....so PS2 via s-video, PS3 via component/HDMI.....all you have to do is hit the "display" or equivalent option on your TV remote to switch 'em over....big deal...

# Sorry...Shatterdome 2008-12-05 21:08
Gotta agree with Dark...

I was a hardcore 360 owner, and now got a PS3 and I play my PS3 more than 360......

PS3 is just starting to launch it's big guns, and they are creating quite the blast....

Also, even if MGS4 was the only good game on PS3...IF.....it would still warrant a purchase, because it destroys anything on 360...

As far as overprices....Hmmm, don't think so....buy a 60gig premium 360 and add a wi-fi adapter and you've already gone over the price of a PS3 (that has wi-fi built in)....not to mention BRD, Web-browser, Linux, better media playback......I love copying my movies from my PC network onto the PS3 then taking it somewhere to watch 'em....can't do that on 360....
