Rumor: PS3 to lower by price by US$ 100 by October?

One Hundred - Image 1Rumor time folks. The NetMunch News Network blog is reporting that sources, anonymous sources, are stating that a price cut for the PlayStation 3 is likely by October, and the injury to the wallet should lessen by US$ 100. This of course is in light of the recent lowering of the PlayStation Portable price.

NetMunch notes that this could allow for the PS3 to compete directly with the Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite's price point. While the folks posting stuff on DCEmu are a bit more welcoming of this rumor, the people over at PS3fanboy are a lot more skeptical.

Considering the reports that Sony is loosing money for each console sold, US$ 50 would perhaps be a bit more reasonable, but by a whole hundred? Will the shift in production methods of the CELL really lower the price by that much? Well, what do you guys think?

well

A price drop for the PS3 will mean less banter from microsoft fanboys about how much more expensive the PS3 is. I guarantee people will start buying it like crazy.
by - 2007-04-07 18:23:00
I think

this is fake. they won't even lower the ps2 that much but 50 bucks more. I say might be same price as 360 but lil bit more like blue-ray bulti-in
by - 2007-04-07 18:24:43
blu ray

it isnt hard to believe at all since blu-ray is winning the format war. sony is going to bank off blu-ray and games to make up for its loss.
by - 2007-04-07 18:26:33
.

People who don't know its Blu-Ray have no credability.
by - 2007-04-07 19:08:24
..

ofcours ppl would buy it if the price droped, i know i would. I mean come on!, im in sweden and the price for a PS3 here is 6199kr... thats 892.26$ baby

competition

we all know if the PS3 was the same price as 360 then it would be a much closer battle and they would be selling out right now. If Blu-ray gains more momentum like it is expected to and they get the hardware under control it is possible.

Think about it:

Forget what all these analysts say about the manufacturing costs of the PS3's. Seriously, think about it, if Sony was really "losing" making the PS3, they would have never even began production of the PS3s. Sony probably makes them for a fraction of the RETAIL price. They wouldn't waste their time with making a Gaming Console if the manufacturing costs are MORE than the money the consoles sell for. If they were really losing money, they would probably either forget the playstation and move on to something else or they would raise the PS3's price.

wrong

you are totally wrong, sometimes, a company has to sell somthing even if it looses some money over time but they will eventually get profit out of it...video game is a harsh commercial world where you need to "fight" to survive with that said, i think a 100$ drop wouldnt be totally absurd, i mean if sony wants to really get a good grip in the hd-dvd& Blu-ray battle, they need a really cheap player, that would be the ps3. and if they succed in selling more ps3, not only will they make more competition for the xbox360 but they will also do competition for the HD-DVD
by TeamOverload - 2007-04-07 20:44:06
Umm

All companies initially sell their hardware at a loss and make up for it with the sale of software.
by comedy - 2007-04-07 22:39:07
i don't really think it will happen unless...

the way it goes is this: sony sell the ps3 for a loss but then they make money on the software, initially they needed 6 games to be sold per psp when it launched in order to make any profit... it appears it may be similar this time around, although maybe fewer titles as they are selling for exorbitant prices. sony aren't big on price cuts, but if the ps3 doesn't sell very many units (it's doing ok-ish right now) then they may have to think about price drops... but it's unlikely, they'll probs do something else like marketing or bundle-deal things... i wouldn't place too much stock in rumours of price drops... not until a year from now at least. everyone makes money on software etc, so bluray winning will make them big big bucks - the amount they've paid into bluray means they must have a large stake in it, so when it starts paying off they'll probs get seriously lots of cash. price drop isn't going to happen... no way.

HD-DVD Independant hardware is outselling Blu Ray independant hardware

If you want to see who is winning the REAL format war go and ask any store or website and look at the HD_DVD hardware sales vs the Blu Ray hardware sales, the Blu Ray is far behind on the independent player sales, in fact even look at any bias website even they will tell you the same thing. And the Format war was Won by a disk called the DVD9 Dual layer,it has seen off the pitiful sales of hd-dvd and bluray hardware and is still the choice in 99.9% of the worlds households...

360 will just counter drop

And of course lets not forget the money MS is making from Huge software sales and are in a good position to drop the price of the 360 anytime they feel the need, expect them to be One step ahead AS USUAL.
by - 2007-04-08 06:13:01
hmmmmmm

they should raise the price by 200$ then the system would sell!!!!!!! negetive

Time for a business lesson!

On average, it takes 2+ years for a new company to make a profit. Because of a high cost of production and a widespread non-sympathetic attitude toward their price, Sony loses some $200+ for every one sold. PS3 will not make a profit until 2011(AS PREDICTED BY SONY IN NOVEMBER). We all know how fast technology moves; like it says in the aritcle, that high cost of prod. we were talking about is going down. It'll be up to Sony whether they want to give cutomers a break to sell more consoles, or be *****s and keep it at the same price.

marketing scheme

sounds really intutive, i mean look at it, first they releas ethe ps3 a high-end system, prolly one of the best in hardware with a very high price tag, 9USD 9USD. alot of ppl criticize for its price but the 20gb model is almost as much as the 360. now a year after, after a decent marketshare, games, community, and online enhancements(home) they drop the price. thats a very smart marketing scheme. not only are they attractin a whole bunch of people, but now everyone will want the 60gb, especially around holiday season this is big. people who were skeptical about the price will now go to ps3, and everyone else lookin for a new entertainment system (fairly priced) will now have one.
by - 2007-04-08 10:09:27
yo

if they lowered the price a lot of ppl would buy it like me but they would probably not for awhile unfortunately
by - 2007-04-08 10:52:55
Well im probably wrong but...

I think they are gonna lower the price to compete with the new xbox 360 elite that come out april 29. Which has dobled the HD space of the 0 PS3 at 120 HD. And it now comes with HDMI support (that means 1080p for those who have hdtvs). And it comes in black for 9. Which i still think is too much it will do way better if it were about 0 for the new 360 elite
by - 2007-04-08 11:00:41
double edged sword

I think a lot of people will make the comment that the only reason for the price drop is that Sony is scared about the competition. On the one hand, that's a bit harsh, but really thinking about it, I don't see how this could be otherwise. Considering dropping the price means less profit (or more non-profit), if a system was really selling competatively with its peers, there would be no reason to drop the price. Being in third isn't exactly something you strive for, and that's exactly where Sony is, and as evidenced by the Wii, it has nothing to do with launching later. But at the same time, my big beef with the PS3 was the decision to price it on par with a bloody computer. If they can drop the price to a more reasonable range, more power to them.

RE:wrong

If ms was one step ahead they wouldn't have made the xbox 360 so late after sony, saw hdmi as needed like sony has SO ms is playing catch up on features

won't happen for a while

This won't happen this year, or even next year. They are selling fine and people are very happy with the PS3... Only whiny little bitc h xbox fans complain about it this much... Fu cking ass holes.... It's never gonna end. Simple fact, the PS3 competes very well against any version of the xbox because of the built in bluray player. You can't say it doesn't because you xbox idiots got the "choice" to buy the wrong format hi def player... It's not about choice... The PS2 was purchased by millions because it was a cheap dvd player... The PS3 is being purchased BY MILLIONS because it is a great low cost hi def player. People who want hi def know that it costs money. But people make more money now, and can afford it. If 24 million households have HD sets right now, that is a huge starting market for these hi definition players. By 2009 all broadcasts have to be digital, and most people buying a television will buy an HD set... There is plenty of market. I think they should raise the price another $100... Just to make it obvious that there is a huge difference in what you are buying when you make the choice to purchase a PS3 vs sacrifices in an xbox 360...
by - 2007-04-08 14:51:04
^^^ What are you talking about?

HDMI is not needed, it's an option, a welcome option yes, but not necessary for HD. For example, no-one playing Gears of War and seeing the incredible graphics says "Oh, if only my 360 had HDMI". Anyway, I do feel that MS are a step ahead of Sony in terms of price. The 360 costs much less to manufacture now than it did at launch 17 months ago, and yet the price is still the same. Therefore MS are in a good position to drop the 360 price at the appropriate time.

Isn't it about time you grew up?

No really, you're such an immature poster that you can't be more than 15 or 16 years old. BTW, there's a big difference between fans and fanboys. Try to keep that fact in mind next time.
by - 2007-04-08 15:59:14
awsome!

DUDE!!!! They should totaly lower it to like $150+ for 20gb models and $250 for 60gb models =) then the Ps3 will sell like crazy! :)
by - 2007-04-08 18:10:29
in short

if demand was up there would no mention of a lower price. So what this means is that nobody wants this blu ray player that does a piss poor job at playing games
by - 2007-04-08 19:42:29
100%u20AC?

100%u20AC less is still too expensive. 200%u20AC less is OK. For 100%u20AC less, the Europeans would pay the same as ppl from the US. 200%u20AC less and we pay like the americans 100$ less.

HD-DVD is NOT winning.

To uio: The ratio of Blu-Ray to HD-DVD sales are 3:1 in favor of Blu-Ray; so no uio, HD-DVD is NOT winning the format war whatsover. Funny, how if the PS3 is excluded HD-DVD is 'winning'. You can't exclude 2.5 million PS3s simply because you want to prove your point. And besides the discs sales figures do not coincide with your 'proof' of HD-DVD winning.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-09 09:40:51
He's 13, it's going to be a while

Raise the PS3 price by $100? Might as well, because most PS3 owners don't seem too concerned about blowing money. Instead they act like us xbots can't afford one, not realizing we have no use for it! I can't imagine ever using a PS3 if I had one because the games suck and I refuse to support blu ray. Seriously, if they did lower the price I don't think it would make much difference because a: MS can easily lower the 360's price and still turn a profit and b: PS3 still needs some worthwhile games, maybe Lair if it lives up to the hype. I agree he's an immature poster, but at least I can make fun of him!

unlikely

I'm doubtful of a pricedrop... Most consoles sell at a loss making up on software sales, but with the current loss per machine and the current considerable gap in the gaming calendar before any higher tier releases hit the system its unlikely that sony would make up the difference right away... I think theyre more likely to wait until titles such as FF13, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavenly Sword and Assassins Creed and features such as PS-Home kick in before they even consider a price drop (these titles will draw more people to the machine, as well as reimburse current losses to some degree), but if hey lessen the price now whilst theres so little available for the machine worth buying (motorstorm and resistance: fall of man... do I count any others?) they're only going to make a greater loss...

Compare Prices

When you add up the price of an Xbox 360 with the HD player your up to the cost of a PS 3 with the 60G, so really you are getting the better deal because of the bigger Hardrive, and I know of some people who bought 360's that kept freazing up on them, having to send the console back to MS for repairs, and you can't it was the first lot of 360's on the market, I bought a 360 for my son for last xmas at Wal-Mart and after an hour of playing "Need for Speed Most wanted" it froze up on him, and it now seems like now he can't be bothered playing his 360, because he is afraid of getting far into a game and it freazing up on him. He is playing his PS 2 more then the 360.
